View Full Version : Oblivion GOLD - Due in stores March 20th

It's official, March 20th will show gamers what it's like to play as a powerful mage and steal bread from townsfolk! Grab your Deadric armor and prepare for battle!
Here you go, what you've all been waiting to hear and have suspected for a while now. Expect the game in stores in the US as early as the 21st. The date in Europe may be a few days after, but it should be that week pretty much everywhere. As always, please check with your local retail store as the retailers themselves decide how fast to ship it to their outlets. I can't tell you when it will be in your specific city/country, so please don't ask.

Oh good. Since I don't own a 360, and I doubt my PC can run Oblivion too well.. I'm not in too big of a rush for this one to hit shelves.
But now that it's done, can they now at least acknowledge that they own the rights to the Fallout franchise, please? ;) I want to see a new game in the series, but I don't care for the Elder Scrolls style gameplay too much. I'm hoping they don't go that route with Fallout.

WOOT! GOLD BABY GOLD!
I'm right there with you Chum, in order to get in the Elder Scrolls mood I thought I should finally play Morrowind through to the end. I must have ADD when it comes to Morrowind, a half dozen times I would play the game and not get much further than half way through and get distracted by some other game. I love the game, but I tend to burn out on it because I always was doing every quest I ran across, join all the guilds, etc.
But last month I installed and have been playing through the game again, but this time I vowed to stick to only the main quest. I think I'm about 2/3 of the way through the main quest, definately farther than I have gotten before. Only guild I have joined is the Fighters guild, and only did the first couple of quests from them.
Hopefully I'll be done by the time the 20th rolls around :)

I'll be doing the same really, especially considering that I have to wait to get a system that can play the game. However, I would not put a lot of stock in what that guy says. As a matter of fact, all of the other previews have been at least decent, his being the only one that negative.

Personally I am worried about the 360 version after reading Tycho's link in yesterdays post I hope it wasn't as bad as all that. I think I will be snagging the PC version as it may chug along at first but patches and upgrades willing will be flowing with long draw distances with time.

I can't wait for the day when we see Fallout 3. I don't mind if they use the Oblivion style gameplay i.e. venturing through the wastelands in 3D, but I just hope the combat system remains turn-based. Man, Fallout 1 & 2 are simply the greatest RPG games ever made...

I somehow believe the half dozen other sites who said the game was amazing. I'm sure they'll be framerate issues in places. A few reviewers did mention that the graphics in your character's immediate area were awesome but in the distance low res textures were used. That doesn't bother me so much.

Morrowind ran like shit when I bought it, small view distance and muddy textures a-go-go.
Somehow, despite the general ugliness and overall clankiness (made up a word!) of the engine, I managed to just about shit myself having fun. I think I probably sunk about 200 hours easily into Morrowind. Poor me.

what I don't get about ship dates and actual release dates is that why, if the ship date is the day it's supposed to be available, can we not get it until the next day? Most stores will get a game in by the end of the day on the "release" day but they claim that they'll be breaking street date if they don't sell it until the next day. Who determines this?

Oblivion does have third person already built in, you just push the right thumbstick on the 360 version and I think the R key on the PC version.

Wow, I can't believe this finally went gold! WOOHOO!!
Sadly I have no means of playing it, but I'm strongly considering and new PC for this and Gothic 3 alone.
I only hope that this game combines Morrowinds expansive world and character options with Gothic 2's polish and superior NPC AI. That would truly deliver the game of my dreams!
Count me in the group of those who played Morrowind a lot but never finished it. Hell I barely scratched the main quest. I have a few friends who played it all the way through and never saw half of the things I would tell them about. I really need to get that game out again and try out the mods more...

I loved Daggerfall, though I didn't get very far into it. However, it was what made me want to get Morrowind. I don't think I played Morrowind much at all after I initially got it - just couldn't get into it enough and I felt a little lost with there being so many things to do and no clear direction. But lo and behold, a year or two later, I powered my way through the thing doing almost every side quest I could, and I never even really got to touch the expansions.
So I'm imagining Oblivion will be like that, again. A slow to involve, difficult to master but very engaging and thoroughly enjoyable PC game for the long term, like the last two have been.
I'm a day 1 purchase. I know it's not going to be perfect, there is going to be bugs (it is a bethseda game after all...) but I also know I'm going to enjoy the absolute fuck out of it.

