Edge Online has posted a couple of quotes (http://www.edge-online.com/news/halo-reach-%E2%80%9Cbending-the-xbox-as-far-as-itll-bend%E2%80%9D) from the Halo: Reach interview found in the first issue of the dead tree version (http://www.edge-online.com/features/out-soon-e211) of their website, including word from Bungie that they are pushing the Xbox 360 to its limits.
“We are… taking every advantage of everything on the CPU and GPU, and every bit of memory in order to produce the look of Reach beyond anything of Halo 3,” said the game’s creative director, Marcus Lehto. “We're pushing it as far as we can go. With every iteration we understand what more we can exploit with the hardware.”
I can see how emulating the art style from Gears of War would push Bungie's skills to their limits.

I've never liked bungie's execution in art style. I think the halo games are kind of ugly, honestly. I never played ODST, but all the previous ones just seem... off.

This issue of Edge also shows some in game shots of Dead Space 2.
Nothing to graphic - the new suit is described as a "space ninja" and the claustrophobic corridors setting is making way for more larger varied environments
Also creepy child like alien with long really long fingers and heads that pop open when you give them a thwack!

So the Xbox 360 max screen resolution is 1080p right? I'm not holding my breath on that!
I wonder if the will even be 720p or rather sub 720p like Halo 3.

One of the great things about the original Halo was that you're the first of a new breed, essentially your a technological superhero with a mysterious past. Changing that whole psychology to make you just one among many undercut the premise pretty heavily, even though it was inevitable. *shrug*

I for one absolutely believe that this game is going to push some boundaries. People tend to look only to Halo's graphics, which in the past haven't really been cutting edge, but consider what is going on under the hood. There's the awesome AI, huge environments, large scale battles, tremendous sound engine, saved films, all running at a faultless 30fps no matter how much shit is going down. I dare people to mention a single comparable game that does all this.

They're already more advanced than most of their competitors. Halo 2's MP lobby/matchmaking is better than all current gen MP games. For cryin' in the shower, MW2 just introduced host migration like it was some big thing.
If you're developing a MP portion to your game, it should be a requirement you have an Xbox with Halo 2 MP lobby/matchmaking running 24-7. That is your benchmark. You need to achieve AT LEAST that level.

That is the impression the original gave, but the reality is Master Chief was the last of a breed of technological and genetic super heroes. It was much more meaningful to me knowing everything that humanity had lost immediately before Master Chief et al. started pushing back.
The Fall of Reach is really the pivotal point of the entire Halo mythology, and could potentially be very interesting. It is unfortunate none of the game presented the universe in a compelling way, because it really is rich with history and interesting characters occurrences.
And unless Halo: Reach is much better than the previous games, Bungie is giving it all up before they even gave their creation a fair representation in game form. Bummer.

To say the graphics in ODST were substandard would be a huge understatement, especially the character models. And I assume you don't mean ODST runs 'at a faultless 30 fps' because I played that game twice, and experienced very noticable framerate stutters each time.

They all do that and do something more impressive than replays which have very little to do with visuals anyway.

Eh, Halo is Halo. I like it, but it's not my favorite franchise. It is however a gold standard that Microsoft and Bungie make their coin off of, so you probably won't see a PR statement released that says
“We're just not pushing it as far as we can go. With every iteration we understand what more we can exploit with the hardware to make a mediocre product."
I would laugh if they did that though. :)

I'm pretty impressed that the graphics of 360 games are holding up very well more than four years after its release. Makes me wonder if we're near the peak, graphically speaking...
I played ODST for 5 minutes. It then red-ringed my 360. After mailing the 360 back and getting it fixed, I still haven't felt one iota of impulse to toss ODST back in. What if it "pushes the limits" again?

There's a real correlation between using your 360 and seeing it head to an early grave, however, particularly with older models. That's not tied to any particular piece of software, but it is reality, and it's statistically significant beyond the rates of other consoles/hardware.
Turn it on, and you risk its death. :shrugs: Such is life.

I always felt Halo was kinda like the new Goldeneye, not the best game but something multiplayer that everyone seems to enjoy. Still, ODST was so damn boring I don't know if I'd try another Halo game after it. Let's hope they really change it up and add some innovations to this one!

