Eric Ruth Games (http://www.ericruthgames.com/) has come out with an unofficial 8-bit version (http://kotaku.com/5440587/unofficial-8+bit-left-4-dead-now-available) of Left 4 Dead for PC, in case you wanted to conjure up nostalgic feelings of Nintendo glory! Gameplay video attached, that reminds you of a mix between original Legend of Zelda and Gauntlet. Thanks to Kotaku for the story.

Heh. That's pretty cute. I'll have to give it a try when I get home.

There was a gameplay video a while ago, but I'm pretty sure it was just released.

Useless post is idiotic.
I loved it! Why don't more developers work in 8 bit, imagine the open world game you could create with todays tech if you did 8 bit graphics.

It's cool, but I don't think it would sell. Well, it would probably sell, just on the DS. Question is why someone with this much ability isn't making DS games :P If I had games programming ability, I'd pump out a Chrono Trigger-style clone in no time :P
But, if you did want to move backwards on tech, it would be interesting to create a recursive system, meaning that rather than going back to program with pixels, why not use polygonal cubes as if they were square pixels, zoomed out to the distance of a pixel. The things you could do with 2D graphics made of apparent pixels actually being rendered with polygons would prove mindbending, I think.

If they put it on a cartridge and had all 4 campaigns I would buy it just to support them.

To me it looks a lot like the NES version of "Alien Syndrome". Especially the way the characters move and the look of the bullets.

While not exactly what you are describing, this is similar to how many "2D" games function now, rendering what appear to be sprites as 3D elements.
It also reminds me of how voxel engines work, which were a brief direction some 3D engines went early on. Delta Force 2 comes immediately to mind.

Or there is the upcoming 3D Dot Game Heroes for the PS3, which is absolutely adorable: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/from-softwares-3d-dot-game-heroes-does-pixel-art-ps3-style/
A more knowledge friend informed me the 2D-sprite-in-3D-engine is usually called a textured quad.
