So last night I got a chance to attend the Microsoft Spring Preview Event for the XBox 360. Unfortunately, it was less of a preview event for upcoming titles and more of a way to launch Microsoft's Artist of the Month (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10705) program. The first artist of the month is Miss Natasha Bedingield. Don't worry, I never heard of her either, but your wife or girlfriend probably knows who she is.

<a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/shane_kim1.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/thumb.shane_kim1.jpg" width="320" border="0"></a><a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/natasha1.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/thumb.natasha1.jpg" width="320" border="0"></a>

Her music is actually decent, and she had a small acoustic performance of 2 of her songs. It wasn't my exactly my cup of tea. On the plus side, I snapped a great pic of Shane Kim checking out Natasha's backside.

<a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/shane_kim_checkingout.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/thumb.shane_kim_checkingout.jpg" width="320" border="0"></a>

Anyway....on to the games.

Ping-Pong from Rockstar (http://www.rockstargames.com)

The first game I sat down with is the mythical Ping-Pong title from Rock Star (http://www.rockstargames.com). Expect a full preview soon.
** Update Coming at RockStar's Request **

Ninety Nine Nights by Q Entertainment (http://www.q-ent.jp/) / Phantagram (www.phantagram.com)

There was only the demo version of N3 on display but it gave me a pretty good idea what the game is about. Button mashing. The game seems VERY similar to the Dynasty Warrior franchise except this is more fantasy oriented. The graphics are very impressive, with literally hundreds or so of guys on the screen at once. There's little to no slowdown even during battle with bodies, weapons and armor flying every which way. Instead of a fog of war like in Dynasty Warriors the game uses a depth of field blur style effect. The view distance is much farther than DW, but still not far enough.

Lucky for you guys I did snap some shaky cam footage of it: Vid 1 (http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/n3_1.MOV) and Vid 2 (http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/n3_2.MOV).
(yes that's me screaming "Mash man, mash!")

Dead Rising by Capcom (http://www.capcom.com[/url)

I was very anxious to get some play time with Dead Rising. The game didn't disappoint. It's a grueling, brutal, hilarious playground style game. The rep told me there are literally hundreds if not over a thousand objects in the game to use as weapons. Most objects even have 2 attacks. The game is incredibly gory. A few times I lopped off some Zombie heads at close range and as the fountain of blood spewed up, it covered my character. As I ran around the blood continued to drip off me. I beat up, decapitated, quartered, punched, kicked, golfed, dumbelled, teddy beared, crow bard, sledge hammered, laser sword (it's only a toy), boomerang (yes it returns to you), lego headed, shotgunned, pistoled, well...you get the idea. I must have at least used 30 objects or show in my short time with it. Each one unveiled some great new effect. For instance, with the golf club you can actually set up for a shot and hit golf balls at the zombies. Or, you can hit zombies directly with the golf club. You can knock them down, and then golf swing them as well.

The graphics are fairly impressive with some really nice texture effects and 100s of zombies on the screen at a single time. Animation is smooth and frame rate was solid. The game does have actual objectives and missions, even though I was content to just kill everything that moved. It looks like this title is getting pretty close to release. The only downside I heard of the game is there is no multi player element.

I also snagged a short shaky cam vid (http://www.evilavatar.com/images/previews/spring_xbox/dead_rising.MOV) of it.

Saint's Row by Volition

While I didn't get any direct hands on time with the game I got a chance to watch a few people play. The game is definitely a Grand Theft Auto clone. It's a decent looking one though with tons more interaction. The explosion effects alone on the vehicles are quite amazing. They literally break into pieces that fly everywhere. Not only can you blow up the vehicles, you can do things like shoot out the windshield and kill the driver before taking a vehicle. The game also sports a pretty nifty character creation tool.

On the downside the game was running at a slide show pace for most of it, rarely hitting 30FPS. On top of that the textures were pretty flat looking even though the model detail was high. The game needs a lot of polish but definitely shows some promise.

Tomb Raider: Legend by Eidos/Crystal Dynamics

Not much to say about the new Tomb Raider game. The graphics were solid and there were plenty of animations for Lara. The game seems to be getting back to the core of the Tomb Raider franchise with jungle style missions and running/jumping puzzles etc. Lara seemed to have quite a few new gadgets at her disposal including a headlamp, a crazy hi-tech pair of binoculars and more. The controls were tight, and there were a lot of nice little touches. Keep an eye on this one it might turn out to be a solid title.