The exact opposite is true, actually. Master Chief was the last of an effectively dead breed. He was the final remnant of what many in the Halo-verse deemed a failed experiment. Reach, however, goes back to the heyday of the Spartan project; back to when they were numerous, powerful and brutal.
I'm actually kind of excited to see entire squads and battalions of Spartans running around.

thanks Jesus. What's the stupid statement? Just so you know, the lack of impetus to play ODST and the fact it may red ring my 360 are only loosely coupled, at best. My experience with the game was tainted due to my experience, to be sure, but the game played like ass. Just my .02

You do know it's a prequel, right? And the Spartans in Reach are Spartan IIIs (well most of them) which came after the batch that included the Master Chief (Spartan IIs). This is important because the Spartan IIIs aren't nearly as resilient as the originals. They learned from the mistakes of the first and second batches, and the third batch was cheaper to produce and slightly more expendable. They sent them on missions behind enemy lines (read: suicide missions) because they were easier to make and train.
So, I have a feeling you'll probably watch all of your Spartans die throughout the course of the game.

It was a failed experiment because out of the thousand of potential Spartans they started with, only a couple hundred made it through. Out of those couple hundred, only one survived up until the first video game. The Spartans were in the program since early childhood; they were stolen from their homes and modified through gene therapy and cybernetic implants. Most of them died. Of the ones who survived, many were left crippled and were essentially used as high-ranking super intelligence officers.
It was called a failure because of the cost, both in money and spent lives.
There are loads of Spartans in Reach because it's a prequel. Most of them will be gone by the end of the story.

Wow, I never really thought much of Halo's story. Sounds deep....!
Wikipedia has a truly staggering amount of information about it, as well as the point that Larry Niven was asked to write the first Halo novel, but declined...I had thought that Halo was based in his universe but I guess they just borrowed the ringworld concept.

Since, I haven't cared about a Halo game since. I hope this will sway me, but I doubt it. I just really feel in Bungie's hands that Halo will always be a heavily flawed franchise. What started as a console FPS revolution now just looks slow, stale and outdated.

the problem is that halo 1 was the holy grail of gaming. completely perfect in every way with the most solid engine i've ever seen. how jason jones managed to program something as halo 1 using only C is still beyond my understanding today. i hacked the game over and over trying to make its physics engine crash and the only possible result was slowdown due to the hardware's RAM.
halo 2 was a piece of absolute shit coded by a bunch of hacks with not even half the original team involved. halo 3 was an excellent return to form but unavoidably lacked the magic of the original. you couldn't strike gold twice.
either way, halo 1 and the amazing mythology created by brandon boran, jason jones, alexander seropian, and eric nylund...that is the reason i am proud to call myself a true halo fan.

Clearly you missed my intention there. Maybe I should have used a smirking smiley of some sort at the end. What I was implying is that the game is over-hyped due to the fact that it introduced people to the genre, not because the game is great. I begrudge people going on about Halo being a revolutionary pinnacle of gaming, because deep down I recognize that they just don't know any better.

piracy was not even the discussion in this thread until Anenome pretended to be the Internet Defender and go into a righteous tirade of idiocy. while i have of course pirated games like everyone else here (not even debatable) i didn't have to pirate ME2. that being said, my opinion remains that it's one of the most graphically impressing and engrossing games i've played since Bioshock.
and to be frank, most people who go on and on about the evils of piracy are typically upset because they don't have the technical know-how to pull it off themselves. believe me, they would. i simply don't think it's necessary 99% of the time.

You REALLY must be illiterate and not have an OUNCE of technical knowledge to actually believe something so PAINFULLY false. I don't go off and insult posters unwarranted, but you seriously have to be a massive idiot to hold Halo as "the holy grail of gaming." You're basically saying Halo is better than everything else, nothing taken into account. It's flat out retarded.
To say Halo is a massively flawed and poorly coded series is an understatement, and while Halo 1 was a decent game, to say it was a fairly simplistic shooter is also an understatement. If any console shooter could take title of "holy grail" it probably would have been Goldeneye or Perfect Dark. No game that simplistic and mediocre is "the holy grail" of anything.

piracy was not even the discussion in this thread until Anenome pretended to be the Internet Defender and go into a righteous tirade of idiocy. while i have of course pirated games like everyone else here (not even debatable) i didn't have to pirate ME2. that being said, my opinion remains that it's one of the most graphically impressing and engrossing games i've played since Bioshock.
and to be frank, most people who go on and on about the evils of piracy are typically upset because they don't have the technical know-how to pull it off themselves. believe me, they would. i simply don't think it's necessary 99% of the time.
I agree. And it's obvious as far as the idiocy goes. I'm just saying I think it's unnecessary to get worked up like that over piracy. over being an idiot? Maybe, LOL. But yeah...

