The online reviews of The Godfather are starting to pop up.

Xbox.IGN: 7.9 out of 10 (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/696/696740p1.html)

Since the "urban mayhem" genre is finally filling out and I have played just about every single game in it, I can honestly say that the Godfather doesn't suck. On the contrary, much of it is impressive...Final analysis? It's a good game, but many of its strengths are bogged down by obvious flaws.
USAToday.com: 6.5 out 10 (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2006-03-19-godfather_x.htm)

Ultimately, EA combines the worlds of two icons in the film and gaming genre to create a bland, agitating shooter.
Xbox Advanced: 8.3/10 (http://xbox.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=6730)

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons here, and this is a game that any Godfather, GTA, or hardcore gamer should check out.
GamePro: 4.5/5 (http://gamepro.com/microsoft/xbox/games/reviews/52738.shtml)

... The Godfather does something that licensed video games have tried and failed to accomplish in the past - give gamers a good time and an experience worthy of the film it's emulating.
Thanks to the_dude for the additional scores.

Oh, also, any reviewer that doesn't direct their readers to immediately purchase Mafia is savagely betraying their craft.

Using USA today as a review source? It's like looking for a masseuse in a gay bar.

Analogies have officially hit rock bottom. I'll be going, now.

It was a last minute addition, no other online reviews have popped up yet.

Wait, Kel, I don't follow this analogy. Using USA Today as a review source is like asking to be bent over? Oh. Okay, yeah, I guess this is true.

I'd say using USA Today as a review source is more like looking for sports scores in a powerpoint presentation. You won't find anything useful. However, you will see lots and lots of bar graphs and pie charts.

I was kidding, Everlost. I know, I looked at GameRankings and saw the review, too. Just pulling your pud on that one.

Fuckin eh! Mafia is one of the greatest games ever made. If anyone here wants to play a period mafia game, forget the Godfather - buy Mafia. The game is brilliant from start to finish, save for one lone sequence.

I knew they wouldnt do me justice!!

In all seriousness the GodFather is legendary, to do a game based off of one of the best movies of all time is strike one. The would have to match perfection with perfection. How often does that happen?

I completely disagree with the review. This game ####ing rocks. I may postpone picking up Oblivion on Tuesday in favor of playing some more Godfather. It is similar to the GTA and other clones since you have a lot of freewill to do pretty much whatever you want to do. I like it better than the GTA series though. The fighting engine is fun (spend 15 minutes with it to get used to it), performing an execution is fun, robbing a bank is fun (it took me about 15 minutes to fight my way out of one bank this morning), going out on a hit is fun, and the story is excellent. I have not finished a GTA game since III, I can see myself finishing this one. I am not saying the game deserves a 9.5 but I could see it being in the low-mid 8's.

Actually USA Today gave it a 6.5, not a 6.9. And while the review was kinda blandly written, you'd think a review from a non-gaming newspaper or magazine would be less likely to be bribed or influenced than a source that is dependent on game companies for advertisements and previews.

This in all sense is blasphomy, playing anything over Oblivion is not allowed! Even GOD plays Oblivion.

I was in the camp of skeptics at the announcing of this title. I had never seen the film and was not the biggest EA fan. However, after playing this game I must say I’ve come away impressed. It has its flaws: inconsistent AI, lack of fast transit, and lack of in-game character customization, but at the core this is a very good game. The license is used beautifully. I’ll go as far as to say that this is the best implementation of a movie license to date. The gameplay is solid and the content and replay is huge. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons here, and this is a game that any Godfather, GTA, or hardcore gamer should check out.

An Offer You Can't Refuse
While fanboys will more than likely decry The Godfather's strong resemblance to Grand Theft Auto, the game offers up some pretty unique and enjoyable moments, especially if you're fan of the movie. Whether through it's trademark music or unique take on the film's plot, The Godfather does something that licensed video games have tried and failed to accomplish in the past - give gamers a good time and an experience worthy of the film it's emulating.

