Cinema blend (http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Rumor-No-Half-Life-In-2010-22325.html) mentions on their magazine reading journey that it is unclear what Valve's plan is for the coming year:

The February 2010 issue of Game Informer states that there won't be a new Half-Life game released in 2010. What's more, it's not even clear what form a new game would take. It could be Half-Life 2: Episode Three or it may be Half-Life 3.

GI makes no mention of Portal, the other series set in the Half-Life universe. In the summer of 2008, Valve put out a casting call for Portal 2 voice actors but we haven't heard a peep about that game since. The designer of the original game, Kim Swift, recently left Valve so we may be a long way from seeing P2 as well.

So much for frequent, episodic content, eh Valve? Still, at least I can kill zombies and collect hats in the mean time.

Isn't Episode 3 in the works?

Half Life Forever, after this long of a wait, we better get a Alex/Gordan sex scene at the end.

Tho that would prolly just be a close up of Alex's top and face for 1 minute with the standard no Gordan dialog.....Hmmmm....

I guess always being in first person has its downsides...

I bet valve could pull off that pretty cinematic-like, with the facial expressions.

There's no way we'll see a HL3 in 2010. Only rockstar could pull off a full fledged game in this short amount of time (GTA)... If we see a half life in 2010, it'll be HL2:EP3... but it'll be a good 6 months after any news even comes OUT about it before the game gets released. HINT: it won't be before June 2010.

Don't bet on episode 3 this year. They haven't said shit about it yet. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I'm guessing next year.

Wasn't one of the Vavle guys quoted a while back saying that we probably won't see episode 3 this year? Even if we did that would make Episode 3 being released 6 years after HL2....it was only 5 years from HL1 to HL2.

I think its taken so long they've had to scrap Episode 3 to make HL 3. I think Portal has made them rethink a lot of things since they are incorperating it into the story line.

I honestly think if Episode 3 or HL3 are not announced in any form at all at E3 then we won't see a game from then before Summer 2011, more likely winter 2011.

It sometimes makes me cry at night, in the dark...

I honestly don't care. Half-Life was groundbreaking in its day, but there are so many games today that, in my estimation, equal and exceed the most recent iterations/episodes, that I'm not waiting around for the title.

If/when it hits, I'll happily check it out. Until then, there's just a ton of quality software out there to be happy with.

They're making it so hard to remain a Valve fanboy. If they're not going to complete the HL2 story, then they can just finish TF2 with the engineer patch and get the fuck out.

Just to give you a refrence the team that made Episode 1 were suppose to be making Episode 3. Valve originally said they had two teams, one making Episode 1 and one making Episode 2. I never read anywhere that they changed that model, but that could be out of date easily.

If that holds true the first team took 2 years for Episdoe 1 and the second team took 4 years to make Episode 2. If the first team really started making episode 3 right after episode 1, then this year marks its 4th year in production.

So yeah, its been in the works for a hell of a long time for an "episode". I love Valve but they can be so damn slow. It hurts to see a new L4D in one year but still waiting 5+ years to see a real continuance of the HL story.

The sad thing is I really dig where they can take the story. I almost wish they would just release a sub par game so I can keep following the narrative. Or fuck HL the game, have the guy write a book and be done with it.

If the next game follows the basic narritive from HL2, I can sum it up for you; run from point A to point B. Hop on a vehicle, drive to point C. Run from point C to point D. Fuck up the alien big-bads. The G-Man shows up at some point. Gordon doesn't say a damn thing and you're still using a damn crowbar. Roll credits.

Much like with the first Half-Life, I really bought HL2 for the mods. Just like the first, I spend more time with a game featuring the words "Team" and "Fortress" than I ever did with the game proper.

As lukewarm as I am to Half-Life in general, I absolutely adore the opening sequence in the first game; I really get a kick out of the "normal day at work" shit they did. Honestly, I'm quite disappointed we don't see this sort of thing more often, because it really can be a very effective opening/tutorial sequence. And the tram...felt like I was in a movie.
Talk about a tangent...

I like what Valve does, overall...but I just can't bring myself to actually care about seeing or not seeing a new installment in the Half-Life series.

It takes them a long time to make any Half-Life game but its so worth it. The story is so good in my opinion that I keep buying the game even though I don't see the multiplayer being played as often as most other games. Still, the HL games have been well made. Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were breakthroughs during there time. Would be very interesting to see how the 3rd one turns.

Come on now, it's Gordon Freeman, you'd definitely see the back of her head...just hope he doesn't accidentally Donkey Punch with the crowbar.

Half-Life what?

Honestly, I couldn't even tell you what Episode 1 and 1 were, much less give a shit about 3. I went back and played through Half-Life 2 the other night(only the first few levels) and I was amazed by how often you have to STOP dead in your tracks with the music pumping so that Source could load the next scene. I shut it off because I couldn't take it. An open-world Half-Life is the only game I'll buy. I'm not interested in Call of Duty: HL3, the on rails shit is dead to me.

Not really fair to imply that was the direction the game design copying went. <_<

After Prototype and Fallout 3, I don't think the bullet-point trend of "open-world" is inherently better than a more railed game. I do agree whatever the next Half-Life game is, it should have a better engine than Half-Life 2, released in 2004. :P

I would take half life's scripted "on rails" gameplay over a boring overworld any day. in fact, i'd take it multiple times a day.

Truly open worlds are often like a book without plot.

It may not have physical barriers that put you on rails, but its missions still make you go from point A to point B, ala GTA.

I'd just like them to patch the source engine to have seamless level transitions.
