Red Orchestra (http://redorchestragame.com/) is now available for all you Steam users, with aboxed version coming soon. For 25 dollars you get some awesome WW2 Eastfront combat.

Based on the most highly-acclaimed mod ever made, Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 is a full-featured, stand-alone World War II game that brings players to the frontlines of Eastern European combat during the height of World War II. Players choose from 24 infantry weapons or crew one of 14 detailed vehicles on the Russian Front between 1941-45. The combination of roles across thirteen maps, based on real-world locations and battles, allows Red Orchestra to finally achieve its goal of delivering a full first-person, World War II infantry and vehicle combat simulation.
If you like realistic multiplayer shooters, Red Orchestra is for you. Sure it has a steep learning curve but that keeps the kiddies away.

Anyone play it yet and have thoughts?

I am looking into this, love DoD and DoDS.

DoD and DoDS are pretty lame. Im guessing this is pretty different, but give me a demo...

Is this going to be any/significantly different from the free mod for UT2k4?

I don't think this is meant to be like DoD(S) from what it sounds like -- that is, it sounds a bit more realistic.

The code and other stuff is 90% new. It's nothing like the mod, looks much better and the gameplay is much smoother. It has new maps, new vehicles & weapons. Easily worth the 25 bucks.

I played last night, it's rally awesome. a huge improvement over the RO MOD if you ask me. and much more challenging then DOD-s. So yes i think it is worth 25 $ :)

I liked the mod to some degree, but it wasn't polished enough for me...
The game fixes that.
It's quite excellent. Lots more little things than the mod had, like resting your gun on objects to eliminate sway.
The graphics are much nicer than the mod. All the maps look incredible.

But don't go into this game thinking it's like DoD or BF1942... it plays completely different.
Wait for the demo if you're not sure about it, it should be out within the next couple of weeks.

Does anyone know if it supports widesreen?

So, it's like Operation Flashpoint in a WWII setting?

DoD and DoDS are pretty lame.

I'd be curious to know what WWII based shooter you play online that is better?

I've played almost all of them and DoDS is one of the best.

Does anyone know if it supports widesreen?

Yes. It runs quite happily at 1920x1200 on my system, and it's Unreal engine so you can just change the .ini if you're running at a non-standard res like some laptops (1440x1000, etc.).

So, it's like Operation Flashpoint in a WWII setting?

Yes, but without the squad-level stuff, and maps are morelike BF2 than OFP's whole island deal.

I'd be curious to know what WWII based shooter you play online that is better?

Red Orchestra: OstFront 41-45.

You mean the new one?

I downloaded the mod for Unreal Tournament and it felt slow, dated, and looked somewhat blah.

I'm very curious to try the new one...I guess I was asking what already released games other than this new Red Orchastra are better than DoDS.

I would love suggestions so that I can try them.

demo, where is the demo?! is it so hard to create one, with a single map?

Kefkataran

Demos of mods are rare, even paid mods like this. That said, I wouldn't be too surprised if they do something like they did with DoD:Source allowing you to play a free weekend in the future. That'd be nice.

This isn't a mod though...its a full featured game. The creators obtained an Unreal Engine license. This thing is stand alone...correct?

As soon as I have 25 bucks I'll pick this up! I loved the mod and played it a great deal. I got DODS not too long ago, as I was a huge fan of the original, but I can't seem to enjoy it all that much as it's really buggy for me. Random lock ups and ping hickups left and right! Very depressing when I actually like playing the game!

Thats too bad man...I play DoDS religiously and its somewhat rock solid...once in a blue moon the players will "stick" to each other...so both players have to go prone to break apart. Its annoying but somewhat rare.

Otherwise its beautiful to play.

Ack, you're right, I think it is standalone. :p That said, me not so bright.

So did they eliminate the floaty, dream-like feel to movement? I never could overcome that in the UT mod despite really trying and finally just gave it up. If they got rid of that nasty floating-thru-molasses feeling, I'd be willing to drop $25 on it.

It does support widescreen, and it looks beautiful, although some things could look better (the water mainly, cough). This game plays nothing like any other WWII shooter, and respectfully, that's why it won 'Make Something Unreal Contest'. For those who hate having all these unrealistic things in games, they aren't here (or they are here, but can be disabled). No crosshair, no exact ammo count, none of that reliable stuff. Infact, early on playing the UT2004 mod, I often killed my own teammates because I was so used to the mainstream difference of team uniform. Anyway, it's a great mod, if you like the arcadey, BF2 and DoD:S, this may not be for you. However, something those games cannot have that this game frequently shows, realism and a level of immersion. The tank battles, the sprinting across an open field while your teammates are taking fire, the rush of holding a position.

A demo is due out soon enough, although like said before, its worth the $25!

awesome! i loved RO for UT. The best part is when you get your gun shot out of your hand.

RO is shit. A clunky, buggy poor-man's DoD.

If you're going to PAY for a MOD, get the real thing.

Just kidding...I think I might spring for this...I'm a sucker for Steam games!
