Thanks to GamesIndustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz) for the news (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=15087).

Backbone Entertainment, part of North America's largest independent developer, Foundation 9, has announced the launch of its UMD authoring services for the PlayStation Portable.

Now an officially licensed Universal Media Disc (UMD) authoring service provider, Backbone is able to offer clients a wealth of creative, interactive menu designs for a wide selection of both original material and conversion of existing media on DVD standard.

Mike Mika, Backbone studio head, commented: "The PSP has so many different entertainment capabilities to offer. We're excited to continue to push the limits of the platform, not only in the games that we develop, but also in every other form of media available on the system."

The company has already lined up its first client for the new service, and will be creating two volumes of anime episodes based on Capcom's Darkstalkers franchise. The two 40 minute episodes: Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge Alpha and Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge Omega, both of which have been developed by Capcom, are scheduled for release on UMD later this month.

Anyone with half-a-brain seems to be ditching the UMD movie format.

These guys just made a bad business decision akin to opening a new buggy whip factory.

I wonder if Sony can cram a 3" blu ray drive into their new PSP.

Don't forget that its pirates that are killing UMD, not the fact that they are way overpriced and can only be played on one system.

How come pirates can kill the UMD but not DVD? Piracy kills everything!
To pay for a UMD that you can only watch on PSP & it ain't cheap. Brilliant. You goto love Sony proprietary format.

I fixed the press release:

"After we tried unsuccessfully to hype up our failed upstart franchise, Death Jr., and trying in vain to license it out as a comic book series and a cartoon, we're now turning our eyes towards yet another failed business venture: UMD authoring! Yes.

Please, if you're a dumb investor, consider dumping money in our company and never see it come back. Just like we did when we conned you last time!"

On another note, the name 'Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge Alpha/Omega' is dumb beyond words.

I used to work for BackBone, well back when it was just Imagine engine. I worked on Tonka Construction II and Barney and a few other things..... my friend used to say that working there was the beginning of his downward spiral, his wall of shame :). The owners seemed very buisness savy, they didn't really seem to know much about games but they could repeat things that they heard to clients so they sounded knowledgeable.

Why does everything get a press release these days?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Reanimated is pleased to announce that he took a poop this morning.

In conjunction with toilet tissue and a toilet bowl full of water, Reanimated successfully completed his morning bowel movement.

Reanimated commented: "It came out pretty good. You know sometimes you kinda feel like you might be on the toilet for a while, but this one was actually pretty smooth. I hope to replicate this in the future by eating plenty of fiber."

Reanimated has another poop scheduled for 6:45AM tomorrow morning.
