Video game trade show = shaky cam videos of upcoming games!

Crysis and Epic put demos of their latest software and beautiful hi-def monitors, and the fine folks at 1UP (http://www.1up.com/) were kind of enough to whip out their cell phones and snag us some video.

First, UT2K7. (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148958) It was played on a PS3, as you can tell from the ducks in a tub demo that precedes the game footage. Kind of a boring clip, some goober running his guy around a foundry type room, shooting at barrels that react in the pseudo-realistic fashion that's the hallmark of FPS physics. To think it was only 13 years ago that we were all salivating over the exploding barrels in DOOM. And look at us now, shooting at invulnerable barrels that kind of sort of react like real life barrels. Ah, progress.

But then, Crysis! (http://www.1up.com/do/download?cId=3147565) Unplayable, so take what you see with a grain of salt, but holy smokes! Those Crytek boys really know how to put together a pretty demo. If the final game actually looks like that, it'll definitely be a contender for best sci-fi jungle based first person shooter of all time!

Crysis looks really cool, but UT2K7 was kind of meh. Of course, it was playable, and Crysis was only there in movie form, so who knows?

Holy christ, that Crysis demo is amazing. I'd be happy even if it was just a rehash of Far Cry with a massive graphical upgrade and the Trigens removed, but I suspect it'll be more than that. The way the foliage interacts with characters, parting as they pass through it, will do more than any other new feature to increase the feeling of actually being in the jungle -- rigid foliage was a major immersion-breaker for me in Far Cry.

I don't know why they even showed that UT2k7 demo. Maybe they just wanted to show off the fact that they had a playable demo ready? The Shock Rifle and Rocket Launcher effects are pretty, but whoever was playing didn't even know how to use the secondary fire... sigh. Another scripted, non-playable real-time demo, like Epic released at E3 or whatever, would've been a lot more interesting.
