Sony seems to be gauging interest in new PSP functionality as well as the market for a US release of its "Talkman" translator/game hybrid in a new email survey being sent to Playstation Underground members. The first part of the survey asks what ways the participant uses his PSP in regards to music and movies (both downloaded and UMD) as well as WiFi internet usage. (For future firmware updates?) The remainder of the survey focuses on Sony's "Talkman" peripheral exclusively. Here are a couple of the questions:

Here is the concept for potential new PSP software called "Talkman."

Talkman is a software that will transform the PSP into a language translator and education device. It will have an animated character called "Max" to interact with the device. Using a provided microphone and UMD disk, the user will be able to say words and phrases in one language and the PSP will translate those into a different language. Talkman will help you learn new languages and communicate on your trips abroad.

How appealing is the concept of the Talkman software to you? Here are some of the top features that the Talkman software will offer. How appealing is each of the following features to you?

"Game" mode where it will be possible to learn foreign languages using games for listening and correct pronunciation

Use of a wi-fi connection to update word lists, upload comments, and use the PSP as a dictionary

Access to "travel tools" like an alarm, world clock, unit converter, etc.

"Talk" mode which will turn the PSP into a translator that will support travel-related conversation
I for one always liked the concept of this "game" and wondered when if we would see a release. New PSP functions are always welcome as well.

8 new PSP titles this week alone.

20 new games in the last 4 weeks. That ain't bad on any console.

I think the people who would really want Talkman (AKA me) probably figured out by now that you can just import the Japanese version and set English as the default language (which I did). There's no region protection for a change (yay Sony? Didn't think I'd be saying that).

Talkman is a very slick little gizmo and I've had fun practiceing my Japanese with it. It's not really being used like it should unless you travel with it though, and I havn't had the chance yet.

It is on a console that's been around as long as the PSP and Sony seems more interested in producing more movie titles than games. Still too little, but hopefully not too late.

This sounds cool, I have to admit.

It is more than a little frustrating that the PSP wasn't establised as a kick-ass game machine first and foremost. With announcements about email and RSS newsreaders I just have to roll my eyes. There is supposed to be a compelling reason to pick up the PSP, not a bunch of ports, rehashes and a smattering of other unfocused 'features'.

The PSP isn't a game machine, it is a gizmo that happens to play some games. Unfortunately, I have a Treo that is a better gizmo and a DS that plays better games. My PSP goes completely unused.
