ATI Releases the Chuck Patch

ATI released a beta patch (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=21960) on Thursday that enabled the use of both HDR and AA in Oblivion. When asked for the reason why it's called the "Chuck" patch, an ATI spokesperson had this to say:

All this about HDR in this game is kind of funny, because in all honesty HDR looks like crap on Oblivion. Slightly tweaked bloom lighting and good AA displays a much better image. HDR is simply way too overexposed.

The 'Chuck Norris' jokes are a vicious circle. One person discovers it, finds it funny for a relatively short amount of time, then discards it when it no longer has any comedic value. However, while this one particular person did like them he made sure to post them on various places on the internet. Another person discovers it, and the circle repeats itself.

It won't go away anytime soon... it's kind of like the owls, goatse and all that stuff. Some internet memes simply live far longer than others.

I just reinstalled xp and grabbed the 6.3 catalyst drivers from ATI. Would the omegas be better? Especially for Oblivion (which I just got and is GREAT!) since I have a 9800 pro. This patch seems to be for crossfire or at least I think so as I haven't checked out video cards since I bought this one and am not sure what's what. The whole X series skipped by me and will probably get nvidia next time for linux compatibility. As far as the Chuck jokes, my wife loves Chuck Norris and this is totally new to me so they are funny as hell! So anyway, about those drivers...

Now now, the modders have done an amazing job so far bringing it up to PC standards and it's only been what, a month or something? Just give us the tools to fix the game with TES5 and we'll do it ourselves.

I don't think they were lieing...this is something that is supported at a low level hardware function on a single type of graphics chip.

Chuck @ ATI In a way. When I first read that Oblivion wouldn't initially support HDR+AA, I was shocked and disappointed. Like everyone else, I was really looking forward to the stunning graphics in Oblivion and I wanted to turn on all the bells and whistles and see what it could do on the X1900. I knew that I could actually do something to get HDR+AA working for end users right away, so I went to work on a driver patch. I'll give you more details later.

And Ubi makes some pretty excellent PC-Console games. Splinter Cell plays VERY well on mouse+keyboard, and the interface is excellent. They did fuck up the Cube versions of SC, but the PC ones were top.
