MTV Games sends along word that the dubiously titled Green Day Rock Band will be launching June 8th.
Multi-platinum selling and Grammy Award winning group Green Day, along with Harmonix, the leading developer of music-based games, MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks, and Reprise / Warner Bros. Records today announced that Green Day: Rock Band, the full standalone music video game experience that celebrates Green Day’s historic career and genre-defining albums will launch worldwide June 8, 2010, for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Wii system from Nintendo.
Green Day: Rock Band allows players to step onto the stage and into the shoes of Green Day, the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band that jump-started the punk-pop revival and has continued to pave the way for American rock music into the 21st century. Taking on the likenesses of Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, players progress through the story and history of Green Day, gaining access into the band’s media vault, where they can unlock more than 100 collectible images, and more than 40 minutes of rare and unreleased video from interviews, outtakes and performances.
Featuring the three-part vocal harmony technology Harmonix introduced with the award-winning The Beatles: Rock Band, Green Day: Rock Band gives players access to an incredible setlist of 47 tracks that span the band’s career including “Brain Stew,” “Jaded,” “Hitchin’ a Ride,” “American Idiot,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”All 47 tracks are fully exportable, providing players with the opportunity to play the songs in Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and the recently announced Rock Band 3! In addition, the six Green Day tracks already available in the Rock Band Music Store as downloadable content can be played in Green Day: Rock Band with added vocal harmonies, unique performance visuals, and exclusive archival material.
I have never heard of any of these songs. With all the great new artists out there, this was a piss-poor choice for new content.

I love Rock Band. I own 1, 2 and Beatles and fully intend to buy 3 when it comes out.
With that said, fuck this game.

That's because you weren't into them in the late 80's / early 90s... or probably ever. Green Day has been around forever, are competent musicians, and I have no problem with them having their own music game.
I won't buy it, but I don't have a problem with it.

I own 1, 2, Beatles, AC/DC and over $100 in DLC and I still say Fuck this game.
Hell, I own almost every Guitar Hero title. I'm basically their target consumer since I'll buy about anything for my little plastic guitar and I still say Fuck this game.

May be worth a rental and the $5 export (assuming the price stays there). My 20GB is hurting already, though.

You can't do that unless you are the first person to try it, since the export is tied to the CD Key in the manual.

Man, I like Green Day. I'm not on the latest albums, but the old ones are amazing.
I will probably buy it to play with a friend that have one Wii.
I played the Beatles one, and what amazing game.

I think Green Day summed this game up best themselves.

You've....never heard ANY of those songs? Really? Aside from all of them being played to death (when they were each released) by the radio, several of those were in the soundtracks for movies, on TV commercials, etc.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams alone won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 2006. And was #1 on the Billboard Rock list for 16 weeks straight. And you've never heard of any of these? Do you have a pulse?
I understand not everyone is a fan of Green Day. Just like I had zero interest in Van Halen and Metallica. But I think some of you are really going out of your way to hate on this game, just because it's not your cup of tea. Green Day's been around for over 20 years now, and they have a lot of fans out there.
Including me. Day 1 purchase for sure.

Sorry to say, even though I have never played a music game in my life, I completley agree with Valkryist, Green Day has been a foothold in the Punk scene for quite a while now and they continue to make great music. Not slammin you here, but some of us felt the same way about The Aerosmith or Van Halen games. Music is completley different for people just like food is...I hate Avacados but my GF loves them, it is a matter of personal choice.

You know what? This is an attempt to include modern rock artists in the Rock Band phenomena, instead of just bands that reached their peak in the 1960s-1980s. In that respect, Green Day is a pretty awesome choice. Who would you rather see? Nickelback? There's a lot of real douchebag groups out there right now, and a lot of the modern rock bands that don't suck would make for lousy gameplay. Green Day is at least halfway decent, and the game will probably play well.

Now I've been a Green Day fan for 20 years. Seen them live a number of times. However I'm not that bothered about this game. For me it's more to do with music game overload rather than not being a fan.
I've got the AC/DC, Metallica and Beatles ones but don't play them that often or if I do I pop them in play one song and then play something else. When we get beered up and play we always find the variation ones more fun.
Also peaked in the 1960-1980 only? The only band that applies to in the standalone ones is the Beatles. If you look at the track lists for RBs and GHs there is about 1/3 the tracks from 2000+ 1/3 from 80s - 2000 and rest from pre 80s. So that's rubbish.

I guess this is not the game for you then.
Pretty good choice in general, however. GD has worked some bizarre magic that's enabled it to maintain its original slew of early 90s fans while simultaneously serving as the punk* poster child for a whole new generation. Good stylistic variation across their career.
*Note: Not actually punk. Punk died in the 70s.

