Windows 8 leak: an App Store for Windows, IE9 beta in August (http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/06/leaked-windows-8-slides-an-app-store-for-windows-ie9-beta-in-august.ars)

A new "Windows Store" is perhaps the most ambitious feature described. Microsoft would offer a store service to third-party software developers. The store would allow easy discoverability of applications both from within Windows and from the Web.

The store would handle standard features like account management and software updates, as well as providing capabilities such as the ability to replicate applications and settings across different devices. The store would be curated, so only applications that reached a certain quality standard would be permitted.

The basic model, then, is a cross between Apple's App Store and Valve's Steam.

Windows is becoming like $DLC. I'll be using Windows 7 as long as I can because the only reason they are pushing new versions is the increased control and DRM for merchants products.

I don't see why they don't release an app store for Win7, tbh. Like, why wait.

I understand that Microsoft can't sit on their laurels; like hardware companies, they have to always be working on their next big thing.
With that being said, Win7 has been around as an official release for, what, a year? News of a new version this early in the game just feels absurd.

They come fast. Ive been running 7 for like 2 years and remember hearing about it a little over a year after vista came out. This app store thing will not work so good unless they lock windows down, in which case everyone including me will move to linux. Along with that goes the talented home devs. I dont think MS should do this. Could come back to bite them in the izzass. Linux is there, just waiting for the right time to break out.

I dunno, then again maybe app stores are just a consolidation place so all these home devs can make some money. Iphone OS and Android are changing things thats for sure.

MS wants to release an OS every 2 years, but can't seem to pull it off. Windows 7 seems so well done how can they really top it in a way that makes me want 8 over 7 anyway?

Did they finally make MS Paint something worth fucking using? Please say yes. I know they changed it a bit in 7 finally.
