Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/) has posted their review of FFXI. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=63971)

Like Sweden, FFXI's society and scenery is built from hundreds of tiny building blocks. It has races and racism, transport systems and ticket offices, vocations and money, smoking cities and gleaming landscapes, savage monsters and dark dangers, sparkling oceans and swimming skies and hope and death and fishermen and swords and mayors and farming and furry thongs and enough of the paraphernalia of life to persuade you to emigrate from atomic reality to pixel virtuality.
Apparently it's a lot like Sweden... Who knew?

Let me save you all some time:

FFXI's economy is horribly inflated. Competition for spawns is rampant. Travel times are sickening.

If you can get past that, it might be a decent game.

Damn, the grammar police got to him first but left some behind:

lol c'mon...when it's right there staring you in the face you have to point it out! :p

Isn't that part of the initiation here at EA anyway? Your first few news posts are ripped to shreds, GrinR questions your political leanings, Kef grabs your goodies and we all have a good laugh. Or maybe that was just me. Damn repressed memory therapy!

Well back in the day we used to haze the new posters. They had to drink two 30 racks of key stone lite in about an hour. But with these new regulations we can't have fun anymore.

Now Gunny, show on the doll where the bad man touched you.

Seiously though, interesting article with some very salient points about MMORPGs in general and XI in particular.

Sorry about the spelling, had to keep it short and sweet on the off chance the camp commandant was monitoring der internets! I have just narrowly escaped being roughly sodomised with a sprintery broom stick just sending out this, my very first EA "News" post.

Mine didn't get ripped to shreds. I don't think anybody read them, though, heh.

I still find it odd that people play FFXI when there's City of Heroes/Villains, World of Warcraft, EVE, and Guildwars. Different mindset than me I suppose.

Being a Norwegian and having traveled to the wastes that are Sweden many times I can confirm that everything in that quote is 100% correct. Good to see accurate reporting in todays modern gaming-media.

LOL! Does Sweden also come with a 30 day trial and then a monthly subscription? Its shocking how much personal information "games" these days want from you before even letting set foot in their virtual worlds. After completing the registration i felt more like i was ready for a car loan than an escape.

Myself, for example, have been playing FFXI for over 3 years now. That's a LOT of time invested. The article brings up the point where MMORPGs become kinda a second social life. I have many friends in FFXI that I would really miss if I quit the game. And honestly, the game is still fun. There's still TONS of stuff I havn't done/seen yet. I know the graphics are getting a bit dated, but you take the good with the bad. One day we'll look back at WoW and laugh at how simplistic and outdated it looks.

The economy is getting better. I hardly see the gill sellers at the usual places anymore. Spawn competition has been cut down significantly over the past few months with the change of items to rare/ex. Travel times are not so bad if you use the tele-service from your home country or have a whm.

New expansion dropped this week, I have not picked it up yet but I am looking forward to it.

It's official. I am now starting all of my descriptive sentences with the words, "Like Sweden."

"Like Sweden, this ham sandwich is warm and delicious!"

I played it when it was first released. Boring as hell. I kept going thinking that I could only have to fight so many of the same crabs, boy was I wrong. I quit about the time I learned that to become a Samurai class, you had to kill a boss that there's a line of people camping and waiting to take out. I don't really enjoy paying monthly fees to sit there and wait.

I messed around with the expansion pretty much all of yesterday. Its content is aimed more towards the high levels (saw a ton of 75er totally wipe).

Anyway, they added a fair amount of new content (3 new jobs, all of which seem really neat), some of it which seems to be more for the semi-casual FFXI player, like Assault. They're like instanced battles that only require 3 people, and instead of having level caps that piss people off, they're minimum level requirements, and the difficulties are scaled according to your party.

The only main problem with the expansion is to get to the cool stuff, it's a LOT of initial work. Just to get to the new continent, you have to get some rare drop crap, and they built in wait time to access things. To be able to teleport to the Assault zones, you need to run around a ton through high level aggro places and 'unlock' the teleporters. Oh, the other problem is travelling to the new expansion takes FOREVER. Thankfully the new continent is pretty self-sufficient, so unless you want to do low level stuff, you'll be pretty happy binding in the new city.

Anyway, I've been playing FFXI for about 2 and a half years, I still enjoy it. It's hard to get into sometimes since it almost always requires a lot more commitment than most parts of WoW, and as people mentioned, the economy is just awful. Thankfully I got everything I needed for my white mage before prices skyrocketed.
