Battlefield 2142 Announced

The 03/21/2006 update on the official Electronic Arts Battlefield 2 website (http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_032106) has the official announcment of Battlefield 2142, DICE's upcoming Sci Fi tactical combat shooter.

Hi BF fans,

Today we have some really big news to share with you. The more sniper-eyed of you out there will probably already know, but we're currently hard at work developing "Battlefield 2142", which is scheduled for release this Autumn. As you'll have guessed, this is a departure for the BF series as we're going into the future - something that a lot of you wanted to see happen in the BF universe. We're creating a ton of cool features that you won't have seen in any BF before, including cloaking devices, mines that follow you, awesome new rifles, guns and grenades, and of course, MECHS! We're developing this here in DICE Stockholm while the DICE Canada studio will be hard at work on a 1.3 update for Battlefield 2, as well as the Armoured Fury Booster Pack.

There'll be an "official" press release later on this week but we know that you guys need to know first. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on how 2142 is coming along.

They're just going to mine this engine and gameplay as hard as they can, aren't they. You can count me out of this one - BF2 is a lot of fun, but their support of it has disappointed me. I won't get nailed by the same thing with 2142.

Edit: Serves me right for not RTFA. It's mentioned right there that they're in Stockholm. Doh! :o

This looks extremely cool, but I don't know if I want to pay $50 for a game that will likely have more bugs and flaws than Battlefield 2 did at launch.

This is rapidly approaching shovelware.

Time will tell, I guess. Futuristic Battlefield 2 sounds like an absolute blast, but 6 months between major expansions / new releases is getting ridiculous.

Wow, EA is spitting out these BF games just as fast as their FIFA's and NHL's. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. They have covered WWII, Vietnam, present day and now the future. What's next? Medieval warfare, pirates, ninjas or samurais? Boy, I would love some multiplayer pirate action :)
