Businessweek (http://www.businessweek.com) brings word (http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D8GG8JQOG.htm?campaign_id=apn_home_down&chan=db) that the consumer edition of Microsoft's next Operating System, Windows Vista, has been delayed until 2007. The corporate edition is still on track for a November 2006 release though.

So what are they removing from the business edition for consumer? Domain stuff? Is this like pro vs home xp? I forget with all the damn vista versions.

Ok.. so people will pirate business edition instead of wasting time with consumer?

Uhm, what about the 'ultimate' version? Or is that part of the consumer stuff?

So I guess this means we'll have to wait a bit longer to enrich our lives, experience convergence and have our movies age like fine wine. Prepare your value chains...

That sucks. I was looking forward to using Vista's Media Edition stuff with my 360. I wonder if they will provide any free downloadable component to let me watch movies from my PC. Sony SAYS they will, turning the PS3 into a LocationFree Player. But it is Sony.

i just hope they have a "no crappy shit loaded" edition, i.e. without all the fancy schmancy wannabe mac crap to slow down my gaming. or at least an easy way to turn the crap off.

Really, i'm only excited about the visual stuff, which you can pretty much do with add-on apps and XP.

So we can expect a bug free version somewhere around 2011?

Amen, where is my gamer edition that lets me dual boot between the full OS and a slim and trim version dedicated totally to gaming that runs virtually nothing in terms of services and the like.

Hell, give me the Xbox OS...

I, for one, give a resounding, "Oh well."

I haven't been looking forward to this new OS all that much...so, the longer the wait, the better for me.
I would like a more specific date other than simply 2007; I'm planning on buying a new computer sometime in the very near future, and I'd like to get the most current OS(despite my overall lack of enthusiasm over Vista).

I was gonna get a new PC with Vista... guess I have a few more months to get better hardware :) The wait will be long....

Vista is shaping up to be a load of bullshit.

Vista Starter will allow only three applications (and/or three windows) to run simultaneously, will provide Internet connectivity but not incoming network communications, and will not provide for logon passwords or Fast User Switching (FUS).

So the most affordable version of Vista say's a big "fuck you" to multi tasking?

Yes, I realize it is the "Starter" version, intended for those with less experience working with computers or an operating system. But how many of us can afford to drop $100+ for a simple operating system? The ONLY reason (and we all know this) that most of us upgrade our OS is cause most applications and games require Windows or work best under it.

So if I want to use Notepad, Internet Explorer, mIRC and something else extremely simple such as Calculator or Wordpad, I can't because "Starter", the most economically viable option, limits me to 3 applications?

Fuck, Microsoft.

(yes, this is the first time I've heard of this, I havent kept up with Vista really)

Well I was thinking of waiting for Vista, but you know what...Screw that! I should be getting a nice fat check for my Tax refund (bigger then norm for me,still not that big, altho I didnt owe NY this year)....that will go a long way to paying for a new pc NOW, not in one year. I can only wait to play Oblivion so long!

I'm still on Windows 2000, and I have no plans to switch.

Next gen games? Revolution here I come.

Then you would also know that vista starter is not made for your consumption. If you aren't in a developing nation you won't see it. Vista Basic (the equivalent of xp home) will be the most basic thing you can get.

That is equally as dumb. granted I wouldn't buy Vista "Starter" due to the limitations, but offering a much cheaper version to certain countries and not America is fucking stupid.

If I knew how to use Linux I'd be running Redhat or Ubuntu

Here's (http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/) a start, there are plenty of resources on the internet.

Oh I know there's all kinds of resources and beginner guides to Linux.

I should be more specific, if I had a second PC where I could test Linux without the risk of fucking up my main PC then I would. But given how little I know of it, I'm not going to install it on my current HDD, nor even attempt to dual boot it (bad experiences in the past dual booting 98se and XP).

Basically that boils down to, if i could afford a second pc to learn Linux on then I could easily afford the "normal" version of Vista, so neither is really an option.
