The game is free to play for one year (from now to March of 2007), no credit card required.

Look over here (http://planetside.station.sony.com/reserves/) to sign up for a "PlanetSide Reserves" account and download the 2gb client package.

You'll likely be exposed to ads, but still, bottom-line is it's free!

I've played the free trials they've had for this before... Even with it being free right now, I'm not motivated to give it another chance.

I played this some time back but couldn't justify the pay2play requirement so I let it go. There are too many other FPSs that are Free...but am definatly gonna give it another go now that its gone Free as well...for a year anyway...

Thanks for the heads up guys...see ya online...Travis

Or you could just watch this video and get the full Planetside experience in under 20 megs.

Nice video, perhaps the free factor might drive some players in, if even temporarily.

It was a fantastic game when it had a ton of players, but as the player base dropped off the whole point of the game - capturing bases and whole islands - ceased to exist without people to fight against.

A great concept. If it had been like Guild Wars where you purchase the game and then can play for free it might have continued to be a success.

Yes.

I remember the story being that you can't advance past BR 7 or CR 1. . . so basically you can't level up very much at all, but you get enough room to be able to play the game in some capacity if you want to recert and try different stuff out.

I disagree. When this came out online gaming was not nearly the size that it is today. Most people and a large portion of PC gamers have never even heard about this game.

Plus, it's SOE. They don't design new content fast enough to keep a game like this alive based on expansion sells.

It's been quite some time since I played Planetside. I was BIG into it when it came out, and I pre-ordered the Core-whatever it was expansion. That video only shows some small delays in the action that I remember. Usually, I got hot-dropped into an action zone, found my squad, and either covered or assaulted WITH cover. I thought it was GREAT.

I stopped playing when that expansion came out and there were some crazy nerfs that changed the weapons around. Nothing like playing for months and then finding out your weapon isn't a shotgun anymore, it's a rifle, or vice versa. WTF QUIT.

I don't think I'll be going back either, and not because of the game (which i loved, and miss!) but because I refuse to do anything Sony. Who cares about ads when I could be downloading rootkits?

www.hexcorps.net/OhPlanetside.wmvHaha, I let that commercial play three times before I realized that was the rest of the video. Pretty funny.

I'm downloading this, but just as something to play on a rainy day... it looks pretty similar to Tribes 2, except for being an MMO, and since I've recently gotten back into Tribes 2 (getting my midair-disc groove on, woot) I won't be installing Planetside for a while.

Yeah, I'm sure Sony would love to have us all download a free 2GB of rootkits while we play Planetside. Plus they rake in tons of dough by forcing people to watch ads throughout the game. No thanks, Sony!
Game looks cool, but the Sony name is going to keep me away.

Planetside was awesome way back in the day...how alive is the community still? I remember at one point my old outfit had about 600 members, about 100 of which would be online at any given time. Loads of fun to work as the head commander, taking bases on 2 continents at the same time, using feints to make them thing bases were being assaulted, and then sweep other continents away from them. What fun.

I'll be picking this up...but i think it's CR3, and BR 13 or something...which means you've got about 2/3rds of the abilities of the paid soldiers...not bad for free.

I'm so forced to watch ads while assaulting a base. Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem that intrusive...i guess i'll find out when i DL the game. I find your rootkit comments laughable though. "OMGS SONY IS TEH ROOTKITZ!"

Also, I just tried this. Had no idea what was going on. Pretty crappy interface.

Planetside peaked when oshur blew up. After that, there was no real reason to keep playing. Battle islands are a bog down attrition war. BFR's are just stupid. The population also died off drastically.

This is a game that is long past it's prime. However I am not against seeing it come back from the meager death that awaits it.

...just not a financial one, lol. Guild Wars can work that model because their hosting requirements are trivial in comparison to a real MMORPG. IIRC, Planetside is more of a persistent world, thusly requiring significantly more in terms of ongoing maintenance costs.

That makes me think this is just an effort to give paying players some cannon fodder to keep them paying for another year, instead of quitting because of lack of overall playerbase.

Sorta like going to a free dinner, but finding out you're the meal. :p

Can anyone make a fucking account? Honestly, Sony. If you can't make it easy to play your game for free, NOBODY IS GOING TO GO THROUGH THE HASSLE TO MAKE IT WORK.

Fuck your shit Sony.

When I try to create an account I get "We are sorry but the page was called without an attached Game Code. Without it, the registration cannot be accepted."

Free for a Year, does this still entail the Battle Rank 6 limitation? They originally were supposed to "launch" the free version around Feburary 15th-16th with a limitation on the free accounts, you couldn't get higher than BR6. Since it's free for a year now and not, forever as they said before, is this limitation still there?

Trencher
03-27-2006, 07:36 AM
Yes, still BR6/CR2.

PS is an acquired taste for sure but I love it. Once you figure out how things work (which really doesn't take that long) it's just pure action. Like most MMOs the most fun can usually be had with a squad (group) or outfit (guild) and using VOIP to communicate. The worst thing about it in my mind is how much potential it has that hasn't, isn't, and never will be take advantage of by SOE.

As for whether or not this demo works I just reactivated my account a week or so ago and as soon as this thing went live I saw tons of newbies running around. More fodder... good times!

Knightsaber
03-27-2006, 09:05 AM
Screw that, they put limitations on this year-long free account and they might as well just put out a 'demo' that works for a year instead. Which is all this really is.

Nope, still sucks, nice try.

Can anyone post screenshots of how the game looks with the ingame ads? I'm really curious to see what kind of products are being pushed to Planetside players.

Also, is the lattice system still in use for bases?

Perhaps the thought that if I'm making the exact same mistake, twice, it might be intentional.
