Has anyone seen Book of Eli? I've liked Gary Whitta when he shows up in podcasts, so I'm hoping the movie turns out to be good.

I didn't believe Roger Ebert when called Avatar the Star Wars of a new generation - but perhaps I was wrong.
At first glance, Book of Eli isn't fairing too well (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10010488-book_of_eli/) with the critics, but the overall consensus seems to be that it's a fun if flawed movie.
I've heard it Book of Eli was good. I'm gonna try to see it this weekend.

If you like a decent post-apocalyptic setting with leanings toward slower moving spaghetti westerns you'll enjoy Book of Eli. Not a spectacular movie mind you, but well shot and acted. Several "suspend your disbelief" moments but didn't hurt the entire package.
Granted I'm a sucker for the apocalypse, hell I work for the game company that developed Fallen Earth, and I give these movies a wide birth (enjoyed postman), but I think Eli stands above some of the other throwaways in the genre.
EDIT: Critics seem to be tearing this movie up and I don't know why. Some can't get over the use of the Bible in the movie but it's a McGuffin. It could of been any book and there's a shot at the end makes that pretty clear. Bring up Christianity and people tend to go Batshit for no reason sometimes. Ain't It Cool News has some fair reviews of the movie.

I was dragged by the family to Avatar. Don’t get me wrong the movie was great…the theater on the other hand not so much. With $40 for tickets (for 2D Avatar mind you), $8.50 for two medium drinks that were already flat and the usual sticky floors. But I’m sure everyone else knows that story.
These days I’m perfectly fine waiting for the movie on DVD.
Anyway back to Avatar. I thought the movie was great. Always something going one to catch your eye (for me anyway)…unlike the end to Transformers where Sam is running to the body of Optimus Prime…running…still running…whoop, Sam is dead…oh look Jesus Prime!

I doubt that it will ever stand up to the original (http://io9.com/5449428/book-of-eli-reboots-zardoz-for-the-twenty+first-century).
I watched Book of Eli this weekend and was surprised and impressed. I didn't have any expectations for the movie, but it had an interesting story, characters, and pacing. Best movie I can recall seeing since District 9.

Am I the only that finds it hilarious that Avatar, a scifi action/adventure movie, just won an award for best drama? ^_^ In a way this is a watershed moment, since scifi movies have always been kicked to the curb as not being culturally important enough to win the top awards.

Hey Evil, where do you get your numbers from? Could you provide a link?
BoxOfficeMojo.com has Avatar at $505,067,000 Domestic http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm
and $1,615.5 billion worldwide. http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/
Looks like it still has a chance at number 1 all time.
Also, have you seen the film yet? Or at this point, who hasn't?..

James Cameron's gotta feel like a hero too. Vindication on his life's dream project? A life's dream project is often very bad, surprisingly. Is he now too big to fail, will he now, almost Sony-like, flop on his next big effort? Will be fun to see what he tries next, if anything. Might be smart for him to retire :P One "Titanic" success in a lifetime is more than most people can ask for. Two is amazing and puts him up in the ranks of best directors of all time, but three might be asking too much.

I enjoyed Book of Eli but it definitely wasn't the post-apocalyptic action movie the trailers implied. There were really only three action scenes in the movie, each of them very short and they were shown almost in their entirety in the trailer.
Good movie but would've preferred more ass kicking.
Message-wise it's very muddled. They seem to send both pro and anti-religion messages in different parts of the film. *shrug*
I also saw Youth in Revolt this weekend. It was fairly good and had it funny parts. However, I'm getting tired of movies that are so full of themselves and their trendiness.
Message-wise it's very muddled. They seem to send both pro and anti-religion messages in different parts of the film. *shrug*I figured a lot of people would come away from the movie cherry-picking one of those two strong positions presented, and either love or hate the movie based on that alone. I think that is what happened in many cases.
I think the movie was trying to be more ambiguous. Though I admit I am not sure exactly what it was trying to say, and maybe calling it "ambiguous" could just as easily be switched with "incoherent".

I haven't and I don't plan on it. No matter how absolutely amazing the movie is I can't sit down for 3 hours in a theater, I'll wait for blu-ray.

