Planning this press conference before the GDC and E3 might be a good move. That way they can get the bad news of the delay to 2007 out of the way now, and focus on creating hype for their product at those two events.

The console will be the same, although somehow refined. The controller will be a bastardized amalgamation of the Dual Shock and boomerang.

Hard drive will be announced as optional.

Additional add-ons like keyboard, mouse, etc. will also be unveiled.

Having different Blu Ray and DVD versions would be the best possible thing for the PS3 and the worst possible thing for the Blu Ray. Given how they seem dead-set on burdening the PS3 with carrying Blu Ray, I don't see it happening.
I'd love to see it, I just don't expect it from them at this point.

Me too. However it will certainly put a damper on Sony hyping the capacity of Blu Ray as a vital tool for true next generation games. Of course we all know that the extra space is pointless considering that almost every current game is coming in at under half of DVD capacity. In any case, I would be surprised if Sony manages to put a Blu Ray drive in to every PS3 and still make it price competitive with the 360.

Making the BluRay and Hard Drive optional add on only strengthens the links in Sony's value chain. As for the woobulation convertor, the problem with it has been solved with the additional resources of a 14.5 gigaflop pathway which the PS3 will now feature.

I don't think there will be two versions. One of the positives of the PS3 is the huge disc space potential. Making two versions might make the thing cheaper, but I am betting on just one system. A bottom line BR player, but one that functions good enough.

I mean, if there is no Blu-Ray standard, this is a pretty uninnovative next-gen for MS and Sony. More of the goddamn same.

I was playing Xbox over the weekend, the original, and I was amazed at how good the visuals still are for the machine. Black is beautiful. So here we are going into a new generation of consoles and basically what we have are patched versions of their previous systems. Yawn. At least the PS2 had DVD, something that the PS1 didn't.

I'm bored to tears with Sony and MS's new systems already.

Here is how far behind Sony is. Let us presume that the system does release in spring. That means devs should have had the dev kits for a few months now, and certainly first party teams a bit longer. And what was the most critically and commercially acclaimed first party game from Sony for the PS2? God of War of course. We now have official confirmation of God of War 2. It is speculated to release in Feb 2007. Now don't you think this is a game they would have wanted on the PS3 to do for PS3 what games like GRAW and Oblivion is doing now for the 360? Instead, they are going to release the game almost a year after the console's supposed launch (barring any delays of the game). Now yes it will play on a PS3 and we all pretty much agree God of War is one of the prettiest games on the PS2, but presumably the PS3 will make it look terrible. If they haven't even been able to prep their biggest current franchise for the next gen, they need to get moving.

And in regards to the storage of Blu-Ray (I saw it and it made me think of this), if games are still not filling up DVDs, this is simply going to encourage people to make ridiculously long HD prerendered cinemas ala FFX. I hope the days of prerenedered junk is behind us, as I think graphic engines today are more than capable of telling the story. Remember, a new format does not mean innovation or improvement. Cartridges lasted me quite well for over a decade.

It is %99.9 fact the killzone was pre rendered as a movie, not a demo or really running on a ps3. The cutscene masters Blur Studios turned down the chance to make the kill zone trailer and told on camera that it was pre-rendered. Go to gametrailers.com and search for blur studios.

It was about how stupid it is that Sony annoucned a system and a year later has information, which is odd as the only information they have not given out was the price and release date. As everything else was given as fact. The PS3 has USB ports and bluetooth and wifi and HDMI and whatever else and blu-ray, it also has Cells and will link to your blender for better power. Anything else well, then that would mean Sony was full of shit.

The march issue of the scandinavian magazine Gamereactor says the same thing (PS3 info mid-march), and it also claims that a leak at Sony has said the the EU and US date is september, with the japanese release a few months before that.

i bet there will only be blu-ray in the thing. sony is trying to build a platform. they can't do that if they don't force it upon as many people as they can.

i'm guessing they will have some 'surprise news' like maybe they are launching early in japan at a higher price tag.

they may have 2 boxed versions avaliable too, a 'dvr' version with a hard drive and the gamer version.

and i'm betting the controller will only be slightly refined from the boomerang to be less 'extreme' but the same idea.

If that mag was caulculating that there'll be a September US/Euro release with a Japanese release a couple/few months before then, that would put the Japanese release in July or earlier, and I really have trouble buying that. Sony may yet surprise us, but with the lack of any demonstrations of playable games, price announcement, specific release date, etc., it just seems really unlikely to me that they'll be releasing anytime prior to this coming holiday season (which they had certainly better release in time to take advantage of).
