View Full Version : First ElderScrolls: Oblivion Revew in OXM

EternalGamer

The newest issue of OXM has an exclusive 4 page review of Oblivion in their April 06 issue:

Oblivion raises the bar so high that most RPGs would be (and have been) satisfied with a fraction of what's here. After 44 hours with Oblviion, what higher compliment can we pay it than to say we can't wait to play it again, creating new characters with an entirely different skill set, and visit every nook and cranny there is to see in Tamriel? So take heed when staring at Oblvion on a store shelf: your $60 will go further than it ever has, but prepare to get hooked for the long haul.

9.5/10
Only a few more weeks away. Personally I'm staying the hell away from this game until I finish my thesis this summer!

creating new characters with an entirely different skill set

You know, I've tried this about a dozen times, but I always end up the same roguely class in the end. :D

For the record, the OXM review does mention the framerate drops in large areas that were hypothetically "contraversial" about a week ago. They also review the new Tomb Raider game, which faired pretty well.

Does you demo disk work? Mine refuses to - this will be the third one in a row that's not worked. Someone at Future is about to get an earful from me.

I just got the magazine yesterday so I'm not sure. The demos were all repeats so I didn't bother putting the disc in yet to find out. Usually when it doesn't work, though, I find boiling it a pan of hot water for a few minutes does the trick.

Hate to be a pain, but allow me an informal poll. How many other EvAvers aside from myself are looking to get Oblivion when it first comes out, and for X360 or PC? (PC for me.)

And to pre-empt the following PC-Console Flamewar:

PC side: Resoution, Framerate, Mods, Keyboard/Mouse

There, now on to how great Oblivion will be!

It sounds crazy, but it does indeed work. On my old Xbox, I was stuck with one of the notorious Thompson drives, which were prone to constant lock-ups and read errors. I almost always had to boil the monthly OXM disk to get it to read properly (just be sure to dry it with something that won't scratch the disk).

As far as the informal poll goes, I have Oblivion pre-paid for the 360. Can't wait 'til the 20th.

a) My work load decreases
b) I've finished a few more games sitting on my shelves

We will see if my will power can meet the challenge.

This is a day one purchase for me. On the PC, without a doubt. I wouldn't even consider the 360 version (I don't plan on buying a 360) due to the absolutely incredible work the modding community has done with Morrowind. The mod scene for Morrowind is still in full force and new mods are coming out every day. All of this creative energy is going to seemlessly pour right into Oblivion, and make the game's scale jump into the stratosphere. As if it already weren't big enough!

I really like Bethesda's approach to mods as well. You plug in what you want, WHEN you want it. Want a house? Plug that sucker in. New swords? Plug it in. You continue your currently saved game, and go grab your news swords or dump all your saved up loot in your new house. There is no starting your game over. Don't like the mods? Take the plugin out. Budda-bing, budda-boom. Very, very well done.

Mods, and the game itself, were also pretty damn stable for me as well. A few crashes here and there, but I won't complain. I expect even better from Oblivion. Although I'm sure the framerate will be an issue because I don't have a two card SLI setup, but ain't that always the case?

While I prefer party based RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2, the quality and open-ended gameplay of Morrowind was just off the charts, and made the lack of a party a little easier to bear. I'm also glad they're moving away from the "alien" environment setting of Morrowind and back to a more classic medieval style in Oblivion. The mushroom houses never did it for me.

Day one, baby! Day one!

I cant wait to get this game. I have it preordered at 2 places just to make sure that I dont get screwed over out of a collectors edition (which HAS happened to mebefore at EB back when shenmue came out, where one of the CDS "broke" so they sold it to someone else who wanted it even though it was broken without even asking me if I wanted it... RIIIGHT)

360 Day 1. I am so geeked out about this game that I'm ridiculously embarrassed. But hey… it’s fun to let yourself go every once and a while. Reminds me of the days when I had to ask my mom if I could just look at the original NES Zelda box art because I had to wait till Christmas to open and play it.

