1UP (http://www.1up.com/) has revealed (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148593) Rainbow Six: Vegas is the next chapter in the Rainbow Six series for the next gen consoles. In addition, they've posted a screenshot for your viewing pleasure.

...Well, now that time is here, and we can reveal that the new game is called Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Check out the April issue of EGM for the full scoop with loads of screenshots and information, but for a taste of what you can find in the issue, check out the first screenshot of the game below
Vegas, baby. Vegas.

Damn, all kinds of beautiful games popping up for the 360 lately. Looks like MS is positioning for a KILLER holiday season.

I suppose it makes a LOT of sense, since all the previous games of the series each took place in many different countries.
So it's only natural that it'd change from being all around the world to being on only one spot...
red storm be damned! Lockdown on pc! arrrrgh!

So after Rainbow Six titles such as:
Broken Wing
Lockdown
Raven Shield
Urban Crisis
Rogue Spear
Critical Hour
Black Thorn
Iron Wrath

The best they could come up with was Vegas? Dissapointed probably isn't the best word to describe it, but it's definitely the first that comes to mind.

In lieu of Vegas, I'm suggesting they call this one Rainbow Six: Neon Holocaust, it just has a ring to it.

Umm. I think I'm the only one who's scared that if it's Vegas it'll either be a horrible fake ripoff of my beloved town.. or I'll be able to take paramilitary squads into the fully realisticly rendered breakroom at Circus Circus to hunt down things for the heck of it. Either one is kinda scary.

So are you the fucking swat team now rather than an elite international group of highly skilled counter-terrorists?

I'm upset with it being just in one city, but I've got to say, those graphics are impressive. I wonder what engine it's using?

Three Ubisoft reps were at a french morning show earlier today, "Salut Bonjour".
They showed the game for a few minutes and talked about their Quebec city offices and Montreal offices. I think the host asked the right questions, but they avoided the issues.. When asked why they had big teams in Quebec, one of the rep answered that talet is what kept them here. As far as I know, they're still getting huge tax breaks and sponsorship from both governments, explaining the sudden boom around here.

Interesting interview, but caffeine still hadn't run its magic on my brain, so I didn't catch much.

Every new version of this game seems to chase more and more fans of the series away, I don't see this one being any different. Hell, they should just stop using the name "Rainbow Six" altogether, these new games have nothing in common with the originals with the exception of a few character names.

I'm hoping they took all the criticism that they got with lockdown to heart, because Lockdown, while it was fun (but by no means great) if you didn't think of it as a Rainbow Six game. But since it IS a Rainbow Six game, it was a horrifying bastardization of one of my favourite series. I mean it wasn't even realistic. So I'm gonna go with cautiously optimistic on this one.

This posting says it all - now people talk of Rainbow Six as of a fps - a sure sign how badly this series has been distorted and looking at Lockdown on the pc I would believe that in Vegas, there is a loose/loose situation for every Rainbow Six gamer/lover.

We have to face it people - the strategy and planning are dead, long live the dumb users who love to blow up everyone that moves in their vicinity.

A sad day for semi-intelligent gaming, that is.

Playing Lockdown was like Vegas where the roulette table always comes up with the 0. Thanks UBI - you have lost me as a customer.

The devs behind RB3 and Blackarrow are behind this. We all know they didn't make Lockdown, which was one of the worst letdowns of this generation imo.

April issue of EGM? Ever since they busted me on Sonic and Tails being in Super Smash Bros, I've been pretty skeptical on anything in EGM's April issues. My guess is it's totally bogus.

Lockdown was horrible...

I think that it's not called "Vegas" because they're IN Vagas, but because of some other possible reasons ;)

A.) This is the perfect hand they are getting ready to deal... or...
B.) Some codename in the game refers to "Vegas" for something... or...
C.) The CEO of Ubisoft is an idiot.

Your logic baffles me. If you like the console "Rainbow Six" games (I use quotations because I consider none of the console iterations to be true games in the series), then you would probably like Lockdown.

You just can't expect much from FPS's on a console. That's all there is to it. I was hot for Lockdown, almost bought it the day it came out. God damn, I'm happy the store didn't have any copies. I want home downloaded and played the demo on my PC and instantly hated it. It was completely empty of fun. Even the FPS parts were bland as hell.

If you haven't played Raven Shield, you have to give it a try. It's old enough, it'll run on anything. I play Terrorist Hunt and Lone Wolf mainly. The mechanics of the FPS experience are what always brings me back. The sounds are terrific. You can tell how much you injured a bad guy by how he grunts. Sometimes they run away, sometimes they surrender. You never know. Doors can ge grenaded or detonated with a breaching charge. The level design is good and it really pays to think before you move. The little things like the varied weapons sounds and little puffs of blood when you hit someone and blood streaks on the walls really makes the experience worth it.

