Gamecloud (http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=4063) is reporting we may get an unveiling of the official Nintendo Revolution name this Thursday during Saturo Iwata's keynote address at the GDC. There is also a rumor we may see a June launch of the console.
Additionally, CVG includes "[another] persistent rumour which has been doing the rounds is that Nintendo may launch the Rev as early as June." Itoh is quoted in BusinessWeek as saying, "There are rumors that the Revolution could be released as early as June. If that happens and Nintendo sells around one million units, Sony could have a harder time catching up."
Interesting, but unlikely. I'm curious to hear what the name is going to be. My guess? Revolution.

June, if they could pull it off, would probably be great for the big N. The sooner the better.

Again, we're all way off in the <a href="http://www.assassinworks.com/poll/">poll</a> versus the announcements.
Now let's guess on how many switcheroos they're going to play until release date.
I work at IBM, but this is just my opinion, nothing based on facts. I have the impression that the Cell will be too much to handle for Sony, while everything nintendo seems to be using is stock components, just like MS.

I think they've been using Revolution too long to change it, but anything's possible.

Nintendo Revolution is a decent name. They just need to steer clear of any name that describes it's shape. Gamecube was a fine name, but a little cheesy. "Hey look, the Gamecube is a...cube...shape."
But I still think Nintendo would be better off releasing the Revolution at the same time as the new Zelda, especially if it's suppose to take advantage of the Rev controller. But it might be better in the long run for them to get a jump on Sony. And with the 360 shortages only now being over (apparently), Nintendo could be in a good position to gain some ground in the market. They just need to release it with some must own games. If they release it in June would they have enough games at launch? I'd hate to see the Rev come out with only 3 games then have to wait till the winter for anything worthwhile. Personally I'm okay with that. I don't play enough games anyway, but your average gamer who tears through a few games a month won't like the wait between games.
Speaking of odd names, I still don't know why the XBOX 360 is called the 360.

Well, MS didn't want the XBox 2 going up against the PlayStation 3. But they couldn't just skip version numbers and call it the XBox 4, so they needed somthing different, the way that Ati and nVidia naming schemes work. They probably got the term "360" by having the dev team come up with a bunch of names, and putting them through a focus group, asking them "Which name says that we're better than the PS3?"

like xbox next? we think they've been using it too long, because all we do all day is follow stories about them (oh, just me, then?), what about the people who you target with that initial product marketing, the stuff that hasn't even started yet...

So this would mean a June launch in Japan? I wonder if Nintendo will jump on the multiple region release bandwagon, though I doubt it.
If it is released in Japan first, there's going to be a very large import market like with the DS lite...

Actually it was Xenon. Some people still refer to it as that, but not many.
As to the Rev, frankly I think they should leave the name alone. Revolution is kinda catchy, if a little arrogant.

Spot on, man. Well said. The GameCube name and shape was lame 5 minutes after it was announced and the novelty of it wore off. I still remember waking up early, before football practice, to read about the new Nintendo system, thinking it was so cool and then ... just a big hunky cube.
If they can get it out the door this summer, well, bully for them. Assuming it did come in under $200, I'd probably snatch one up, too. It'd be great for Zelda: Twilight Princess to act as a 'Cube last hurrah and as a beefy Revolution launch title. Personally, I think it looks as good as anything we're seeing on the 360, so it's not like it won't have that "next-gen" feel.
And the 360 is called the 360 because MS, in its focus-grouped outlook on EVERYTHING, wanted a name that didn't sound inferior to the PS3. Because MS thinks that Joe Sixpack would see Xbox 2 and PS3 on the shelf together and just assume the PS3 was better. So they used 360, because 360 > 3, or so the thinking goes. Yes, it is very stupid.
Personally, I was hoping for neXtBOX or something.

Multiple region releases end up one of two ways. Shortages, or delayed releases. I highly doubt the Big N is willing to fall under fan scrutiny for having console shortages. I doubt they want to trail the PS3 in it's release as well.

Heck, the Japanese haven't even had devkits for that long.

Wow....this thread baaaaloooows.....How did this post even make it on the main page of Evil Avatar??
First of all, the final dev kits are slated for June...And I am talking the SOFTWARE dev kits...not the controller dev kits...As of right now there is no final dev kit to make games...The person who posted this probably took that to mean the the system would be ready in June...WHICH IT WON'T BE.....
Info on the controller dev kit:
http://revolution.ign.com/articles/694/694785p1.html
hahahaha I have a question for you.....Try naming the companies that they got to produce their hardware??? Can't find any?? That is because currently THERE ARE NONE! Nintendo is even further behind than Sony is. Have you seen Nintendo's last dev kit they put out??? It looks like a rediculous piece of crap....They don't have anything finalized yet and they have no manufacturers for their hardware....So how the hell are you going to launch in June???
Btw....here is teh part of the article that Bapenguin left out:
The chances of the console actually launching this early are next to zero, so we wouldn't recommend that readers hold their collective breath. The fact of the matter is that Nintendo won't be releasing final Revolution development hardware until June, which makes a system launch during the same month impossible. Furthermore, numerous development and publishing sources have flat-out told IGN Revolution that a "Thanksgiving week of 2006" launch has been relayed to them from Nintendo.

You are right. When you are MS and you are so out of touch with the gaming community that you need focus-groups for everything you do....that is pretty pathetic......And I dunno why you are so confused about what 360 means....if you watched the marketing videos and E3 videos about the XBox you would know why they chose the name 360....They specifically told us....The 360 means that this console is revolves around the gamer, his lifestyle, and his gaming community....Thus covering all 360 degrees of his gaming and digital lifestyle because of it's ability to apparently "have and do everything any gamer would want or need" For example....Watch movies, listen to music, game online, and everything else that MS THINKS a gamer should have and should need.
Nintendo launch in june.... HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHA....Who believes this crap?

I never even thought about the different regions in regards to the Revolution launch. I highly doubt Nintendo would try a unversal system launch, they are much more conservative/pragmatic than that. I'm as sure as I could be about any speculation regarding two things: 1) Revolution will launch in Japan first the way Nintendo always has. 2) It will launch in the US before or at Thanksgiving. It seems to me that means they have to launch in Japan this summer sometime, maybe August?
