This article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060407/ap_on_hi_te/online_sex_games;_ylt=Al7rxGgKU6lrTy6.eKHqtsys0NUE ;_ylu=X3oDMTA3cjE0b2MwBHNlYwM3Mzg-) from the AP (via Yahoo! News (www.yahoo.com)) discusses the upcoming wave of massively-multiplayer adult-oriented games:

Flirting and dating have been rife in online games like "Everquest" and "World of Warcraft" — even leading to marriage between players — despite a lack of romantic or sexual features in the games.

On the other hand, sex-oriented games like "Playboy: The Mansion" and "VirtuallyJenna" have been single-player games with no online component, and thus no interaction between players.

This new crop of adults-only games would combine the player-player interaction of the online games and the graphic sexuality of the single-player games.
I tried Second Life and was both amazed and disgusted at what was going on there. They're aiming these at the 'casual' players; but what do you think? Is this good or bad for the industry?

It's always strange how people want to confuse romance with pornography. People meeting and falling in love over more pedestrian interfaces is one thing, and people outfitting themselves with raunchy avatars and going at it in all their pixellated glory is entirely another.

They're two very different groups of people and markets that intersect only marginally, so just because you've got people hooking up in WoW doesn't mean that there are that many people who want to play VirtuaPimp Online.

I agree. The MMO market (oh gosh, I just realized MMOO will become Massively Multiplayer Online Orgy) is a bit different than the dating sim market. I just wonder how the hell this is going to be any different than chatting it up in a chat room with someone you hope is the opposite sex. What the heck will game play be like? Is it going to be standard MMO attack? Right click here to orgasm? I just don't see it being that good unless they make a real game and just have the sexual component built into that. Then again, sex sales and there are plenty of internet sex chat rooms.

I can't wait, frankly. As someone who has "cybord" online a few times, I think it'll be a great and long-awaited venue for cyber-sex. I've said it before many times, there is an absolutely massive market out there for interactive sex simulators. I'm hesistant to call them "games"... but whatever.

Sex sells. This will become the most common and profitable type of videogame, just as in the movie industry, pornography is the most common and profitable type of video.

They are always aming at the casual gamers, yet the majority always ends up being powergamers with no lives.

I'm not sure I want to watch my avatar's pixel shaded shiny butthole gang raped by a chinese gold farming guild after the loot my body.

And to think I was just starting to like you based on your opinions in the Iraq thread you started. Now I'm not so sure. ;)

Stuff like this scares the crap out of me and I'm glad that all those X rated games have failed. I sincerely hope some consevitive nut ball stomps the shit out of it. Not because of the fear of sex but the fact that sex sells. I just fear that good programmers will rush over to the soon to be profitable virtua porn industry and gamers will be left with dogshit.

You'd think these industry geniouses would bounce stuff like this off people before investing time and money into something so tacky and controversial.

-Cue the hysterical class action law suit threatening soccer moms! Outraged that their innocent little credit card thieving 14 year-olds were scarred for life when they met greasy internet predators on yet another depraved iteration of an internet role playing game, (that they mistakenly bought for them to shut them up).
And then: Cue all the deviants and sexual assault defendants pleading innocence that it was in fact this "videogame" that had encouraged them to emulate the vile and despicable acts that will bring them before the courts...

Then: Cue the Japanese! Who will buy this like its crack laden sushi.

At the very least, its sure to take the heat off GTA and those poor todder eating pittbulls hogging the headlines these days.

-So its all good! :D

And now for the weather...

I really don't think that they are going to let you rape one another as some people have hinted at. The Chinese gold farmer comment made me laugh out loud though.

Nothing wrong with a game like this until your account gets hacked and next time you log in you've gone gay and are at the bottom of a man pile.

I have never considered that before, but now you got me scared to.

Edit: Reading some other post and rethinking it a big, I am not so worried any more.

I dont see a problem with this, arent these games created specifically for people with alot of time on their hands?

I think we just need do some damage control, before these games take over our MMORPG market! So my idea is to get blizzard to create a new WoW Expansion Pack. World of Porncraft: The Burning Loins.

It won't happen for the very same reason we don't see Francis Ford Coppola making "Debbie Does Khazakstan".

I'm honestly a little suprised at how puritanical the responses here are, in light of how generally liberal (in a good way) the folks here are. What's the problem with people liking sex? Liking nude people engaged in sex? Is there something shameful or horrible about something we all enjoy? If a company wants to get together to product a product there is clearly a market for, what's the problem?

Need I note there is a post about Tomb Raider's boob (with NSFW pic!) and it couldn't illustrate better the interest in virtual boobs.

Really? Do you feel a virtual sex simulator for people online is a bad thing?

It won't necessarily work that way. It didn't work that way with movies, for example. You don't see Scorsese filming Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon going at it, even if they could sell DVDs of it for $100 a piece (I'd be first in line).

The game's industry is a bit more profit-driven instead of art-driven when compared to movies, but then some games are more arty than others and some movies are more profit-driven than others.

I just don't see any reason to worry.

I'm not a fan of porn games. Porn itself? sure I like some of it. But they like any medium, should be allowed to be made or sold. You don't have to buy it or see it . It's not like someone's coming into your house and making you play it. But for some reason "sex" and the term "porn" bothers people in this country. Why does sex all of a sudden become an evil thing in games? but shooting 3d models in the face that were built to react, bleed and die realistically has become allowed and tolerated over the years? I've never understood this sort of thinking, especially in the U.S.

Killing = Totally ok
Sex = Baaaaaaaaaad!

I'm quite indifferent. I'd put it in the same category as sports games: something I'm not interested in playing.

But. If it had a demo, I would probably check it out. You know. For research.

FINALLY! The USB dildo attachment will get the credit it diserves!

Heh actually when I saw this story the first thought that went through my head was how many lawsuits are going to be filed against the first true online sex simulator. Can't you hear it now? 'My 10 year old daughter (who has a credit card of course) played your game is now scarred for life!'

Not to mention that there is room here for some truly deviant sexual practices to be brought into the mainstream. I mean what do you think average Joe Blow would say if he saw furries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furries) for the first time?

Makes me think of what Dennis Miller wrote in "The Rants"

Scientist estimate that by the end of this century, via the means of virtual reality, a man will be able to simulate making love to any woman he wants through his television set. You know folks, the day an unemployed ironworker can lie in his BarcaLounger with a Foster’s in one hand and a channel-flicker in the other and f*ck Claudia Schiffer for $19.95, it’s gonna make crack look like Sanka.

The biggest problem the online porn industy faces is 1) Wives, 2) Payment.

You can't pay for this using paypal. They specifically prohibit it and when it shows up on the CC and the wife catches on, the man typically claims someone got the card number and goes into full denial mode. Chargeback rates on porn sites are sky high which is one reason many use alternate payment methods. Many porn sites can't get/keep a merchant account. Chargeback fee's often cost more than the original sub in the first place.

So, if I was one of these companies, the first thing I'd do before I spent a dime was figure out how to flow cash from the customer to the company. It's not a trivial issue. I'm not convinced a porn MMO can sustain itself either. I imagine the turnover, once they figure out how to get paid, will be incredible.

Now the Japanese are experimenting with 3d animated porn. It's pretty good if I do say so, Characters aren't quite "DOA4" class animations but, it's getting that way. I find it interesting enough. I imagine once it becomes realistic, it'll pull one plank out of the anti-porn agenda because, no real women are being abused.

That was Miller while he was hosting Dennis Miller Live on HBO. The various Rants books were collections of his monologues from those shows.