lol man, the fail with you is so legendary that i just love watching you dig yourself a deeper hole. wal*mart in georgia, alabama, and texas broke the street date and even forced bioware to lock an official sticky on their forums stating that early release discussions are not allowed. there's thousands of people right now playing legitimate copies.
the jealousy is coming off you like stink on shit.
Jealousy, please. I could care less who plays it when. Only piracy can incense me.
However, I don't find any reference to ME2's street date being broken with a cursory or secondary search. Care to provide some corroboration? Care to provide proof you live in one of these places?
Frankly I'm having trouble finding any info at all about a street date being broken.
This site (http://meforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=717288&forum=144) has a mention of someone's brother's cousin getting a copy and little more than that.
The OST however was released on the 19th, perhaps your cursory google search looking for an alibi turned that up and you didn't read closely enough?
I see nothing there, just an idiot trying to brag about something with no proof whatsoever.
I know at wal-mart that the fine for breaking street date is huge. My friend is the department manager of electronics and he said that it was like, $2000 and he'd lose his job, even if it was someone else that sold the game early.
Yeah, that must be the thread you were talking about, because it is locked. However, there's no evidence of it actually happening presented in that thread, and the thread it refers to also has zero info, that's the second reference to it on Google. There's nothing in there.
I think you're lying, and your pitiful attempt to cover your tracks sucks, you damn pirate.
.....What?
Do you honestly believe that the people on an internet forum don't know how to pirate video games?
correct. the percentage of people who actually pirate 360 games are extremely low. i would say it's accurate to claim less than 5% of the userbase. besides, you're simply going to get your 360 banned inevitably anyway. microsoft has servers comparing bits of legitimate copies with download copies in real time the second you connect. this was how thousands of people were originally banned, considering most pirated games are padded and incomplete (ie, missing data).

Fine, take a picture of the ME2 packaging, in your hand, with a post-it note that says 'Zeal' on it, and post it to prove that you bought the game. That shouldn't be hard for anyone on here to do in a good two minutes.

I never said he owes me proof, I simply offered a way for him to clear his name. He's not going to take it, obviously. And I'm speaking as a guy who's already put down money on the game and who is a huge fan of Bioware and ME2. You can't say piracy doesn't hurt all of us as gamers. And if someone walks in here implicitly bragging about pirating a game they deserve to be treated like dirt. How do you not think people are going to conclude you're pirating it if it's 3 days pre-release date? And I can't find any evidence that any store in the country has broken street date, check for yourself, don't take my word for it. Zeal pirating ME2 is still the most likely scenario at this point.

he wouldn't dare make allegations like this in real life. do you know why? he would either get his fucking teeth knocked out, sued, or a combination of both.
also, just to throw it out there, he's decided to make a blog entry telling everyone that i have pirated the game, without a single quote or shred of proof even alluding to such. as i responded to his blog, and will further state here, i received my copy 3 days ago due to pre-street date at wal*mart, along with various other thousands of consumers in the southern united states. the street date of halo 2, 3 and ODST were also identically broken by the same outlet.

Ya, except that there's zero evidence except your word that -anyone- has broken the street date. Got a link that shows -any- evidence of a broken street date conclusively online, anywhere? Anywhere? No. There's not. I looked. And your BS about those three cities, where did that info come from? I couldn't find anything about that even searching for it by name. Put up or shut up.

These are not the words of a reasonable human being. But it's not like we have cause to expect anything else from Zeal, he's been exactly like this from day one. Meh.
I'll say it a third time now (and I hardly care anymore), I'll back off simply because I allow that it's perfectly possible someone somewhere could've broken street date, three days ago (according to Zeal). Even though it's extremely improbable that there would be no evidence for this anywhere on the internet.
out of this interest of future threads, i wish to keep my disagreements with Anenome between us, personally, and outside the parameters of this forum. no further disruptions to topics and discussions will come from my side. i will deal with him on my own terms. to clarify, these are not threats, but a way to keep a civil environment that has clearly been degraded by our ongoing disagreements.

Sure, but you gotta admit that Halo has secured for itselfa place in the Gaming Canon. It's an important game in more than a few ways.
Halo II however, the magic was gone--such a let-down. And III never got a chance with me because II drained all enthusiasm.
And I actually liked Halo's reuse of terrain, it worked with the story and the gameplay. It's just a lot of fun.
Of course there are better FPSs now. And yes, Goldeneye is in the canon as well.
But the first in anything, when it is well done, is a revelation. Halo II can't top Halo, simply because Halo was already done once and done well :P It's impact was huge, it was fresh and fun. Halo II could only be -more- of that fun, not -new- fun.
The games that we tend to remember the most are often genre-creators or popularizers that real nail it. Eg: Super Mario 64, FFVII, Portal, WoW, Metal Gear Solid, etc.