Fan of Green Day, fan of Rock Band. Not a fan of this game - seems more like brand dilution than expansion. I like the fact that the songs are exportable, but since we know that harmonies won't work with RB2, and expect they will with RB3, I certainly hope we don't have to pay twice to export.
So while I should be the perfect target audience for this game I think it's a bad move by EA, Mtv, and Harmonix.

Im interested in this one. I saw Green Day live once and they went from just a decent band to an awesome one. Id see them again if they came around here on tour and some of the songs on that list are my favorites. Definitely looking forward to "holiday" too!

Not a fan of Green Day on the whole, but loved the American Idiot album (except the horrible title track).
That being said, this needs to have Jesus of Suburbia on it. NEED.

If I'm progressing through the history of Green Day, then I basically only want to play the first 35% of the game.
Kerplunk, Dookie and Nimrod, then uh, more Darksiders?

RB1 was not tied to the disc. I purchased the download code from the PSN store and downloaded the songs. I later sold my RB1 and then my hard drive crashed.
I got a copy of RB1 from Gamefly, used my export code that I previously purchased, and songs were back.
Are the Beatles songs linked to a code in the manual?

Man Jesus of Suburbia is a great song, but I don't know if my hands could take 9 minutes of it. Tho there are a few slow spots in it to recoup. Thanks for reminding me of it, listening now. :)

I am a fan and am definitely getting this, but FORTY-SEVEN songs!? 53 counting the existing DLC! They only have eight albums, so that means we're most likely getting more than half of all of the songs they have ever written? Does that seem like a lot to anyone else?
Should Green Day Rock Band really have more songs than The Beatles Rock Band?

Actually, I think that number is low, particularly for what will likely be a full priced game - like Beatles: Rock Band, rather than an expansion disk like AC/DC. 47 songs on disk is pretty low for a music game these days.
Also Green Day's early songs were pretty short, and their albums typically had 13+ tracks on them. Dookie clocked in at 37 minutes IIRC with 14 tracks.
I'd like to see several songs from Kerplunk and 1039/Smooth. "2000 Light Years Away" and "Goingto Pasalaqua" are favs of mine.
They have 8 full length albums/EP compilations and well over 100 songs I'd imagine. I'm sure there will be several favorites of mine that are excluded.
Will likely pick this up once it hits the bargain bin - since the export will likely be a one time use code. Oh well. Hopefully all of the RB1 & 2 DLC will import into RB3 along with this. Wish the Beatles would too, swapping disks is annoying, but I can understand the reasoning behind keeping the branding for that game consistent. Happy GD:RB isn't doing the same.

I love it when people actually prove the point they're trying to argue against and still think they've made their case. Especially when all of it is pure opinion to begin with.

How the hell has Evil never heard a single Green Day song? How the heck is that possible? Does he live in a cave with no radio or TV reception? Granted I wasn't a huge fan until the American Idiot album, but since then, they have been, in my opinion, the best light punk band on the planet.
What strikes me as odd is that given what I can surmise of our dear host's character, he would love Green Day's output since American Idiot.

Ah so you mean 1960 -1989. So 1990 - 2010 only gives 20 years and your complaint is that there are more songs from a longer period of time.......
You're still wrong overall though.
Aerosmith Get a Grip 1993. Great album
Van Halen's peak depends on if you prefer David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar
Of course Metallica never did anything after 1989. Maybe you should look at Metallica's album sales and chart positions alone after 1991 and I suppose they did only spend all of the 90s doing world wide sell-out tours. See the news today? Apparently they are still quite popular.
Still right on The Beatles though.

Green Day are pretty cool, but do they have a type of music thats suited to rock band/guitar hero? Granted I have only heard their mainstream stuff that gets played a billion times a day on the radio for a month or two after release, but it doesnt seem like something that would usually appeal to that sort of audience.
Then again, I probably dont know jack.

Dude, Lady freaking Gaga is in Rock Band now. You should be asking how the hell is that suited with no guitars whatsoever. I might download a track just to see how they did it.

I would pony up cash in an instant for a full album DLC of DOOKIE.
After that, there are only a few tracks here and there that I like from them. That being said, I hope it does well just so they keep on looking for new band centric RB spin offs to do.

Aww, come on... I didn't care for Green Day's music too much UNTIL they became "pop punk sellouts"! I love the emo pop punk movement.... Green Day and My Chemical Romance are about the only good things about modern "commercial" music. I hate all the rest of it, and listen only to underground artists. But Green Day and My Chemical Romance... yum!