The AI isn't "smart" but, sometimes one of the T's will actually sneak up behind me and cap me.

I still play because in hardest mode, they still kill me more often then not. I feel satisfied when I finish a level. I'm looking for an updated version of that experience and so far, for years now I've been disappointed. Even HL2 didn't get the mechanics of death down like R6 did. "Fear's" pretty close.

Finally, something that looks next-gen.

Doesn't the Rainbow unit consist of four members...did one die or what.

mpsmith
03-04-2006, 07:29 PM
There were like 30 or so members of Rainbow Six. It's an international counter-terrorism group- four members? What are you thinking?

Technically, if we're going to go all nerdy on this one, the original composition consisted of two teams with a dozen or so shooters each along with three snipers and one almost futile psychoanalyst. Oh right, and the techie.

That's total bull shit; everyone I know who played first rainbow six game on Xbox and then played lockdown absolutely hated lockdown. As evidenced by the responses in this thread, Lockdown sucks regardless of platform. You act like everyone who plays a console lacks any form of standard.

You act like everyone who plays a console lacks any form of standard.

Not all who play on consoles deem Lockdown a travesty of the R6 series. But it's a fact that percentage is quite lower than the PC gamers. PC R6 fans almost in unison said Lockdown is a tripe, while on the console side it is severely muted. It's the reason why Lockdown still sold handsomely in the consoles, next game of R6 (not Vegas) for the last gen consoles is prepped quickly and an R6 for Xbox 360 is pre-titled "Vegas".

PC gamers definitely have higher standard and in this occassion, being elitist does mean something good.

First, I'd bet dollar bills to stones that the screenshot is either heavily doctored, or a cutscene.

Frankly, after Lockdown I've pretty much abandoned the franchise.

That said, the sole survivor or my hatred is Rogue Spear. Easily one of the best LAN games I've ever played.

I wouldn't be trolling if some people dropped the whole 'PC is superior vs Console is for people who prefer crappy games' thing. They can't even quit the 'Hey those screenshots look good and there's no way any console game looks that good' thing that always happens.

MasterKwan

I'm saying "PC is superior to console for FPS games" which is absolutely true. I play plenty of both, PC and console games. Some games are better on different platforms. To make an FPS playable on the console, you have to have:

1) Huge hitbox.

2) Small or low detail levels.

3) Mostly spray and pray weapons.

4) Limited animations for the characters.

5) Limited draw ranges

6) Low detail characters.

Some of these might not be true in next gen because, the 360 for example has 8 times the ram of the XBox but, it's true of this generation. "Condemed" on the 360 looks and plays like it was designed for the PC. Good sized levels, nice details and affects. Essentially it's the Fear engine on the 360.

Console ports to the PC are easy to ID simply from the play style. Even a good conversion can't hide the console roots. A console FPS ported to the PC is ALWAYS lacking compared to a dedicated PC version.

What more interesting is the people that care enough one way or the other for this discussion to annoy them.

It's not the graphics that defines a crappy R6 game. It's the gameplay.

And you'd think RTS is a genre? It's not. RTS is a subgenre, Strategy is a genre. PC might have smaller amount of genres to choose from (generally Shooters/Action, Strategy and Sim - that's 3 already :) ), but these are the genres that console gamers are always salivating. In retrospect, console gamers want the detail of Raven Shield, but PC gamers don't want R63 or even worst, Lockdown.

Stormwatcher
03-06-2006, 06:59 AM
The first 2 R6 games were butt ugly, but they were 1000000% (MIT verified) better than lockdown on either platform...

I hope the studio catches fire one night and they lose all code right before going gold. (no casualties, please.)

I really like both consoles and PCs, but consoleitis have damaged a few good pc games... namely Deus Ex 2. OTOH, Psychonauts was a great console-to-PC port, and so were the PoP games and the GTAIII series. Nevertheless, dedicated PC FPS games are just better... Half-Life 2 and UT2k4 are unbeatable on a half-decent PC.

Could you please provide a link the sales figures of R6 lockdown?

BTW I'm not entirely sure how being elitist is somehow a good thing in any case. When I refer to elitist, I am referring to the console bashing by PC gamers, not the standards by which current FPS's are measured. Certainly, video game standards are important, and nobody denies that PC gamers have higher standards in many areas, particularly those concerning FPS's.

IF, however, you are referring to the attitude often exhibited by PC gamers towards console players as a good thing, then I am a bit confused. Maybe it's because I don't have ass-loads of free time and money to burn (or an unhealthy lack of social interaction), but I really don't understand that particular phenomenon.
