Well I got a couple of hours in last night and noticed a few things. To make it rewarding they have made a leveling up process whereby you can buy better tanks, you start off with light crap Tanks and can research upgrades for them with mission experience and buy better tanks when you have some cash. The problem with this though is that all new starters are cannon fodder fore the more experienced players, not because of skill but because of a bigger and better tank. Also I think the fog of war is a bit naff as I have seen shots fired at me with no tank visible, even though it is straight in front of me. They then seem to de-cloak at random times.

Overall though it was very enjoyable for me so will keep playing till I earn a tank that can fight for itself, I hope it is not a long process.

Looks like I got into the beta...I think.

Did anyone else get the invite from worldoftanks.ru? I signed up from the link Meusli posted. I'm downloading the beta now so it'll be a while before I know if I have a good code.

I know enough russian that I was able to recognize "world of tanks" and closed-beta" in the email subject, but I'm not sure I want to try to figure out a new game in russian. Hopefully the russian beta code works with the english download.

They're almost identical.

Anyway, my code worked on the english language web site so I'm in the game (as Subbota).

I experienced the same early frustrations you mentioned. But once you get the hang of it you find that's not so much about what you're driving as using what you've got effectively. They limit all matches to similar tank "tiers" so guys with more expensive tanks don't necessarily have a strong advantage. I think a bigger advantage is having a highly trained crew in the tank. I do better with the free tank I started with than the T-26 I thought I was upgrading to. Sometimes it's better to stick with a "weaker" tank if it's got a better crew.

Some tips:

- As a new player, hang onto the free tank and don't upgrade the gun right away. The ammo for the default gun might be a bit weak, but it's free. If you upgrade it first you might find yourself with a slow pig with expensive ammo.

- After you're killed, you can right click to switch to teammates' views and see how they play. You can also exit the battle (you'll get full credit when it completes) and use your other free tank in another match while you wait for the first to end.

- Before spending experience on upgrade research, check the upgrade out form the garage screen. For some reason that's the only place you can see the benefit of the upgrade. Also check your weight versus capacity. New guns/turrets/engines may need a track upgrade first.

- Check your visibility range in the garage. You can increase it sometimes with turret upgrades. It's also affected by whether you're moving and if you're behind cover or in bushes.

- If you see a long arcing shot coming your way, you're visible to an enemy and one of his artillery buddies is about to rain down indirect death on your position. Start moving or get behind something tall. Also beware that you're lit up red on every enemy mini map, and red dots tend to get converged on really quick.

- To max out the effectiveness of your tank, research every upgrade even if you don't want it. As soon as you do it earns elite status which will let you put all earned experience back into the crew so they'll improve faster. A skilled gunner can make a big difference.

- Try to stick with a group! A fast lone scout can wreak havoc, but in general a new player who runs out ahead is going to have a really short match.

- Friendly fire is ON! Careful with that gun. You can put a teammate's eye out with that.

Now that I have my own SPG with a decent crew, I'm usually at or near the top of the list in tank strength, but I'm still a newb and tend to get beat by better players and better tactics even when they're in "crap" tanks.

Wait till you get to tier 3 and all you have is a light tank with a fly squatter as a gun and heavy behemoths in front of you lining up to taking shots. Your life span is roughly 3 mins max, but it still good fun. Do you know you can train your guys up with cash, I usually train my first lot to 50 use them to upgrade the vehicle and then transfer them to my new tank.

I think I've unlocked one tier 3 tank but I'm still a long way from being able to afford the tank let alone the crew school. I'm still working on getting my tier 2 tanks up to elite status and I think my best crew is still only around 45%.

The code request process seems to be hit and miss. You might get one in a few days but some people have waited weeks. They just announced a couple of euro sites giving away codes here (http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/7334-wwweurogamerit-hands-out-wot-closed-beta-keys/) and here (http://game.worldoftanks.com/news/general_news/grab-activation-code-computer-bild-spiele-and-get-m3-stuart), although the sites are in italian and german and you'll need to search for the codes.

Been playing this off and on since this past weekend (Oct. 2nd). Cool concept, and pretty fun (once you start to figure out the pacing and the maps - plus get some research under your belt). Still, I can see the trajectory of this game already. Either this is your game (think WoW raiders) and you play fairly religiously and keep ahead of the research/development curve. Or you're a casual player and fall behind. The former - your Maus tank leaves only buring wreckage in its wake. The latter - you spend a lot of time in the garage waiting for the smoldering wreck of your tank that got crushed by someone's Maus to return for repairs.

I ran into the same thing with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - or at least how I see this going. Didn't pick up the game on the PC until well after launch. By the time I started playing, the bulk of my opponents had unlocked better weapons and gear for multiplayer. I just couldn't keep up. Frustrating, and not an experience I'd care to repeat.

I have a lot of fun with my little "outgunned" tanks when going up against the big boys, but you have to change your play style up a bit. After the recent soft wipe I was zooming around in a tier 8 t-44 (the medium that the high tier heavies seem to fear) but lately I've gone back to my tier 4-5 tanks and have been having a blast.

The more players they get, the better the matchmaking works. When I was playing on Saturday I had a lot of games where everyone was within a couple tiers of my tank. And when they throw me in there with a bunch of high tiers I can't really fight, I change my tactics and play a support role.

One of the important tricks to having fun with the game is to own multiple tanks instead of selling an old one every time you buy a new one. I usually keep my garage full so I can jump from tank to tank if I'm getting killed early and I have a little variety if I get tired of playing the same tank all the time.

I started BC2 about 3-4 weeks late and really enjoyed it despite not having the best weapons. I think both games really do a good job of providing support roles a newer player can take on if you can't match up on firepower.

Stick with it mate as the more you play the more upgrades you get which makes the tanks better. It always sucks when you get a new tank, you just have to stay in the background and take pot shots. I have just upgraded to a new medium that is slow, un-powerful and a big target it's awful. But when I get it upgraded one piece at a time it will be a powerhouse.

Also what Samstag said, have a light, medium tank destroyer and an spg to cycle through so you always have a tank and always have a choice.

Picked up an SPG yesterday, but haven't played with it yet. I get what you're saying, I just need to adjust my expectations from Modern Warfare to something closer to WoW Battlegrounds, I think.

When is this thing actually launching? Seems like a completed project, imho.

That's a good question. The game as it is now is already officially launched in russia, but there are a lot of improvements still on the way, like adding tons of new tanks and a persistent-world clan battle system. Since it's free to play, I think they just decided to call it "launched" in russia so they can start charging for premium features.

I think they're still aiming for late October or early November to launch in the US/Europe, but most of the dates and feature additions have been moving targets.

Okay, n00b question of the day, gentlemen. I tried out the SPG yesterday (which was really, really fun). Problem is, after I use the ctrl-right click on the mini-map to get into the birds eye view...I can't get back to the regular 3rd person behind the tank view.

What am I missing? Is there a keyboard command to restore the normal view? I couldn't find anything in the F1 window. Help?

The shift key toggles between 3rd person and overhead view when you're in an SPG. In anything else it toggles between 1st and 3rd person.

I just unlocked my next SPG the Grille! It seemed like I was plugging away at the Wespe stats forever, 12995 for the last upgrade was a long time coming.

One piece of advice to give you guys that I have been learning lately is that you do not sell all your old upgraded tanks when you buy your next one. Use these to earn free experience to help upgrade your new tanks as they do not fight very well with basic weapons.
