A video has surfaced on youtube of what will presumably be the intro movie for the upcoming Battlefield 2142 from EA and DICE (who really are part of EA now anyway). Check the video out here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-DnK-d_sp0).

Fall 2006? BF2 barely came out a few months ago. It better be an expansion pack.
Oh who am I kidding? They're milking the franchise.

I would say this is meant to compete against Quake Enemy Territory. It looks damn good and I'm happy with the mechs!

with all the different things going on i hope they balance things good...
for some reason BF2 was different, but still felt "familiar" enough to ease into then fall in love with. i would rather this game "feel" like the others, only with a futuristic twist. I'm not a fan of cloaking either...

I'm a fan of cloaking - if they could balance it right - but I can't see how they would.

This looks terrible..... there's nothing neat or interesting about it. If it was April 1st, I would understand. Look at the tech...i hope I'm right and it's just a mod someone built.

Wow, who knew Dice had such storytelling talent? That was awesome!
But why does the screen tell me "Fall 2006," and not Fall "when it's done?" It'd be nice of them to give the game some, um, development time. 1 year is not enough time to make a good game. It's only enough time to make a future-themed Battlefield 2.

This game must be based on Battlefield 2 tech, and as such has should look decent if not amazing. I mean, it's only a year from BF2, they apparently won't have time to do much to the engine.

It would be nice if it were a mod; I wouldn't put it past PC Gamer to promote a mod, seeing as they have a history of supporting them.

you are forgetting that if it's released in Fall of '06, that means that it'll be another 6-9 months before it's actually worth buying. You know... after the 12-14 y/o PUNKS have helped DICE work out the bugs.

As long as there are meat rifles, I'll be happy. Otherwise, this game will be hot sick ass.
I'm going to have to throw my vote in with the "it looks like a mod" group. If they're going to make a whole new game, at least make it different enough graphically and/or artistically.
If you're just adding crazy looking space vehicles, just make it Battlefield 2: Fast Forward A Hundred or So Years

Yeah, I'm thinking that has a lot to do with it =) To those of us who have played through 1942, Vietnam and BF:2, this sort of looks like how the desert combat mod was for 1942.

I'm not touching it. I've had a nice tall pitcher of the BF2 Kool-aid (got the SF expansion and purchased the EF booster pack), but it is blatantly obvious that EA/DICE is hip-deep in monkeys masquerading as software engineers. There's no other explanation for the complete and utter goat-rope that every patch brings. The incompetence behind the post-release support of their current game makes the Sierra/Dynamix handling of Tribes 2 look like the Apollo program.
I'll let everybody else be the guinea pigs this time, thanks very much.

That video represents the best use of mechs and foot soldiers combined into one game. Quake Wars has mechs and foot soldiers but every time I see videos, the mechs always look very sloppy.
I have to say this game has me interested. Then again anything battlefield, (or for that matter vehicle oriented FPS + multiplayer) has me interested. I've got no problem with them using the battlefield 2 engine. Its still decent graphics, even though it is a resource hog.

Looks promising. The kewl thing is you won't have the 'realism' folks crying that so and so weapon/vehicle isn't like it's real-life counterpart. They should be able to better balance the game too cause they make up whatever the hell weapon or vehicle they want to make up.

Word to this my brother from up high. You are an angel and bring words of truth to us.
Realism in DICE games is a ploy by communists to convert our youths from porn and rifles to wearing red pajama bottoms and building snow rocket ships to launch the new revolution. A new commie revolution of posts containing scientific facts that jumping and shooting rifles is inaccurate and unfair to those who sit prone two feet away in a highly realistic adaptation of modern warfare. Be careful, for if you ever disagree with them, you will be called a dolphin diver. Which I think means you like dead male goats.
I no longer have any clue what I was typing, but in conclusion I agreed with you at some point.

I remember when this intro was for a series of games called Mechwarrior.
Seriously, show some fucking creativity, make some different looking robots. I'm not talking super original even, just something that doesn't look like it should have 'Inner Sphere' or 'Ghostbear Clan' decals on it.
I saw absolutely nothing that made it seem unique, creative, or even remotely interesting. Color me unimpressed unless they release movies/screens/info that show how it's going to differentiate itself from Mechwarrior/Tribes/Unreal Tournament.

The basic story though is from the Day After Tomorrow, just with a cooler ending because everyone starts fighting for land :D
Plus even though I agree with what someone else said earlier regarding Quake Wars mechs being sloppy I do prefer the overall look of Quake Wars.

Change the map and textures and it looks a lot like the Star Wars mod that was released for BF1942.