MGS3 had that sort of resonance with me that the original Halo had. After beating it I just sat there with this feeling of "wow, that was a great game". It just seem to hit all the right chords with me, and this was also how I felt after completing Halo.
I have been playing through Halo 2 as of late to see if all the hate I had for that game was justified, and it really is. Just a lot of poor enemy and level design. I guess the sophomore slump hit Bungie pretty hard. But I thought 3 was a pretty good return to form, and ODST reminded me of the first Halo a lot in many ways, and is one of my favorites. So I still like the series even with all of its faults. Its just not blind love like so many people have.

Heck Wikipedia.org literally holds your hand on how to do it nowadays for anyone who is literate. It's more an issue of some of us actually grew up and realized that used games sales and piracey will kill our hobby(s), so we kinda.. stopped (my habit was Napster and Music 10 years ago sadly).

heh Gamestop loads up on exclusive pre-order bonuses (and crappy trade-in discounts)... Wal-Mart frequently breaks street-date. Competition!
gamestop is the rudest bunch of fat, fuckin nerds i've ever delt with. i walked in once when the pspgo first hit and asked:
"can i play my old psp games with the new go?"
the response i got was:
employee: "no."
me: "well, then how do i play games on the go?"
employee: *cracking nerd voice* "YOU CANT."
me: "what does that even mean? how DO you play GAMES on the system?"
employee: "you have to download them INTO the system, but you can't...play regular games."
i told him to fuck his own face and walked out. i'll never deal with those freaks of nature again. it's a clear example of someone trying to belittle the customer based on the preconception that i was a 'noob', if you will.
oh, another hilarious example i just have to share.
walked back in once looking for shin megami tensei for psp. i actually speak japanese fluently, but i naturally assume most employees at GS at least do not. out of kindness, i began to spell the name out after i pronounced the title, but the little japanese weeaboo behind the counter was quick to attempt to correct me with:
"sir, it is pronounced SHIN MEGAMEE TENSEE!"
i seriously cracked the fuck up and retorted: "can i just get he game, mam."

Our Gamestops all used to be Rhino's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhino_Video_Games), and I guess they sort of carried over the cool gamer sales clerk mentality over after the buyout. Guess I just got lucky, but all the GS clerks I've dealt with here are pretty cool. They usually know something about what I'm buying (cool to have a clerk get excited about seeing your purchase and even offer you some tips and stuff), and I never get any hassle when I need to trade something defective back in or if there was some other issue with the purchase.
Somehow I'm always getting stuck in line behind people who don't know much about gaming (usually parents buying random shovelware for their kids), and they're pretty good about handling questions and being friendly/polite.
heh Guess I should mention that this is a college town (one of the largest student pops in the US), so our Gamestops are all run by students (who can't afford to not have a job and can be easily replaced) instead of the gamer nerd outcasts I'm always hearing about everywhere else.

That's pretty funny. I was in a Japanese import store 'round here awhile back--I speak Japanese, not quite fluently though. There's a Japanese dude behind the counter, and as I'm browsing another Japanese dude comes up to him and says, "Chotto, Evangelion OST wa ikura desu ka?"
I had to laugh when the Japanese clerk frowned and said, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Japanese." :P

lol i like this guy. in all seriousness, i was just able to get a copy a few days early from a wal*mart who simply decided to sell'em the second the stock arrived. there's also, i'd say, at least 15-20 people on gamefaqs forums who were also able to secure a copy a little early through the same means.
some people will say i'm lying or whatever, but it's seriously insulting to infer i'd lie about something as silly as a videogame. i recommend you simply walk into your local wal*mart and ask for it by name. do not call, you won't get the same response. it all comes down to who's working and if they're willing to walk back and sell you a copy. worth a try.

Zeal, honestly, we asked for a picture of box in hand and a receipt of purchase.
I read the GameFAQs forum. No on there had gotten their hands on it, it was all speculation and 2nd hand reports of 'my brother's cousin got it' already.
WalMart does not, cannot sell early copies, and would be fined heavily for doing so. WalMart's computer system is incapable of actually ringing up a pre-release date game. You'd have to physically steal it to get it out of the store and have an inside-man to go into the back and get it.
Seriously, I was willing to believe that you'd gotten a date-break copy, but you just keep making it harder and harder to believe that with these evasions and half-truths. This picture is a half-truth. Anyone who pirated the game could provide exactly the same photo.

