View Full Version : ...And if they're Stupid Enough to Walk Across the Desert without Camels...

GamersInfo.net (http://www.gamersinfo.net) posted their first in a weekly series of interviews with Tracy Spaight, Creative Director of Africa MMO:

I want to make the desert so that it's an actual desert. So, if you're stupid enough to wander out there without your camel and a mess of water bags, you're probably going to die. I want to make it so that it's a bit of an ordeal - not so that it's punishing and you hate your life but so that it's a bit of an ordeal. If you try to go from Timbuktu to Sijilmasa you have to deal with desert raiders, Taureg and herders that prey upon tourists. They still to that to this day - if you were to travel out there today they'd probably steal your automobile and all the rest of your belongings.
There's much more about the beginning design concepts here (http://www.gamersinfo.net/index.php?art/id:971) and more in the weeks to come.

I've been waiting decades for an MMO version of Oregon Trail. Maybe this is it. :D

"Tracy Spaight: I know that when I play games, I don't like it when I can only be a rope maker and I'm limited to just that. If you really want to, you can be a magic-wielding, glass-blower. If that's your thing - be whatever you want. We're not going to say you can't be something."

A magic weilding glass-blower, eh? Now I've been a magic weilder OR a glass blower, but never a magic weilding glass-blower. Oh Tracy, you've outdone yourself! Where can I preorder?

Probably not, but one can hope...

This is your official notifcation from the spelling and grammar Nazi party that you have directly or indirectly violated party policy.

Your infraction is being reposted, as follows:

They still to that to this day -

End of message.

Eh, I'm transcribing. 3+ hours. You should see some of it I clean up and it's exhausting. Trying figuring out 13th century African tranlations of words for places and things that don't exist any more and then see if you care about modern grammar!

Aiieee!

(and fixed)

I hope it never does. It sounds horrible. "Golden Stool" indeed.

Wait, why do you hope it never gets completed, just because you don't think it sounds fun? I mean, I get that part, I'm not convinced it sounds like my bag either, but why hope for it to never be completed? Seems a bit harsh to me to hope that all products you don't like never make it to stores.

Wow, haven't seen a double post here in a while.

Anyway, this game sounds right up my alley--crafting and realistic exploration? Together you say? You'll take my money you say?

Deliciousness in large amounts.

A Tale In the Desert (http://game1.atitd.com/main.html) is still afloat, so who knows, there may be a market for noncombat oriented MMOs.

ATITD has a very good early game and everyone there kind of agreed that part was great but I didn't care for the end game. I think there's potential for non-combat MMO's I just don't think anyone has quite gotten the knack of making it appeal to everyone.

I agree that this game will never make it to retail and for a very good reason. The creative director isn't even thinking about real game concepts right now, he's just shooting the shit with whoever will listen. Before a game can even be started they have to come up with some idea of its direction. Right now it sounds like the direction is 'real life, but fun! but with other stuff, like lions, oh and you can do anything! except not.'

I just can't help but whonder what goes through the heads of those who actually put money on the table to invest in making this game... do they really think this is a good idea?