Summary

That's about it. Honestly the whole event was kind of underwhelming, and I was disappointed we didn't' get to see Gears of War, Mass Effect or even Blue Dragon. I'm sure Microsoft is saving those titles for E3 in a few months. There were a few other titles there like Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2, Battle Field: MC, Top Spin 2 and X-Men 3. But I either didn't see them or didn't have time to check them out. All in all, Dead Rising looks like the most fun title that is coming out.

Good stuff bapenguin

Glad to have someone on the "inside" to tell it like it is.

Good to hear Dead Rising is as fun as it looks. That's the title that might get me to fork over for a 360.

Great article. So can I safely assume that now you're really looking forward to E3 after this little taste of what Microsoft has up their sleeve...?

Honestly I'm more looking forward to E3 to see what Nintendo shows. But I'm curious to see what news things MS will bring out, including un-announced stuff.

About Saint's Row. . . can you kill whores?

I just want to know if we might see the whore union up in arms again. :)

Not sure about whores...didn't see any. But I did see some Old Ladies getting blowed up.

Oh I tried, but MTV, VH1 and BET take priority over Evil Avatar. :(

Hey, I noticed you had a pic of a Texas Hold 'Em game - that's coming out for Live Arcade at some point, right? Any info on that? I'm curious if they'll use real money/Microsoft points, or if it'll all be 'pretend gambling.' Depending on their decision, I'm looking most forward to that, and Street Fighter II on the arcade in the near future.

Actually, speaking of XBL Arcade, I saw in the rumors section of EGM that they were putting Halo 1 available for download later this year - with online capabilities! Anyone think there's any truth to this rumor? I also noticed they mentioned a "Lost" game coming out in the fall, then I realized it was the "April" issue (they put an April Fools joke in every issue), and I figured that was it - but maybe the whole section was a joke, who knows.

There wasn't a rep there so I couldn't ask any questions. The game played pretty well though. I do know the game is going to be free. When I started it up I chose my stating cash amount, but that was single player, not sure how it works in multiplayer.

No Street Fighter 2 there though. :(

Sounds like I'm gonna need to buy Dead Rising and NNN, then read reviews for Saint's Row to see if they fix the framerate problems.

An original Halo with online play would be great, but only if it uses the maps they put into the PC version. I'd pay a full $60 for that.

Nice stuff! I'm glad to hear Tomb Raider is still coming along nicely. I've been hooked on waiting for Dead Rising since I watched the trailer and the dude was killing zombies with dinner plates! :D

I'm going to trust that Dead Rising is much more interesting than the footage you presented, considering that you could only appear to do one move with whatever large stick was being wielded. Having lots of different things to kill zombies with isn't very entertaining if each one only has one animation.

Someday the world will see this quote and laugh at a time when Evil Avatar was not the juggernaut of gaming information that MTV is.

Wait a second...

No man, the April Fool's joke was obviously the iGame from Apple. At first I saw that headline and thought "now why didn't I see anything about this on EA?" and then I realized it was the April issue. I vote it one of their worst so far - obviously not real.

KHAAAAAAAANNNNN!

This game begged for co-op and a Halo 2 Zombies style adversarial game mode. Why god why? Saddest news I've read all day.

Oh, well you're probably right - I actually haven't gotten through the whole mag yet. But if that's the case, then this issue has two April fool's joke - because there's no way a game about Lost would be this close to release (they say fall, which is like, 6 months away) without us hearing about it anywhere else. PLUS the premise - "Losties versus Others," or whatever they called it, is a terrible idea, that anyone who's a fan of Lost knows isn't in the spirit of the show. If they were to make a Lost game, it'd have to be much more along the lines of a MYST-type game (even though I was never a fan of MYST) and focus on the mysterious of the Island rather than an action/shooter/fighting game.

Did you try the, "I'm fucking Evil Avatar, Goddamnit!" I have found that it either works wonders or gets you thrown out.

I'm really looking forward to Dead Rising, it's nice to see that the fun-factor is making it's way back into games. I'm tired of re-hashed titles with new weapons. Then again I'm not asking designers to create whole new game archtypes. Just make them fun and innovative. Make me stand in front of a wall of games and not know which to buy because they're nothing alike, yet they're all appealing and fun.

Yes well, then they might have thought you were Evil Avatar and given you the respect you deserved, but they also just might have thought you were bragging about having Evil in a "bedroom activity" kind of way. :D

No, i'm pretty dissapointed. I didn't even know the game was there until I saw it in another Blog. I'm not sure where it was, I thought I caught everything but there wasn't enough time and we were kinda pushed out the door.
