Sony's latest update (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/) for their global PS3 issue? If you happen to own a PS3 older than one of them there diet versions (the slims) they're actually recommending that you don't even use it until they have fixed the problem.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

That's some great advice. I turned mine on this morning to see if I had the same issue. I didn't.

It's rare that I consider being away on business a positive thing for my gaming habits. Now the real challenge - keeping my 14-yr old son from firing up the unit today.

I didn't get any update thankfully Im not connected to the inter net just yet. But I did buy Heavy rain and updated through the disk. Not sure if this update has any issues or not. The problem I currently have with Heavy rain is the title screen's Resolution isn't auto updating for my TV or system. It makes it hard to see any of the menu options.

Thanks to the previous news posted here i checked into the PSN website and found this news as well. I've unplugged the PS3 just in case my wife decides to turn on a Netflix movie...i certainly hope this gets resolved soon!

I really hope just turning it on doesn't ruin anything. Thankfully I backup all my saves to a memory card just in case some of the data is corrupt after the fix is issued.

I turned mine on last night to watch a couple of movies and was curious as to why it was not connecting to the intrawebs. I did however notice that my Batman: Dark Knight theme had turned into corrupted data. Wonder what else is fucked on it.

With this mess going on I'm glad I ordered BFBC2 for pc.

My PAL 60GB model is affected. Damn it! I desperately want to finish Heavy Rain without reading any spoilers. A small mercy is that between work and other commitments I don't have much time for gaming at the moment. With any luck it will be fixed soon and I will have done enough productive things to justify a marathon session during the weekend.

It looks like people are thinking the problem is the leap year calculation in the hardware clock and really isn't a PSN problem per se....This isn't good if that's the case because I don't think the hardware clock can be fixed via an update. I hope I'm wrong, but man, Sony is screwed if they can't get this fixed via an update. I'm betting they're hoping that when the clock flips to March 2nd that the problem will go away...hence why they said the fix will be in "24 hours."

It's been confirmed that it's not a PSN issue. It has to do with the date on the PS3. Check out the official word from Sony:

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

More evil? No. Just more efficient. MS has to have broken hardware to keep you from playing. Sony can do it by altering time, without even trying.

That sounded familiar, then I remembered that the Zune had a leap year bug just over a year ago that resolved itself after 24 hours.

I have a slim and I was just playing MAG a while ago and I noticed a big drop off in the number of people playing, usually at this time in the last couple weeks there'd be 5 thousand in domination mode and now it's around 2 thousand now.

I think it's pretty obvious that this is a blatant copy of the Zune date bug from a year or two ago. MS was the innovator and Sony is just playing catch-up.

I can roast eggs on my Ps3 too. It runs hot. I was playing Cod when I was taking a bath once and when I got out I was still wet and I touched the side of the ps-noob and it burned my cankle. Things junk! and it apparently hates cankles. I'll never buy a ps4 when they come out lol

Not any more! This is like the Y2K bug, only that never actually happened. The only thing we have to deal with on PCs is DRM, and guess what? DRM is the reason PSN games don't work when your date/time is horked. No offline mode? At least on PC we know that before the game comes out.

I would sem that they are corrupted in some way since the song is garbled and the pictures do not show up on the screen properly, they flicker back and forth from my wife and I to static and back. I realize that you are being sarcastic, but ...

This has been true for a long time. I used to be sort of anti-MS, but now I only consider them mildly evil. And lets face it, most companies are anti-consumre in some capacity or another. It doesn't mean you can't like them somewhat, but they will screw you now and then.

Unfortunately Sony is the tech company at the top of the list as far as I can tell. I will restrain my complaints to just the PS3:

Ungodly DRM? check (requires a dedicated Cell core)

restricted use of OS that could make the PS3 more general purpose? check (no access to GPU or half the memory, nor many other devices)

Deciding they didn't want to deal with PS2 support after they had already developed some pretty good emulation software for the PS3? check

I'm probably leaving out stuff here, but Sony has gone beyond the point of paranoia of being fearful of consumers.

Nintendo keeps doing shitty stuff battling homebrew, but compared to Sony, they're practically angels. I don't have an XBox so I don't follow MS much here.

Trophies would not be affected anyhow if you had synced before the issue arose. All that trophy info is stored on Sony's servers so you can always get it back.

The Sony blog is reporting all fixed now, and yes it was a "leap-year" bug in the system clock and nothing to do with Heavy Rain as some had been suggesting. Apparently Sony was watching the Universal movie and got confused.

We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.
If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Or buy a PC and every failure becomes your own responsibility. Sadly due to the pussification of the world through such abominations like Barney the Dinosaur and Teletubbies the console-tard generation can't handle that much pressure.
