View Full Version : What about steam justifies paying 10-15$ more per game?

We don't get a box, booklet, or physical copy of the game. If you buy a game through steam but the servers are hosted by the parent company (like EA) then the servers could be shut down at a later given point.

Can anyone please explain why steam games cost more than ordering from gogamer or any other retailer. It perplexes me.

I think the cost depends upon the timing of your purchase. Why it would be more initially, I don't know, but I do have success finding bargains on Steam on lots of software.

Steam games cost more? Really? Since when?

Most of what i buy on steam is considerably cheaper than a box version. Hell, most of what i buy on steam doesn't even HAVE a boxed version.

Well I find new games more expensive on Steam, I think it's down to publishers setting the price.

This. You must be thinking of Impulse or something. I think I've paid full price maybe twice for a Steam game, and it wasn't more expensive than a box copy.

Furthermore, Gogamer eats your savings on the shipping.

Ok go look at borderlands now on steam, or even fallout 3 goty. It's been out a while. If any of you can justify the price with a rational reason over gogamer's 37.90 I will be amazed. Atm I view you all as sheep.

Why are you focusing on Steam? Gogamer is selling below MSRP to clear stock. Digital distributors don't have stock to clear, which means their sales are more or less purely promotional. You'll find that to be the same price (FO3 GotY) at D2D and other providers. Considering that Gogamer is all out of PC copies of Fallout 3 GotY, it stands to reason that you'd buy somewhere else if you really wanted it. Is guaranteed availability with no S&H (as in cost/wait/dealing with shipping service) a rational reason?

Amazon and Newegg have it listed at $45. You can usually find it a little below MSRP at the online retailers so that people can easily factor in S&H to the price. The average price isn't actually below what Steam is offering. You only presented a reason to shop with Gogamer... which is cool by me, I'm a fan of them.

Most of the time, Valve charges the price publishers tell it to. In different regions (mostly outside the US) this is higher than in other regions (pretty much just the US, although sometimes there are different specials or exchange rate anomalies which make Americans pay more).

I'm currently trying to avoid paying a premium for Chaos Rising. I've just spent two hours trying to create an account with a US IP address via various proxies, but the furthest I've gotten (using www.virtual-browser.com) is Steam telling me 'Your account creation request failed, please try again later.'

Could somebody please help me out? I'm happy to pay for games, I just fail to see why I should pay more just because none of the Australian retailers compete on price, and they want to make sure Valve doesn't either. I'm happy to send the money up front to the Paypal account of anyone on EvAv with a post count over 10 who offers to gift the game to me.

I recently grabbed Fallout 3: GOTY on steam for $25?

I picked up borderlands, AT LAUNCH, for $32~ on steam? Same for Left 4 dead 2.

You have to wait for the deals on steam, and they go away very quickly. It's not my fault that you missed them.

The only game I've bought on Steam full price was Left4Dead2, which even then I preordered so got 10% off. Most other games I have were all during sales of a sort, and all were worth my money and CHEAPER than buying the xbox equivilent.

I like steam because I can still chat on IM's while I can play, I have the Steam Support which is usually more helpful than not and because it's more convenient. I like the idea that all my games are in one place, that if the file does break or corrupt somehow I can redownload it without rebuying it and because I >hate< using my CD drive. Also, if my computer breaks which it likely will some point or another, I can still keep the same account and just get my games back again without having to look for CD's or whatever. Which I lose all the time.

Also, the money I save on not paying for xbox live probably covers any extra expences on the titles.

This is a great statement. So deliciously foolish.

Steam has better sales, a great integrated system, auto updating, I never have to have a disc in my drive to play, and there is no such thing as shipping or tax.

I can never bring myself to buy stuff from Gogamer. Shipping on a per item basis is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen.
