View Full Version : Square Enix Shooter on the 360?

Gamespot (www.gamespot.com) has an interesting article (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2006/04/06/news_6147242.html?part=rss&tag=gs_&subj=6147242) up about Square Enix making an exclusive shooter for the Xbox360.
The biggest announcement during today's Xbox 360 conference in Tokyo was the unveiling of a new exclusive title by Square Enix. Although that was a big enough surprise for the attending press, what caught them even more off guard was that the game wouldn't be a role-playing game. The publisher of Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior is instead working on a shooter with Game Arts, developer of the Grandia RPG series.
Square Enix exclusive on the 360? Square Enix making a non-RPG game? That's a bit unexpected...
Edit: There's a demo video of this game, codenamed Project Sylph, here at Xboxyde. (http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2430_1_en.html) Seems to be a 3D space shooter.

Umm...yeah. You see, when Square-Enix got on board with the 360...it was supposed to be for RPGs. You know, something the XBox 360 needed, not for shooters, which is something the XBox 360 doesn't need.

Hehe, the title of the Gamespot article only mentions that Square Enix is making an exclusive for 360. My first thought was "Gosh dang it, now I need to get an Xbox360."
My wallet let out a sigh of relief when I learned that the 360 wasn't getting an exclusive RPG :D.

If it's anything like the amazing Einhander on the PS1, I might just have to get an XBOX 360.

Haha. So squenix is like, "Lets make a game for that console that only Americans use. They only play games with guns, right?"

If it's anything like the amazing Einhander on the PS1, I might just have to get an XBOX 360.I agree, Einhander was great. If they mean horizontal or vertical shooter than this is great news. If they mean FPS than I doubt Square could make one that was any good.

As long as it doesn't have anything to do with the Final Fantasy universe I'll give it a chance. I've yet to play a Square-Enix that interests me so I'm not very optimistic..

I love it when people act like Square can't make anything other than RPGs. I mean.. Rad Racer was their first game. And if Einhander wasn't the best shooting game of it's time, possibly all time, and if Tobal wasn't the best fighting game of it's time, possibly all time, I'm not sure what is.
Personally I love it when Square makes games that aren't RPGs because their RPGs have gotten pretty tired lately.

Agreed for the Einhander... I loved that game and probably will attempt to aquire it from Ebay sometime.
I'm always up for Squeenix to make non-rpg games... I just don't have a 360 though and don't really plan on getting one.

How stupid is MS? They get the top japanese Publisher to make a FPS, a genre the the japanese gamers dislike? They really DON'T want to make money, right?

At least Square-Enix is "cool" again for the Xboys.

I keep seeing these companies taking risks on the system they consider the most risky to them. I think it is a cop out, like if it fails then it wouldn't be their fault.
You know Square could say well its because Microsoft is lame, and Microsoft could say hey make an rpg you know what your good at. It is a risk free relationship builder.
They more then likely are just testing the Xbox market. If it works I would excpect to see alot more.

It's not an FPS, it's a shooter like Gradius, Raiden Trad or Radiant Silvergun, which last time I checked are very popular in Japan. Hope it really is a sequel to Silpheed, that game still stands out as one of the games that made the lack of Mega-CD software seem less painful after I spent all that money to import one.

Einhander for Live Arcade? Campcom and Namco are already on board with Streetfighter / Bomberman, and it would be a good way for Squeenix to test the water without investing in a huge next-gen exclusive.

When ever a Japanese company uses the term shooter it's pretty much means a non FPS. You kiddies have to remember before all these new fangled game started coming out the only shooters were gun games and side scrollers.

How about Square-enix just buy the rights to bring Radiant Silvergun to the 360? Please? If it is one game I'd love see it make it to the states in pure form it is that game. Einhander kicked ass. I can hope can't I?
Though lately, square-enix/soft offshoots have been shitty. Bouncer? Ultimate Saga (yeah, it's a rpg, but it sucked so bad I thought I'd mention it anyway)? Still, an Einhander (or similar shooter) would be sweet. Old-school FTW!

Urgh... according to Joystiq, it is going to be an 'arcade-style fps (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/06/square-enix-announces-fps-for-360-codenamed-project-sylph/)' codenamed Project Sylph.
Tri-Ace are supposedly working on an honest-to-god 360 exclusive RPG though, so maybe it's not all bad news =/ (I'd kill for another Valkyrie Profile).
Edit: Xboxyde have screenshots (http://xboxyde.com/news_2753_en.html) and a video (http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2430_1_en.html), and it call me crazy but it looks like a shooter, not an fps (and a fairly pretty one at that). I'm so confused now.

It didn't get great reviews in Japan, though. Still, they don't overly like running and gunning games, so hopefully they are wrong in their reviews.
It looks like since its name/codename is "Project Slyph" and it's an arcade shooter it's probably related to Silpheed in some way or another.

The X360 is certainly getting MORE RPGs than it's predecessor though. They are making a mistake by not getting a Japanese turn-based one out in the US before the PS3 launch though. Oblivion is definitely selling systems, but a good next-gen J-RPG would sell even more.

Dirge of Cerebus is not even out yet
It's out in Japan. Neither the Japanese media (Famitsu) nor early impressions of the game from U.S. publications (Electronic Gaming Monthly) have been positive. I've heard nothing but average things about the game from all the people I know who played it as well. The game has a whole array of issues. Typical rookie mistakes from a team inexperienced with the genre. Don't get your hopes up just because it's FFVII.
As long as it doesn't have anything to do with the Final Fantasy universe I'll give it a chance. I've yet to play a Square-Enix that interests me so I'm not very optimistic..

Consider yourself part of a minority.
For the most part I don't consider the FF series all that impressive. I enjoyed VI the most, VII was pretty good, VIII was just plain repetitive from the get-go, never even wanted to try IX, I had to force myself to play X and felt it was way too linear, and XI was just a grind, plain and simple.
It'll be interesting to see what Square can come up with.

You may not have to kill anyone, take a look on the web for Valkyrie Profile 2, don't know if its actually out in Japan yet, but it exists with a beautiful website. Looks like is a PS2 game also.

Umm, didn't any of you notice that the game is just being published by square-enix. It's being made by Game Arts ... the company responsible for Grandia, Thexder, GunGriffon, Lunar, and ... wait for it ... Silpheed. I would think this is prolly going to be a 3-D spinoff/sequal to that.

Surely much longer than that.
Having watched the demo movie (which actually had 2 seconds of gameplay, surprisingly) I'd have to say that this looks pretty interesting. It seems to have an actual plot as well, which is a highly optional component in that genre.

Japanese golden touch? More like golden shower.
Could they have possibly announced a lamer game. This makes Microsoft look desperate.
And what's up with the recent influx of Japanese ball lickers? I'm starting to feel like I'm at an anime convention.

Hard to tell too much from the movie, but more Japanese developer support for the Xbox 360 can only be a good thing for Microsoft.
Off topic, please stop quoting Pumped'Up. He's on my ignore list for a reason! Hm... If everyone simply added him to his or her ignore list, it would be like he didn't exist!

He had a point though. Japanese games from developers like Nintendo and Square tend to be highly polished - especially Nintendo's offerings. You don't get this nearly as often in games from Western developers.
Few developers can really match Nintendo's level of polish, which is unfortunate.
