View Full Version : PS3 at GDC: Reality check

PS3 demos were finally running on (close to) real hardware and, while not bad, failed to come anywhere close the level of last year E3. Gaming Age (http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2006/3/22-53) has some impressions.

The Getaway demo was shown yet again showing the importance of a large format since the single area of the demonstration was several hundred MB. The highlight of the conference began with the Warhawk demonstration. GDC essentially confirmed that everything game related Sony showed at E3 was purely rendered footage and was no indication of the final product.
Well still 5 months to improve things... a bit like wine.

Man, that presentation has gotten me so hyped for the PS3. Did you see that game Resistance: Fall of Man? Wow, WWII AND Aliens.. in the same game! Driving games, War games... more driving games. I'll tell ya, the future of gaming looks verrrry rosy.

Well, the prerendered looking Getaway demo at last E3 was realtime, as was proven now at GDC. Not all of the games were prerendered...

All in all, I'm very excited about PS3...and region free - god damn, about time!

Give it up guy. Sony gave out more bs to hype ppl up. I have no doubt that when it's said and done these games will look gorgeous, but not in the calibur of those "real time" movies.

I'll buy my PS3 early next year, but i think ill get a 360 or a revolution first.

Err.. That has to be the most bland, and uninteresting review I've ever read...
...maybe it just feels rushed...

Anyway, don't let me interrupt your fun, go on.

I could care less about the other demo's shown. The Getaway looks good and UT2007 looks good, I think those are more respectable representations.

Hmmm. Picked the article with the worste impressions for a thread instead of the other 10-15 on the web  . Self explanatory.

I hope Sony with Killzone and Microsoft with its Madden Trailer have both learned that it's not really a good idea to release a trailer for a game if you don't know 100% that the game is going to look a certain way. Or at least, I hope they base their trailers on reality and not on-paper hardware specifications.

Maybe... but I found most "impressions" to be just a description of what happened. None really gave an opinion and a more detailed explanaition of what could be seen. If you can find one that does, please post it.

As I was watched the keynote and visited the sony booth, I have to be honest, nothing I saw could not be done on a 360.

How is the GDC this year. It sounds like its changed tons since I was last there. Is it really as E3ish as it sounds, or are there still a fair number of technical tracks going on. GDC is really starting to sound like a hype factory. Crawford must be rolling over in his grave (minus the fact he aint dead).

I have two comments:

1) I think that BOTH Sony and MS are holding out on us for E3. By which I mean that the best stuff is probably being saved for E3.

2) I fully expect to see absolutely nothing for this entire generation on either system that could not be done on the other one. In other words, ALL of the exclusives will be paid for this time by either MS or Sony...

Well I am not basing my expectations on much of anything that Sony, MS or even Nintendo says. I am basing them partially on the hardware specs but mostly on the very real trends in game development today.

The bottom line is that production values are the biggest limitation on how a game looks and runs these days. I fully expect that even if the "lowish" sounding specs for the Nintendo Revolution are true (and I suspect that they are) that there will be plenty of competitive looking Nintendo games for the 1st couple years at least just because of this other more significant limitation.

This switch from hardware to software being the major limitation in terms of what can be possible in a game is a major change for the whole industry.

I often make this point, but it seems that nobody ever believes me... No matter how much evidence mounts up, people would rather discuss the increasingly irrelevant hardware specs. than the increasingly relevant production models and software tools.

The big important technologies of the game industry are not new hardware platforms so much as they are the tools and middleware that are getting inserted into the flow. And, since most of the major players can get these tools, this has the effect on this industry that the colt revolver had on the old west. The playing field is MUCH more level than anyone realizes...

In other words I expect some REAL competition this time around.

And I fail to see why this situation should make me sad??? I don't feel very sad about it. Seems like a pretty good arrangement to me...

god, could that reviewer have made it any more obvious that he found the presentation boring and underwhelming? way to go presenting just the facts...

Personally, I think Lair will look best, based on what was running at E3 '05.

region free was the first smart anti-piracy move I have seen in quite some time.

That's why they are "demos" and not "final" versions...
