Maelstrom's factions revealed: the human race divided and the new alien threat

The futuristic RTS from creators of award-winning Perimeter to deliver unique play mechanics across three distinct playable factions.

Coming late September, exclusively for PC, Maelstrom is an action strategy title where Hollywood sci-fi meets groundbreaking RTS gameplay.

Set against the violent ecological meltdown of Earth, players will be able to unleash a tide of carnage with colossal transforming robots, crush enemies by raining down fire, level entire mountains, and freeze the oceans.

In this ravaged world, water has become the most valuable of resources and divided what remains of mankind in two: the urban freedom fighting Remnants and the technologically advanced Ascension. Now they must wage war against a new threat, the invasion of a savage alien race, the Hai-Genti, and each other in a desperate struggle for supremacy and survival.

The Remnants, Ascension and Hai-Genti form Maelstrom's three playable factions, each superbly different in terms of theme and play strategy:

The Remnants

# Led by ex-US military General James Buchanan, take charge with the heroic Remnants, as you modify your units on the fly to deal with the situation.

# Use stealth to infiltrate enemy lines, and guerrilla tactics to devise lethal traps involving napalm, proximity mines, bomb cluster chains and devastating nuclear weapons.

# Turn enemy units against their masters, as you hack into and control the Ascension's ruthless transforming tech, the Mechamorphs.

The Ascension

# Dominate with the insidious Ascension, headed by Arlan Khan, as you command the all-powerful Mechmorphs with their transforming technology.

# Fear no one with your advanced technology and shielded units, with their laser weaponry, cryogen rays and orbital weapon platforms, which strike down death from above.

# It's not just the Ascension's weaponry that can transform; if you need to relocate your base or buildings, these too can be transformed and moved on.

The Hai-Genti

# Attack the human factions as you command the full strike force of the invading Hai-Genti.

# Take on an altogether alien strategy and you fire down spores from the skies to grow an army of vicious bloodthirsty beasts.

# Launch surprise attacks and tear the humans limb from limb to feed your ravenous spores, the literal hearts of your campaign.

# Sacrifice your own units to produce even more vicious and deadly mutated monsters. After all, they're only fodder for the cause.

Complete with the ability to terraform landscapes and transform units, Maelstrom will provide strategy gamers with the power to harness the forces of nature in the most frantic, destructive, action-packed RTS game yet.

Based on an original concept by Codemasters and KDV Games, the Russian team behind the critically acclaimed Perimeter, and wrapped in a gripping science fiction scenario devised by screenwriter James Swallow, Maelstrom will launch in late September exclusively for PC. So that just mean they're not bothering to release it for Mac users? Consoles are hardly useful for RTS games.

Cool! The Hai-Genti and Ascension sound really cool. Hehehehe The Remnants might be in huge trouble if there's no special stuff for them. sorta like the imbalance between Horde and Alliance on WOW.

Didn't look that appealing at first but the fact it's made by creators of Perimeter got my attention :)

Am I the only one reminded of C&C Generals when I look at that SS?

No doubt about it that Blizzard's Starcraft is still one of the most successful RTS games ever created. They pioneered (and damn near perfected, IMO) the multiple, distinct races gametype. I would not be surprised if RTS developers were fans of Starcraft and studied the game.

And how old is Starcraft now? I still play it, and have never once been bored playing it, that's why I think Blizzard is so hesitant to do SC II, how can you top or even equal it?

Just copy it and make it look pretty at a higher res(without making it look WC3 stupid).

I'd pay $50 for that.

Looks pretty damn good, though I'm interested to know... did the battles depicted in those screenshots turn those buildings to rubble dynamically, or were they already like that? Either way it's pretty, for sure; but if the terrain/buildings are deformable, then I'll have a genuine going concern to keep checking this game out.

can see hair on troopers arm but cannot see more than a stone's throw of the battlefield = *yawn*

I'll download the screenshots.

I'm surprised the Korean government hasn't demanded Starcraft 2 from Blizzard yet. It'd be a huge boost to their economy, and throwing $50 million at Blizzard to get off their ass and make it would be a drop in the bucket.

I would, but (dead horse) I can't see the battlefield.