GameSpot Review
8.1
The Good: The game makes great use of the film license; plenty of challenging, multitiered missions to keep you busy; fun combat and interrogation system; you can explore a great-looking, expansive map of 1940s new york, with no load times; good music.
The Bad: Heavily recycled character and vehicle models, as well as building interiors ; occasionally glitchy and stupid artificial intelligence; unstable frame rate.

Are we going for a two for two with Oblivion? Or am I trying to poke a fanboy with a stick?

Uh, those are entirely different words. The major sites are saying nothing of the sort. It's good, not great.

It's a nice surprise to see the reviews are mostly positive. I'll pick it up when the price drops a bit. You got to love open-ended mob games. I loved Mafia.

If I were a reviewer I would give it an 85/100. It is surprisingly good. I thought it was going to be complete garbage, but I am really impressed. I have a few complaints which I think many people will share.
1. The controls (on PC) take some getting used to. Once you get used to them they still dont feel natural. My main complaint here is there isn't any strafe.
2. The interiors of some of the businesses you extort are not varied at all. I would say there are 4-5 different interiors for businesses. This isn't a huge deal, it is something you notice, but it isn't something that bugs me.
3. Loading old save games is too much of a hassle.

However, there is also a lot of good things that can be said about this game. The character customizer at the start of the game is amazing. I played around with it for quite a while before settling on what I wanted my guy to look like. My friends have also done this. My character looks like the main character, Tommy, from the game Mafia. A friend of mine made a character that looks EXACTLY like Jack Baeur, then he made a new one that looked exactly like Bruce Willis.

The missions are really cool. You get to take part in the movie. In almost all of the areas of the movie where you might think, "I wonder why this happened" or "I wonder how blank" are answered by your character doing them.

Extorting businesses is fun! I like breaking the person to get the maximum amount of cash per week from them. Beating up defenseless people IS A BLAST!

The hand to hand fighting system is very cool. You can do all sorts of fun things to people. For instance, I was trying to take over this bakery and the guy who ran the bakery was giving me too much lip. So, I threw him into his oven and burned him alive!

There are lots of cool kill animations. My personal favorite killing animation is when I run up to the guy and shoot him in his stomach, when he bends over in pain my guy puts a bullet through the back of his skull.

In my opinion this is definitely a game to give a try. It is very fun! It is a shame that I am picking up Oblivion and only had three days to play The Godfather. I will give it another whirl after I beat Oblivion though.

See, this may not be the hottest...but I'm willing to bet the 360 version is going to kick some ass. Or at least I hope so. EA has had a pretty strong showing on the 360 so far between Fight Night and Burnout. If this is mediocre, I'm not touching anything till the 360 version comes out.

How can this reviewer, having never seen the film, say "license is used beautifully" and "this is the best implementation of a movie license to date"?! What kind of bogus review is this?

It sounds like EA is completely raping another movie license.

Here's the EA Formula: Find a movie, character, sport, etc that people seem to like. Slap it on another game engine or build a crappy game around it. Make sure it looks sounds like the original movie, character or sport. Don't worry about the game. Wash, Rinse, Repeat, Profit!
Here's what Francis Ford Copla, the man primarily responsible for The Godfather, had to say about the game...

They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea. They use the characters everyone knows, and then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other. I had absolutely nothing to do with the game, and I disapprove. (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6121958.html)Now that EA has run out of current movies and comic book characters to rape, they have to go back in time to grab licenses for things that people love. Enter Godfather, and From Russia With Love. Soon, we'll be seeing Phantom of the Opera or Charlie Chaplin turned into GTA clones.

"Experience Charlie Chaplin like you've never experienced him before, NOW WITH SOUND!"

EA isn't getting a dime out of me for exploitation like this.

I'm a huge fan of the novel and the film series, and this game seems to be a decent game trying to score with the franchise and the current popularity of the "gangster" genre of games. There is a Scarface game coming out too, wonder if they'll have a coke sniffing mini-game?

I probably rent the The Godfather game anyway, if not just to see the rendering of Brando's oddly shaped head.
