Driver: Parallel Lines offers an open, fast-paced driving action-movie experience and features an unfolding storyline of double-crossing and revenge. Set in a photorealistic interpretation of New York City, players take on the role of a notorious 18-year-old who, free from conscience and rules, is the most sought-after driver-for-hire in town. WorthPlaying (http://www.WorthPlaying.com) had a chance to try out a recent Driver: Parallel Lines beta build, here is a snip:

The gameplay in DPL isn't just limited to, well, driving. The Kid packs a pistol as his default weapon with an unlimited supply of ammunition, but it's not the biggest damage dealer you can get your hands on. While driving, your character can lean out of the window at the press of a button, lock onto the nearest enemy or target, and riddle the vehicle with bullets. Tires will pop, glass will shatter, and bullets will create little holes in the once-perfect metal exterior of the enemy vehicle until either the driver expires or the vehicle goes kaboom in a satisfyingly Hollywood-styled explosion and rain of debris.

They're using real actors to do the cutscenes? Bah.

Hi guys, I read these forums all the time but have never posted. I just had to point out that those aren't real actors in the cut scenes, they just look that good. Look closer. :)

I find it hard to believe this could actually be good after driver 3

DrIVer :)

As an aside, my friend has playtested this as part of his university course, sounds alright.

I would take early reviews with a whole bag of salt after what happened with #3.
And why no next-gen version? If they can make a Driver game that's as good as the first one, I would love to play it on the 360.

I find it hard to believe this could actually be good after driver 3I thought no Driver could suck after playing the first one. Look where we are now.I would take early reviews with a whole bag of salt after what happened with #3.Exactly. I'm not even renting it until this board is full of people with post counts of 100+ who dug it.

Well, compared to driver 3, this game is much better, not that it could get much worse.

The same guy who did this DPL preview, reviewed Driver 3 and hated it, so if he says its a lot better, he has a base of reference and knows what he is talking about.

I saw a demo of the game in the newest PSM but didn't pick it up. (Thats PSM, not Official Playstation Magazine)

Hi Kara, thanks for posting. Couple of questions for you: what are you doing to make this one fun, whereas Driv-three-er was not? Also, what is up with the idiotic names? Do you plan on paying reviewers for high scores again? Do you learn from your mistakes, or are you doomed to repeat them?

Driver 3 was a good game....but Atari wanted to ship it with too many fucking bugs. If the bugs were dealt with, the game would have been great.

The game was hyped, Atari wanted a GTA clone out the door, so they fucked with it.

What, so you're thinking Atari isn't desperate and need money? You think they didn't just shove this POS out, like Driv3r?

This thing looks like cack!

I thought the demo looked pretty nice. A nice HDR-like hack with the lighting, for example. Pretty impressive for the PS2.

Oh so we are supposed to be excited about how good this game will be ?
I was thinking more that the excitation will be coming from not knowing if its gonna suck even more than the last part but it seems I have to adjust my thinking :)

am I the only one who had a HUGE problem with the demo? I got it with the xbox magazine and the damn thing is buggy as hell. Locks up every five seconds or so, then will proceed for another five seconds, freeze for five, play for five, freeze for five, etc.

What the hell!

I don't remember having any problems with the demo. That sounds like it's having trouble streaming data off the disk.