The main reson I think it might be a mod is because the soldier models and animations looks a lot like the ones from BF2 (which I don't own, so I'm going from memory).

Yeah, while paying for a dev quality mod doesn't bother me much, gameplay improvements > mechs.
What a POS...this simply looks like a mech BF2 mod. Same exact gameplay, engine, with new 'vehicles' and kits (invisibility, big whoop). Now that EA has fully scooped up DICE into their clutches I guess we can only expect the quality of their shipping code to further nosedive. I'm keeping my money in my wallet thanks.
The concept looks cool but I'm sure the execution will be faulty.

Does nobody remember Battlefield Vietnam? It was essentially a polished mod for BF1942. I imagine this is the same situation with BF2. I personally am tired as hell of real world combat, be it WWII or modern day Counter-Terrorism. I'll be snagging this and Quake Wars for sure.

Ice coming down from the poles and driving humanity to the tropics? How about some realism EA? Everyone with a brain (ie not George Bush) knows that global warming is going to melt the ice caps and flood large swathes of land all across the globe, driving the survivors into the middle of the continents.
As for the part about everyone killing each other in a huge global crisis, that's pretty spot on. You thought the oil wars were bad - wait until there's little clean water or the ice caps have melted. The compassionate people will be run over by the Jesus freaks and other nuts who will bring ideas like "patriotism" and nationalism to a whole new level of depravity. I weep for the future.
Oh wait, was I supposed to not take this shit seriously? My bad...

Though I don't think it looks nearly as bad as that, I think the concept is pretty lame at best. All they did was take Battlefield and throw it into a generic future with some mechs and weird guns. I'm just pretty skeptical at something like this that really lacks any creativity, minus some nice looking tracked vehicles.
More importantly, this makes me think about something more important. When the fuck are you going to make a new Battletech-universe game for PC Microsoft? I want a giant turn based strategy game!

Well, at their swedish site dice.se (http://www.dice.se) they have the official announcement up. It's aimed for a fall 2006 release (which means they have a real high tempo in my opinion) and it's based on the same technical platform as Battlefield 2.

Probably never. I'm willing to bet that we'll see nothing but Mech Assault from here on out. It's too bad too, as the Mech Warrior series and it's ilk were so much better.

I don't really understand why people are so excited about Quake Wars. The last two games using id properties - Quake IV and Doom 3 - were pretty bland at best. I'd think that people would be really cautious about anything in those universes.

licensing issues would be my bet, they don't have a full contract on US distribution. Take the Earth 21X0 series those games had be finished and distributed months before they had someone to distribute it.

I've been a Quake fan for a long time. While not a fanboy (I wasn't as big a fan of 2 as I was 1), I generally buy from the series.
I hated Doom 3. It was one of two games I ever returned (Deus Ex Invisible War was the other). I didn't, however, hate Quake 4. Quake 4 brought me back to the old days of gaming - fighting more than one miniboss at once, circle-strafing the Makron, corridor strafe-jumping, etc. It didn't change my life forever, but it wasn't as disappointing as Call of Duty 2. I never once, in Quake 4, had an autosave game that started me dead.
I am looking forward to Quake Wars. The universe has a lot of neat ideas, and is always at least moderately well done.
Battlefield, however, is almost always a great idea followed by terrible follow-through. Quake (2 and 4) didn't have a great story, but "ice, contrary to the melting we know it's all doing... is growing!" seems really half-assed. And come on.. if that isn't Battlefield 2 - With Mechs! I don't know what is.

Personally I'd like to play it, but on the other hand, it really pisses me off. Now I know why the Mech Tactical Simulation team had such a god damned hard fucking time getting any cooperation from EA/Dice on their Mod (Basically exactly this but with actual Battletech mechs). That was just shitty. So MTS finally folded, though now, as I've researched this real fast, they are evidently moving MTS to the Quake Wars engine, so all is not lost.

Actually, one of the current theories is that melt from global warming will cause too much freshwater to melt off in the northern hemisphere - which will cause the north atlantic current to stall out. Without the current hauling all the warm water up there, ice will start reforming and we may get a huge amount of ice in the northern hemisphere - not sure what the theory says about southern hemishpere.

Every so often I fire up the first quake for a good old-school romp. Solid, damn fun game.
Quake Wars has some really interisting concepts behind it from what I read in GI, I liked the idea of the game putting the player in a situation that best suited his abalities. But - that could also be a bad thing if it works how I think it might...(people hacking and then doing whatever they please...ect.)
But- what anakin876 says is true, that is one of the working theories, and If it turns out to be true...it would be dreadful.
