I've never played a SMT game before, and I know this is a re-release of a game that's 3 years old, but I'll be playing it soon. Anything I should know?

You shoot yourself in the head to summon your persona/you are a high school ass. The plot is very...well play it. :(

Persona 3 was one of the best RPG's i've ever played, just get ready for a LOT of exposition.

Persona 3 portable seems like the best version of Persona 3. I already own P3 and P3:FES so I didn't really see the drive to buy the same game for a 3rd time, but Persona 3 is an amazing game.

Hope you have a basic understanding of japanese culture!

I agree with Syl that Persona 3 was one of the best RPGs I've played. At the very least, you can't be all snooty and racist about Japanese culture to get full enjoyment out of the game. They did not Americanize the whole thing just because it was being imported over (which I was personally glad to see) so if you're going to hate on certain things being distinctly Japanese (such as the art style) then you're probably not going to have a lot of fun.

Also, there is a massive amount of story that drives the game, as character interaction is one of the major keys to being successful even in combat. If you hate story and conversations in an RPG (and if you do, I would have to call you a heretic) then you will probably not enjoy Persona 3.

Yeah I should have said that...and demon mythology I guess.

Welp, I'm not a fan of Anime, but I can look past it as I have in the past, but I'm quite ignorant of most things relating to Japanese culture. Hopefully that won't effect my experience too much.

I played a little bit last night, and while it's got an interesting buildup, I'm wondering if the whole game is glorified menus and conversation... I haven't had direct control of anyone yet.

Don't worry, its not. Both Persona 3 and Persona 4 have a long introduction in order to introduce you to the characters and set the tone for the game. Personally, I kind of enjoy that they give you some regular time with the characters before everything goes down the drain.

I have been watching this release, solely based on the the pedigree of the original and my brief experience with Nocturne. I hesitated on my impulse PSN purchase after watching some game play videos and questioning if an adult man should be playing a game where the main character is a Japanese high school student. I did manage to overcome that and let my irrational inner teenager take over. I spent 2 hours playing after grabbing it off PSN last night and am happy with it so far.

Apparently (http://www.giantbomb.com/shin-megami-tensei-persona-3-portable/61-27861/), in the PSP version, they changed navigation outside of the dungeons to be a 2D point and click interface.

The most discernible and important difference is that all areas except the dungeon Tartarus are now drawn in 2D. A cursor is used to scroll around areas, click on characters to talk to them and navigate to other areas.

I don't mind it, it just seemed weird.

I can't imagine the game without those amazing anime cutscenes, especially the opening cutscene. I loved that one.

I've put roughly 5 hours into P3P, and I've got to wonder... does this game get more interesting? I've made it through 12 levels in Tartarus, fighting the same shadows over and over (with a few minor bosses here and there), in the same environments. I presume at some point Tartarus will change somewhat, but if this is just 250 levels of grind, I'm not gonna be happy.

The main point of the game isn't tarturus. You should be able to complete each section of tartarus in one, maybe two nights max. The game is entirely about everything that happens outside of tartarus.

It gets far more interesting, trust me.

Considering that P3P has basically image maps outside of Tartarus, I'm not sure this is the game for me. I thought the Social link stuff was specifically designed to help you through Tartarus.

Trust me, once the story gets moving, you won't want to turn away. It starts off slow, but around the summer you'll actually care. =p

I've wanted to play Persona 3 and 4 like mad, but I still have the original PSOne title on my looooong list of retro games "to finally get off my ass and playthrough" beforehand.

I just got through Valkyrie Profile and am on my second character in Saga Frontier, so Revelations: Persona is next on my list! :D

If you're talking about the magician link. He's not gay for you, he wants to bone his teacher. (Which, get into the Hermit link to see how that goes ;)

If you're talking about the french exchange student. Oh yeah, total queer.

From what I've heard about P3P, the developers added a few neat additions that weren't found in the original version such as being able to choose which gender you want to be as well as meeting certain characters from P4. Nonetheless, the game remains essentially the same as it was before.
