Following the announcement of Battlefield 2142 by DICE/EA, we've got screenshots of the PC first-person shooter (http://bf1942.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=10914) over at Boomtown.

I wonder if leaving the realistic setting is going to harm the popularity of the series.

Looks pretty good. Anything sporting Mech combat and you can count me in.

Given how much PC gamers hate sci-fi, how could it not?

I was thinking more the crowd that like realistic military shooters might balk at the series going sci-fi. Of course it's bound to pick up sco-fi games fans to make up the numbers.

Hmmmm if Quake Wars comes out around the same time, going on screens alone, without a demo or more media to go on, I'd have to go for Quake Wars.

That being said, Dice has proven they can craft good gameplay. It's their QA that sucks ass.

I dunno, I'm really into my military games, but this looks pretty solid action from the footage, they're trying to do "realistic sci-fi" from the looks of it.

Homeworld, Freespace, Wing Commander, Quake, Independence Wars, Starcraft, Total Annihilation, Mechwarrior,....

I could ramble on and on.

Dumbed down sci-fi like Mechassault, now that sucks.

It looks great, I can't wait for the Xbox 360 version. (Ok, that was an easy shot.)

Deep down I'm still hoping against hope for Freespace 3 to get made someday.

Btw, I forgot mentioning Jet-pack flying Tribes and its Mech cousin Starsiege.

Saying gamers don't want to see their sequels and playing more Rainbow 6 or Operation Flashpoint instead is nuts.

I'm going to say that for me, yes, the sci-fi aspect will hurt it. I'd rather they come up with shitloads of expansions for BF2 than venture into the future.

Infantry vs Mechs? Is there any infantry class besides Anti-Mech? I can see this being an RPG happy game. I'll stick to BF2. I was never down with the sci-fi.

BF2142 is due out Fall of this year. If they continue at their current clip, there should be somewhere around 72,384 BF2 content packs by then, so don't worry.

Looks cool, but if it's coded in COBOL by the work experience kids (a la BF2), I think I'll wait for Quake Wars.

Actually, it's the bugs that are harming the popularity of the series, not the gameplay or setting. BF2 is an amazing game... but the bugs can make it so darn frustrating!

A futuristic online shooter made by the same designers as BF2? Sounds like fun to me. Just don't ship a buggy mess this time!!

Yes, because clearly FEAR was unpopular just last year and the original Tribes is one of the most reviled of all FPS games.

Oh wait.

Sci-fi games are sadly not as popular. Which is to say..

Games that suck that have sci-fi are considered sci-fi. Games that are great that have sci-fi become exalted and are removed from the genre and called something else.

Quake, Half-life, Doom, etc.

Quake Wars or Battlefiend 2142?

Maybe some Risk 2210!

Can I get stealth mods and the "Mother" nuclear device, guaranteed to blow up 1 solider per territory on a continent?

Well considering the Mechwarrior mod for BF2 fell apart, I will be looking forward to this.

As for the change of setting, I don't mind. I mean they done about everyother setting, only thing there missing is WW1 and Napoleonic era warfare and I can't see that as being to intresting.

I don't get if that was a joke or not. Surely Tribes was massively original and has a huge cult following while FEAR was just derivative and poo?

"I wonder if leaving the realistic setting is going to harm the popularity of the series."

Of course it's going to hurt it. Every popular FPS out there is set in this era. I'm not saying it's impossible to make a popular sci-fi FPS, but right now, it's not the mainstream appeal.

I would like to give credit where credit is due though, it was very un-EA of them.

If the execs at EA could keep their eyes off of your wallet, you'd have a stable game.

Infantry vs Mechs?

Infantry Vs Tanks? Infantry Vs Choppers? Not much different IMO. A good tank driver is still a force to be reckoned with and the choppers still tear up everything in BF2, even if they're not quite as tough as they were.

Also, the one thing alot of negative nellies seem to be forgetting is that no one is forcing you to play the game. If you don't want to play yet another sci-fi shooter then just don't buy it. I don't own every Final Fantasy.

Edit: That being said... the maps DO look just like dressed up BF2 maps from what we've seen. If they're doing sci-fi they should atleast do it right. Where's the neon lit monolithic urban sprawl or long since deserted former city surrounded by endless frozen tundra (the trailer mentioned ice...)?

pshh, silly EA.

omg why they already did a modern combat they dont need 2142 how bout making like battlefield medieval or rome or civil war not halo style battlefield.........

Also why do they have to make it fiction battlefield has never done that i want to go back in time why is every game going into the future like ghost recon...

this makes battlefield another plane old game by the time it comese out its gonna be terrible because ghost recon advanced warriors and halo 3 will already be out

Oh man, that comment was halerious(sic). I though i'd just share.

Lol, i can't wait for battlefield: Revolutionary war.

"Spend 10 minutes reloading your stupid fucking musket, only to have it miss because we can't make hitboxes or misfire because your powder was wet cause you wandered through a stream! You're a dumbass!"

Ha, well, i guess i probably shouldn't talk too much smack, given the popularity of that pirates mod for BF1942...it was all my friends played for a long time.
