TheUnknownSoldier spotted this (http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?story=HGNJedi631sucks&p=6438173) news snippet and immediately brought it to my attention.

OK, so we often literally don't have any news to update you with. That's just the harsh reality of working on a game, and to the same extent, a "secret project." But today, we actually have something sort of useful.

Presenting the Halo Graphic Novel, which from now on shall be known as the HGN. If you're a Halo fiction fan AND a comic book fan, then this might just be the mother lode. Before we get into the how and the why, let's give you a breakdown of the what.

The HGN is a 128 page, full color, high quality hardcover graphic novel, featuring an anthology of original stories, including one big story, and three shorter tales. Side stories, if you will. It should be available in July, 2006.

Now this thing was a Bungie-produced, conceived and nurtured book, but we don't make comic books, we make games. So it only made sense that we went after our favorite comic book artists and writers. And we're not kidding when we tell you that we basically secured, exactly, our first choice picks to paint, draw, letter and write this incredible book.

I liked them...i think they added a lot to the games. There is one that actually tells the story of how the Master Cheif became who he is from like his childhood. Forgot which one it was thou.

The first and last halo book are supposed to be ok. The middle one is Halo : The Game : The Book.

The list of talent looks good, and I find the Halo setting to be cool. Wonder if there will be more covenant backstory.

Should be good.

Edit: "- Legendary artist Moebius takes an intriguing look at the bright lights and big city of a pre-invasion New Mombasa and does so with typical Moebius flair and imagination."

Oh wait, artist of the Panzer Dragoon series is onboard. Everyone owned.

The fall of Reach is worth reading if you are interested in the Halo universe. The other two, well, I guess I don't really have a valid opinion as I never finished either of them, but I almost never put a book down before finishing it.

I think Halo is ok(really liked the first one), but really like graphic novels and comics, so I am mildly interested.

Yeah. They weren't works of art, but they were fun reads. Definitely worth it if your even the least bit into Halo.

"Halo" will move enough copies alone so Im sure they dont truly care about the quality of the content. Also its not a book so most of the Halo fans who cant read will buy it.

If your only contributions are inane verbalizations of your kneejerk response and unsubstantiated statements about the literacy of Halo players (dubious, considering that you've no talent for grammar yourself), please get the fuck out of this thread.

On topic: that cover is amazing. I love the style of "Last Voyage" and "Breaking Quarantine," but "Armor Testing" looks a little... unfinished? In the second panel, the surface of the Spartan armor looks very flat and poorly shaded, while the contours look weak, blobby and imprecise -- not nearly as crisp as the fourth panel, or as "Second Sunrise." I checked the websites of the guys who did pencils and color for "Armor Testing," and both are clearly excellent artists. Maybe that panel is still very much a W.I.P.?

Id love a troll tag, how about a whiney fanboy tag as well?

First post was a bit trollish, second was pretty much fact followed by a slight jab at the fan base. Im guessing you have never been on Live?

Im so so so so so sorry I dont treat each forum post as a full length essay that my life depends on. :( :( :( :( :(

Halo is getting seriously overexposed.

I was a huge fan of the first game, but now i'm pretty luke warm to the whole concept due partially to overexposure and partially to how ill concieved Halo 2 was in the sense of continuing to create a Halo Universe for which to make all these extended spin off properties.

The first one was good stuff. The second (which was retelling the game itself) was utter crap. The third I haven't gotten to yet. They each have different authors.

I did get a chuckle at:

"These are our story artists and writers, in no particular order."

Then they go to list them in alphabetical order. ;)

Pose? Motherfucking POSE? If you're going to go to the trouble of posting some homophobic pish, at least check your spelling. Unless you really did like the 'pose' and your attack is a way to deflect people from realizing that you are, in fact, gay as a summer's day.

FYI the first and third are by the same author, Eric Nylund. They were both excellent. But I can understand how someone who isn't into halo wouldn't get as into them. The backstory they highlight is very interesting though.

As for the second book, I'd agree with most here. *yawn* It wasn't that exciting. The most interesting part, I thought, was how you got to read from the Covenant's perspective. That did add a little bit of freshness to it. But other than that, it was basically the game.

Jean Giraud (Moebius) is a HUGE name. I told my friends about this and they were very excited. Of course, They remember his graphic novels in the 80s, I don't know what sort of work he's done lately. Of course, if you've seen the Absys and Alien, you've seen some of his work too.

If you like the Halo story, I'd go ahead and read all three.
Seriously, skip the second one. William C. Dietz is a decent author, in and of himself, but the Halo novelization was a litany of, "Master Chief went around the corner and killed a Jackal. Then he went around another corner and killed a Grunt. After that, he went into a room and killed an Elite." Repeat for a novel's length of words, and you've about read the book. The only interesting thing I remember from it was pointing out that Hunters always come in pairs, and explaining that as them being pair-bonded brothers.

The two by Nylund are fun if you enjoy the Haloverse, but I wouldn't exactly say they were well-written.

Wyrm

I think Eric Nylund is actually a pretty decent writer, though it has been a while since I read either novel. I'm an avid reader, and a writer myself, and I thought he did a decent job with it.

As far as literary circles are concerned, it wont win any awards, but the story is there, it's everything you've ever wanted to know about the Chief and the story of how he gets to be where he is in the games, which I found, make the games that much more interesting.

What, are you kidding? Fall of Reach and First Strike are absolutely incredible pieces of literature. Anyone who hasn't read them cannot call themselves a HALO fan and should die.

Spider-Man vs. Master Chief crossover coming soon.

Either you're insane or gravely misinformed. I'm well aware that art is subjective, but, on the whole, you'll find that people consider the artists involved in this project are at the least greatly talented, at the most legendary.

"LoL" indeed.

I'll say it again. Moebius, father of Panzer Dragoon's art and chracter designs and one of the most influential artists of the CENTURY, is doing a story. I don't know if everyone here is just oblivious or what, but his track record pretty much makes him one of the most impossible artists to secure. Other than the Moebius Strip, and his own select side projects, the guy simply does his own thing.

Like many, I consider him the James Cameron of comics and art, far surpassing Frank Miller, Stan Lee and anyone else you wanna throw out there.

He is a true visionary of art design and his involement with something like this is unprecedented.

Don't forget he did the design for the Fifth Element. One of the better parts of the movie.

I'm impressed by the choices. I didn't realize Bungie was so fond of 2000AD and French comics, though I guess the pop-SF aspects should have made it a little more obvious. Still, I might pick this up even being apathetic to Halo.

Also, Eric Nylund is a pretty good author. I haven't read his Halo books, but his Signal to Noise is one of the better SF books of the last few years.

Whoever drew this is as legendary as my nutsack.

It's also clear that Moebius was wasted when he drew this. Here's Moebius when he is actually trying:

You're obviously skilled in the art of google, Megalith.

Clever ball sack related jokes aside, whether or not he is wasted on the project from one page of unfinished preview art is irrelevant. The man is indeed a legend, whether or not you believe it to be so.

The term graphic novel is so annoying...

A novel is a novel.

A comic book is a comic book.

Why try to rename it to sound somehow more sophisticated or "for adults"? It's a damn comic book...