I don't see why this is a bad thing. Have we reached a point where films are forbidden from addressing the topic of religion unless they are clearly pushing for a particular viewpoint? Perhaps the message the movie was attempting to send, was that religion is a complex issue, with both positive and negative roles within our society, and doesn't really boil down to the black/white issue many people want it to.
Also, on the point of Avatar's box office take, does it bother anyone else that none of these top box office lists are ever indexed for inflation? Everyone knows that $500 million in 2010 is quite a bit different from $500 million in 1977 (specifically it's worth about 28% of what it was in 1977), yet we all continue to treat it like they are directly comparable.

$503m is inclusive of the Monday. BOM has it as $493m (est) on the Sunday, so the figure might be an actual up to Sunday.
Just a guess though.

Sorry, but you will lose the only perfect way to see the movie, in 3D. Go see it now.
Btw, the movie was made to see that way :)

He could always buy a 3D tv and the 3D Bluray version of the movie ^_~
I don't think you'd be losing much to see the 2D version. I doubt many are watching it in 3D internationally.

I'm from Europe and I don't know anyone who didn't want to see this one in 3D. In fact the only runs of this in my local theater are 3D, 2D was dropped from schedule after few weeks.
Though I guess 3D theaters aren't that common so a sizable majority of people is forced to watch it in 2D, but based on my experience everyone wants to see it in 3D if they have a chance. Then again, I don't know many 35y+ people so might be just my limited demographic :)

Well of course, if you have the option to see Avatar in 3D you should completely do so, who wouldn't :P But, even in the US 3D enabled theaters are not the majority, IIRC.
Anenome
01-18-2010, 07:11 PM
Even if they were the majority, inside each theater is only going to have a few screens capable of 3D with many more 2D only. Still, with Avatar's success the drive to 3D is going to become a sea-change and theaters will actually think they must make every room a 3D room. Just a matter of time.

I've read the 3d presentations accounted for about 75% of the take. So yeah I'd say the gamble was a success.

3D is going to add to a good movie all around, but it's not the central draw. Rather, if you have a choice of which way to see a good game you're likely to choose 3D just because you can. 3D alone is not a draw--just look at how badly AstroBoy 3D did.

daybreakers is probably the best, slickest produced vampire movie i have seen since interview with the vampire and the original Blade. i recommend it to anyone that wants something intellectual and out of the mainstream.
the lighting used alone reminds me very much of T2.
oh, and Sam Neill makes the best vampire i've ever seen.

it burns. not.
been sprayed with that shit so many times i've developed an immunity to it. good luls though. and i'm sure i'm not the only one here who thought Avatar was just a terribly produced film.
People keep failing to mention Michelle Rodriguez is in Avatar.
That is the only reason anyone needs to not see it.

other than her, this guy on the left was Avatar's only redeeming. a badass, smurf killing marine. the look on his face describes how i felt through the entire boring film.

"You're not in Kansas anymore.....you're in some overblown 3D bullshit."
I was the only one in the theater laughing after every one of his lines.
"You get soft and Pandora will shit you out dead with zero warning."......really?

Provided you leave 10 minutes before the fail ending.
my only problem with the film was the obvious studio butchered ending, i agree. they might as well have put "DAYBREAKERS 2 COMING SOON" in gigantic 120 size font. even that would have been more subtle.
that being said, i thought it was ethan hawk's best performance since Gattaca (one of my all time favorite films) and sam neill was nothing less than intimidating.

Are you fucking kidding me Avatar is still going like this? I guess its the herds of idiotic teenagers and Bi-Polar adults seeing it multiple times since its so enlightening.
I was anti-avatar before I went to the theater. Its a good movie with great visual effects but thats all... I laughed too hard when I heard of the "best drama" "award".

I was anti-avatar before I went to the theater.
Then the reality is that you will continue to be anti-avatar simply as to not look like an idiot going back on your word and even hinting at an inch of thinking this was an enjoyable movie.
That you made up your mind about a movie even before seeing it tells me all I need to know about your ability to properly communicate your impressions regarding anything.
I wasn't anti-avatar nor pro-avatar before going to see it. Was expecting an average experience. Yes, the 3D really helped in the experience but an experience it was and for that I thank Mr. Cameron and his team.