I'm getting it on the 360, already paid for the CE. I'm going to buy my cousin a copy for the PC since I'm building his new PC this weekend and won't be handing it over until the 31st, as a surprise birthday gift.

I'm going to buy it a third time on the PC again, probably 6 months from now when my PC has been upgraded and when there are some actual mods out worth downloading.

Also note, my 360 resolution is 1280x960, which I'm pretty sure is about what most of you PC players will have, thanks to my VGA cable and 21" ViewSonic. So, "resolution" isn't really a bonus exclusive to PC players.

As for the boiling, supposedly there is some kind of glue or coating on the DVD's that can screw with the reader. So boiling them gets the glue to dissolve.

I have a copy of the regular edition for PC reserved and paid for. I'm thinking of getting a copy of it for the 360 as well for those extended sessions that the eyes can't handle. I won't open the 360 version until I've given it a try on the PC. Return policies being what they are these days.

My TV is a 30" Sony Wega HDTV capable of 1080i so that is certainly a compelling reason to switch the pre-order to the 360 to start with. Luckily I have some time to think about it.

Probably PC, unless I can find a 360 soon. And I don't want to buy it on PC until I've seen how it runs on my rig, so I hope one of my friends buys it or Bethesda releases a demo.

I traditionally only buy Collector's Editions for games I've REALLY been looking forward to playing. Sure, I don't think I've ever used anything inside a CE, but I feel that in a small part, I'm supporting a developer that I would like to see more games from in the future.

Halo 2 and Oblivion are the most recent, I believe.

Gack. My last two CE games:

Ultima IX: All I got out of that shit is a big ass box with some funky Tarot style cards that I'll never use and a cheese dick Ankh necklace... Oh, yeah, and a damn game I can't finish because of the bugs.
Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor. Came with a cheese-dick fantasy novel like I used to read in 7th fucking grade, a decent PnP module, and a set of dice in a dice bag (that I still use today)... Oh, yeah, and a game I can't finish because of the bugs. Meh nonetheless

I'm done with CE shit unless it's got some UberCool shit, and a stupid replicant 'coin' does nothing for me ;)

Yes it will...

BT: The Xbox processor will be multiple core, which at the time of Morrowind (2002) was a nearly unthinkable idea for a gaming PC or console. However, by the release of ES4: Oblivion (now 2006), the Pentium-D and Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors will be even more common place. The Pentium-D EE even features hyperthreading on each core! Will Oblivion be written to make use of these new features on the PC? If so, have you determined how threads will be divided (by class, like AI, physics, etc, or by immediate priority where physics could dominate two threads if little AI is present)?

GC: Oblivion will absolutely benefit from a multi-processor or multi-core PC architecture. These improvements have largely been driven by our optimizations for the Xbox 360 hardware. We have built a dynamic thread management system that manages processor load by our specific direction and by priorities. Portions of physics, AI, loading, audio, and rendering tasks can all be moved to different threads to keep the overall load balanced. The net result for the end user is a smoother experience.

Same. Considering how much the life of Morrowind was extended thanks to the modding community (I put well over 200 hours into that game over the years it has been out) passing up that opportunity for Oblivion was too much.

I must say though, that if I had a lesser PC I would probably end up going the 360 version. But as I mentioned in another thread the PC in my sig was built from the ground up specifically to play Oblivion the best way possible.

Oh and of course I'll be picking it up day one.

PC, but probably not day 1 given my poor (and super-busy) college kid status.

Ah, that makes a little more sense then. Personally, though, I prefer "Quick, Find a Tree!"

The Collector's Edition extras seem skimpy...

- Pocket Guide to the Empire
- "Making of Oblivion" Documentary
- a Septim Gold Coin

Instead of a coin, would rather have a pewter figurine like ES3:Morrowind CE.

Hmmm...can't decide.

Ya I would buy the CE in a flash if it had a cloth Map like they used to have in the old days.

I have a Ultima II cloth map kicking around here somewhere.