i don't think i'm making myself entirely clear here. i honestly do not give two fucks what you, any moderator, or anyone on this forum wants or requests of me. i find you incredibly annoying and i respect very few posters here. i post out of my own enjoyment and owe nothing to anyone. i chose to take a newer member a picture because i liked his attitude and wished to carry on a conversation.
i am not on any sort of trial here, i have nothing to prove, and i will never ever respect or care what you say. to me, you always will be a kid on a forum who tries far too hard to desperately be accepted by people you will never meet or truly know in real life. simply put, you define irrelevant. you are a new poster with no authority or value.
to show my seriousness, you're going on permanent ignore for the remainder of your stay.
endeth the lesson.
Uh, according to your note on my blog, you already did take a photo of the 'evidence' and you offered it to me and then you never posted it. I asked you to put it on imagehost, w/e, you have thus far failed to.
I even vowed to apologize to you if you posted any evidence whatsoever. I would humble myself before you, publicly, and apologize. And still, no picture, no evidence.
Enjoy your pirated copy, jerk. I'm sure I'll be really hurt by your ignoring me :P

you'll get a copy.
I tried three different employees at Walmart and even a none English speaker, all shot me down.

sorry to hear.
but people claiming the game hasn't been pre-released anywhere are now officially wrong (as usual). it's all over ebay.

A. Could easily be stolen / gray copies.
B. That wasn't your story, now was it :P
C. Have yet to see any mention of an actual street date being broken by Walmart, or anywhere for that matter.

Also notice this in the legitimate seller's notes (http://cgi.ebay.com/MASS-EFFECT-2-COLLECTOR-S-EDITION-XBOX-360-BONUSES_W0QQitemZ250567807726QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVi deo_Games_Games?hash=item3a570152ee):
"*Please Note*: I will be shipping this game on the 25th or 26th but not right after auction ends! I am not allowed to send it that early!"

Hmm, here's another one from the top three listings (one closes in 4 days, so non issue):
This listing (http://cgi.ebay.com/Mass-Effect-2-Xbox-360-Pre-Order-NEW-SEALED_W0QQitemZ260541768368QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVid eo_Games_Games?hash=item3ca97fe2b0) ends in 15 minutes, but look closer at the fine print:
DELIVERED ON RELEASE DAY 1/26/10
Full of shit much Zeal?
Fourth listing: "The game is on order and will arrive in our Warehouse early Febuary (About 2-2-10/2-5-10)"
Fifith: "(Will be delivered to you on Release Date: Jan 26)"
Sixth: "Free Priority Shipping, 1/26 release, Powerseller"
Seventh: "In Hand Ships on release date : 01/26/2010"
Once again, you did a quick Google search and failed to actually read the thread you're quoting, as with the GameFAQs thread.
Release-date broken my ass.

Even the ME2 Ebay listing that Zeal himself put up has this caveat:
I will ship this item within 2 days of when the auction ends. Thank you
The auction ends on the 25th, putting it safely within the release date of the 26th. It actually looks like the seller is trying to capitalize on someone thinking they can get an early copy. But it won't be.

Zeal, Anemone is one of the few I quite respect here, always rational and tries to be as polite as you get on the internet.
You're the one causing trouble. I doubt very much anyone here would accuse you of anything if you came clean and said you pirated it first and then bought it or something.

Oh Zeal, still yourself I see. In his defense, I actually know a few people that have a copy of ME2 already. They have produced high quality screens as well. One thing that is awesome, when you port your character over from ME1, you can keep him/her looking the same, or change the looks using the character creator.

sup.
i redesigned my character to look just like arnold schwarzenegger. it made the entire game that much more epic. enemies didn't stand a chance.

Something rude about including "Bending" and "Reach" in the same sentence.

There weren't hundreds of Spartan II's there were just over a dozen. Most on the ground during reach. A few, including John, were in orbit over reach when the covenant fleet jumped in and ripped them a new one. The Spartans in Orbit were about to depart on a mission to capture a covenant ship if I remember correctly. They were re-tasked to recover a nav core from a ship that couldn't follow the cole protocol. John survived, along with Linda, another Spartan II, who was put in Cryo.
No.
The spartans at Reach are Spartan II's. The 300 Spartan III's in Alpha company where massacred during Operation Prometheus in 2537. The 300 Spartan III's in Beta company were massacred in Operation Torpedo in 2545. Gamma company, 315 strong (15 stayed on Onyx and escaped to a shield world) were deployed AFTER the Battle of Reach and have not yet been seen in any of the fiction. Delta Company was never started. (This information comes from memory, but facts, operations and dates come from the Halo Wiki)
If you actually do produce evidence I will apologize to you, because I'm actually a decent human being. Until then you just plain got caught.
Friend of mine got it yesterday. Street dates are broken :-D
Stop being a timmy.
