Take Two has decided to push Red Dead Redemption back a few weeks, into the third quarter, because they believe it is the "optimal time frame to release what is being hailed as the next generation of sandbox games."

The delay, which was revealed today as Take-Two Interactive announced their quarterly financials, has the North American release of Red Dead Redemption set to May 18th. The new date puts the North American version in line with the European release, which remains unchanged at May 21st.

During the Take-Two conference call, the company's president and CEO Ben Feder explained the reasoning behind the shift.

"We shifted the launch of the game by several weeks into the third quarter. We believe this is the optimal time frame to release what is being hailed as the next generation of sandbox games."

Is something else coming out around that time that it's competing with? Hope this isn't a sign of development issues, though I do want this to be as polished as polished can be when it releases.

No worries--let them delay for a quarter or even until Christmas if it improves the quality of the game significantly. It's not like I'm hurting for anything to play until then. <looks over at games shelf, which includes no less than 4 unopened 360 games from Christmas>

It's not like another few weeks of unpaid crunch time can destroy employee morale any further right?

Is anyone else getting the impression that video game development is the 21st century's coal mines?

Which of course makes coal mining the 21st century's video game development, according to the reflexive property of facts... so hell ya, I'm going to be a miner!

Well a bit of a relief there.

Given the upcoming Bad Company 2, God Of War III, Super Street Fighter IV, C&C4, etc, pushing it to May may be a blessing to my wallet.