360 on Day One. This (plus Fight Night 3 and Ghost Recon: AW) is one of the reasons I bought a 360. Both GRAW and Oblivion would absolutely destroy my current gaming rig (poor little 6800 would probably start smoking at anything over 800x600) and I'm not up for spending $800+ to get something that could perform as well as I'd like. Plus the plug-and-go support for playing on my couch, wireless controller in hand, 5.1 pumping through the reciever while the 52" DLP gets a workout... that's awesome. :)

Hehe. Those maps rocked. I've still got all my Ultima maps.

I'm glad to hear that this game is all it's cracked up to be, but i'll have to wait, possibly quite a while, before I get it.

Ya... but I think it's all on one DVD too. That's the big plus for me.

Day one, Xbox 360, Collector's Edition.
Shrinkwrapped.
With coin.

This is one of the games I bought the 360 for, still waiting for Saint's and Crackdown.

It has to be the 360, that has a 110" 720p native projector attatched, leather couch in a dedicated theater room fill full surround sound. The room has been sound proofed so I won't bother the family upstairs.

I don't think I have bought my wife flowers lately....Maybe some jewelry too....

Morrowind still runs like crap on my system, even though I'm far, far above the recommended requirements. Only game with performance issues though, so I don't really want to mess with my drivers/OS too much.

You might want to google for the Morrowind FPS optimizer; game runs perfectly smooth on my mid-range comp.

Anyway, getting Oblivion for the PC ultimately, but I'll likely wait for the first couple patches to be released, aswell as some in-depth reviews once the initial hysteria is over. Don't believe the hype. :)

the projector/leather couch/dedicated theater room are not exclusive to a console, judging by the room i'm finishing...

although i'm still trying to figure out a cheap way to sound proof the room a bit... got any recommendations?

Unfortunitly soundproofing and cheap don't travel too far together.

Our room we put up a first layer of 1/2" drywall (normal drywall), then we used a product called "green glue", which in a basic sense turns sound energy to heat (not enough to notice...no it won't burn the house down), then another layer of 1/2" drywall. A solid core door with weatherstripping finishes sealing the space. All the outlets etc were sealed with caulk.

The green glue isn't cheap, but it does a very good job. The bedrooms are right above this room, and I can watch movies at a reasonable level while the family sleeps 15 feet above me. I do have to turn the bass down a bit...but that is the only thing that gets upstairs...there really isn't much that will stop bass...I suppose layers of lead...but that's kinda heavy for a ceiling.

I found avsforum an invaluable source for learning about soundproofing...I don't know if it's proper to point to other forums...but it's a much different topic than this forum.

Oh, I do have a beefy computer to drive the dvd playback aspect of the room (3.4Ghz HT, 1GB ram, 6600GT video card...)all you need for High def playback, but since all the equipment is in the back of the room the keyboard/mouse interface isn't as nice as the wireless controller...

(I went with an IR keyboard so I could program the remote to do keystrokes).

I think I've rambled on enough :)

I'm getting it for the PC. This was a tough one because of the Xbox Live angle, but the long term prospects for Oblivion on the PC are good - it's got an extensive toolkit and there will be tons and tons of content and user made mods that the Xbox 360 version won't have. I would still consider the 360 version if I had a low end PC, but I have a good system, and chances are it will look marginally better on the PC anywyas (from what the previews have had to say.)
I'm restricting 360 purchases to games which are exclusive or work better than other platforms.

Got my PC copy. Runs smooth as hell. Originally set it for medium graphics settings, but I upped them after a while. Get a teensy bit of slow-down once in a while when wandering out doors, but nothing highly noticeable, and overall it's just gorgeous and smooth and great. SO GOOD. So much better than Morrowind was on every level. They fixed all that they should have. Kudos to Bethesda.

I've put about 8 hours into the 360 version...there are little "glitches" when you wander the countryside, and if you stare at a mountain in the distance the texture is "muddy"....then again it's what it looks like when I see mountains in the distance...

Those tiny issues don't compare to all the goodness that is in there. I can't wait for the little one to go to bed tonight so I can claim my rightful place in the Thieves Guild! :)
