Cube.IGN (http://cube.ign.com/) has posted their hands-on preview of Rampage: Total Destruction (http://cube.ign.com/articles/692/692947p1.html) for your viewing pleaure. The preview includes screenshots and in-game videos as well. The title is being developed for the Gamecube as well as the PS2 with a slated ship date of April 2006 according to Midway's website. (http://www.midway.com/rxpage/Game_RampageTotalDestruction.html)

Here's a bit from the preview...

Additionally, you'll unlock a roster of dozens of monsters, all of whom have differing speed, power, and damage soaking capabilities. In addition to George, Lizzie and Ralph, you also get Godzilla-sized rats, werewolves, sea monsters, lions, demons, and others. As you progress through the single-player campaign, you'll also unlock a small movelist for each character. There's also a single-player timed mode, and you can battle out "King of the City" and "King of the World" with a buddy. You'll traipse through the now-familiar list of famous cities, and the addition of 3D allows you access to two different streets and two ranks of buildings.
Could be fun for a mere $19.99.

The screenshots look like Black&White pets gone bad..
There's a giant calamari. Count me in.
I just hope there's multi-player involved..

There is multi-player, and according to the latest Nintendo Power, the Gamecube version is the only version that can be played by 4 players simultaneously. The ps2 version is 2players only.

I enjoyed the two N64 Rampage outings quite a bit, so I'll definitely look into picking this up. The $20 pricetag only makes the decision that much easier.

Yeah, I too will be picking it up. I've loved Rampage since the original. Plus it'll be nice to have a new game. It seems like the ps2 and GCN are slowly dying... running out of things to play... :(

Anyone else feel like there's this huge, largely untapped potential market for lesser-known arcade remakes? Of course, Rampage has been redone to hell and back (with mostly positive results), but I would love to see some updated budget versions of some of my other old favorites. Quartet, anyone? (How awesome would 4-player co-op over Xbox Live be?) Or how about Gladiator?

I realize that we'll probably see a lot of these older, cheaply re-licensed games trickling into XBLA over the coming months and years as either straight ports or ports with minimally upgraded graphics, but I think a fully realized modern re-imagining of the games would be great. Sort of like the new Spy vs. Spy, only not so disappointing. :)

I'm sold. I'll be sure to pick up the GameCube version with 4-player support.

Thanks AlloyNES for poinging out 4-player mode for GameCube. That makes it a shoe-in.

You rock! I would add to these to that list...Raid Over Moscow, M.U.L.E., Into The Eagles' Nest, Autoduel, Times of Lore, Moebius, and Gateway/Temple to Apshai.

You know, it wouldn't be difficult to make great games based on these classics. They would be a perfect fit for Live Arcade or Nintendo's download service. No need to make them super-fancy either.

I couldn't agree more! All of those were some of my favorite C64 games. I would add to the list a few others, though:

Jumpman (would make an absolutely awesome modern remake)
Lode Runner
Zoom!
World Karate Championship
Tower Toppler
Law of the West (I -still- play this game on an emulator, and all my nieces & nephews love it as well)

And, of course, there's countless others. And you'd think that since the gal that made the C64 all-in-one game joystick was able to license alot of these titles, MS should be able to similiarly do so.

Oh wow...I forgot about Law of the West. Accolade made some great games, I loved Hardball as well.

Very good list of titles-that-should-be-remade so far. I would add H.E.R.O., High Noon, and Dino Eggs to it. :)

Also, I think someone in these forums pointed me to Freedroid (http://sourceforge.net/projects/freedroid/) which is a *damn* good Paradroid remake. (actually two remakes, a same-as-the-original one, with some nice enhancements, and a full RPG.) ..Um, I never saw Mail Order Monsters, I understand this is something a bit different to it (more like Epyx's Movie Monsters game) but I'd recommend a look at They Came from Hollywood (http://www.theycamefromhollywood.com/) which looks promising (if they hurry up and finish it), but is also just a damn good laugh of a site. More people with this kind of sense of humour should be programming games.
