I've got to say, RPG Codex asked all the right questions (http://www.rpgcodex.com/content.php?id=128) in their latest interview with The Witcher's PR representative, whose game makes the ballsy self-claim of being "RPG Redefined." It covers just about all the peripheral grounds without spoiling any surprises.

8. Why did you decide to make The Witcher an action RPG? Do you believe that more traditional RPGs are harder to sell? Any concerns that the action fans might be turned off by the non-action elements, and the RPG fans would hate timing attacks and stringing combos?

The Witcher is a modern version of the classic story and role-based RPG experience recreated with stunning real-time tactically deep combat. In comparison to other games on the market we fall between the heavy hack and slash Action RPGs and the old school Traditional turn-based RPGs. We think people will enjoy the balance we are achieving. It’s harder to sell a new IP with an Action RPG slant these days, as a lot of games are headed that way and so the competition is tough. There’s not a lot of traditional RPGs, meaning focusing on a story and truly experiencing a role, so our first goal is to cover that. Then we add our combat system and we feel we have a product that is quite unique in the market. We think both the purists of action and traditional RPGs will be satisfied. So overall our genre is role-playing rather than Action RPG."
I'm always rooting for good story-centric titles. Could The Witcher indeed be what they say it is, as in RPG-Redefined?

I haven't heard about this game in a long, long time... <.<

Good questions in that interview, though some were repetitive. Also, really good answers.

This is now a title that I'll be interested in playing, though I'll wait for reviews.

Yeah, I am declaring myself intersted in the Witcher.

I can see nothing new or different in this title.

Wow, I thought this one had already been released and fallen off the radar. Apparently it still has yet to make it onto the radar.

I don't want RPG redefined. I prefer the original p&p and CRPG definitions.

If you want to make a variant, call it something else, don't try to redefine the genre.

Signed, even though this is a polish production.

rpgcodex appears to be down, so I cant read the interview. Personally I'm a firm believer in not trusting anything these companies have to say until after I hear some player opinions. I won't even trust reviews/previews for obvious reasons.

This whole rpg redefined things sounds an awful lot like a buzz word that ends up being meaningless. I think Dues Ex already took the crown for FPS RPG, and Beyond Good and Evil did it for me when it comes to action RPG. If they can provide an experience to beat that then you can start this redefined stuff.

The site is up, I can access it fine.

The interview is pretty sensible, you'll know once you read it. I found the whole "RPG Redefined" to be iffy too, and this interview sorta clears it up somewhat.

Can we say titty twist on the front page in a headline? :D I guess so!

the only labels i don't go near are "adventure", "sports", "puzzle", "flight sim", and "racing". everything else I don't care what they label as I will have a look at to at least see if i like, and this title i will at least look at to see if i like, since it didn't contain any of the above personal auto-disqualifiers.

:) when i think of adventure games i think of the likes of (old games) sam & max, space quest, king's quest, etc., which i really liked back in the day, but for whatever reason none of the stuff of today grabs me the same way as those did, perhaps i'm getting more impatient in my old age.

Oh come on, this game is witcher than any other, (though, admittedly, not quite as witchy as I would have expected.)

I just saw a release date... Sping '07. Isn't this a bit soon to start hyping? Unless they plan to move the release date up? I am also trying to find more information on the setting, as it seems to be based on a book.

Very vaguely interesting. I thought it was funny that their super special character development was having the character be able to specialize in magic or swords. Sssshhhh, guys, another company will hear you and steal your idea! Psssst, by the way, if you think that's cool, I have something else I can let you in on. ...Sliced bread. Tell no one.

Ran a small box out style preview for this game some time back and I remember what interested me more than anything else was the setting. The Witcher is based on a series of books in Poland that appear to have quite a strong and complex backstory... that part is what is going to stand out for me... well that's my prediction anyway. Not excited about this title but still very curious.

Err...

I think the game sounds good, but I'll admit, that title is driving me away. Every time I look at it, I just... physically shivvy to the side, and gkance the other way.

If it's good, we'll figure out something else to call it.

Ahh, one of my favorite PA comics. I thought this game was done and gone already too.

I've read similar interviews about the game dating back at least a year ago.

And yes, it is based on a series of novels by a Polish author. I haven't read the books, but the little info I do understand about the books seem to indicate the story could be potentially very interesting.

Also, dating back to earlier interviews/answered questions about the combat, it does sound as though it could be alot of fun.

People can make all the smart-ass comments they want about the outrageous claims of "RPG-redefined" but they are at least trying something different. I'd like to think technology's evolved past the point where a strict stat-crunching system is the only method of combat.

But maybe that's because I didn't spend my high school years rolling dice and getting my ass kicked.