Very glad to hear this. I think I'm still traumatized from HL2, such that if a dev team demures on giving a firm release date in the last few months of development, I mentally put it in the "vaporware" file, just to be on the safe side. Getting to haul Oblivion out of that file is a very pleasant thing.
Any wagers on how it'll look on a 9800pro and P4 3.0c?

I am speechless. I am without speech!
Side Note: Are people REALLY going to hate the game if you have a short load time everytime you enter an interior door? Did it REALLY take away from the original Morrowind? I mean, sure, who wouldn't want a completely seemless world? If every developer could create their games that way, believe me, I'm sure they would. Anyone remember a little game called Half-Life 2? Even on a sick gaming rig, some load times took 20-25 seconds. Yet, it still won the most Game of the Year awards that year. Strange...
Yes, yes you are.
I should have mentioned reasonable load times, if the game takes 2 minutes to load and then 15 or so seconds to load a mission like gta it doesn't really bother me.
Half-Life 2 load times were pretty bad, but Valve pretty much fixed that.
But seriously, with the amount of data(textures, models, ai, etc) games have these days, you should expect initial loading times to be a far bit longer then they used to. It all mostly depends on your processor speed, amount of memory and hard disk speed(rpm)... if it takes you a minute just to copy a 250mb file in windows, you can't expect a game to load that same exact amount of information in a shorter time. HardDrive speeds haven't increased much in the recent years, going from 7200rpm to 10,000(raptor)...
I wonder what kind of load times spore will have, since most of the game is supposedly procedural(future tech)...

So let me understand this correctly, they can patch the game on the 360? I've already pre-ordered this for the PC but as I now have an HDTV at 1080i, I think I'd prefer the Xbox version but only if they can patch as well as the PC.

My guess is: respectable. Far from the low end, but far from the high end enough to make you want a new GPU with 16 pipelines and PS3 support :)
Edit: Depending on your RAM, you are at the "recommended" system requirements (read: minimum requirements for an enjoyable experience) and just under for the GPU. I think you'll be just fine.
I need to see a benchmark... I'm hoping a Athlon 3400 and Ati x1900xtx runs it good. I don't have more money to upgrade the CPU.

I must persevere with Morrowind. I really love western CRPGs, but never got into Morrowind. I find it abismally ugly. The characters are all hideous, the textures suck... And my char moves at half-snail-pace. Also, it throws way too much shit on you during character creation... One needs to read thousands of lines of text just t have some idea of what each thing do. But I'll try again... Any tips/hints for a Morrowind newb get started? an easier race/class combo to begin with?

Visit some mod sites. You can get some way better character models, which actually have a lower poly count than the original fugly ones. Very worth it.
I'm hoping that Oblivion PC ships with the same rich tools as Morrowind, as that made it one of the most pleasant games to casually mod. A while back I played as a mage and made myself a constant mana regen ring, so that I could get away with being something other than a ghost-stabbing Atronach. Made it a lot of fun. The flexibility to do stuff like that, or say disable all Cliff Runners, really adds a lot to the series.

Then again, i've been known to be wrong...
And that review's not really that negative. He just didn't like the load times, and the low rez distance textures. For me, that'd be a deal breaker...i hate anything that breaks immersion, and both of those things do. He says there's a bunch of stuff he likes about it (the character creation engine, the size of the world) and some stuff that he doesn't like. As someone said, that's only being seen as "negative" because all previews typically are a dicksucking contest to see who can get preview copies of the next game that company releases.

Anyway, what, in your mind, are going to be the things that really kill it for people? Is there some big design flaw that you've noticed?
Personally, i'm really big on immersion...so it's going to be make it or break it on the lag issues. I've got a fairly decent computer, but if i'm dropping the graphics until they look like crap just to get a decent framerate, that's going to piss me off. Also, nothing pisses me off more than that 1.5 second "lag" on a game that i'm playing single player. I've had too many time where mid combat, i've had some file load and get me screwed or killed or whatever.
Admittedly, i'm biased because this is not my type of game. However, i think that given the level of hype this game has recieved, they better deliever an amazing product just to live up to expectations.
The half-life 2 effect all over again...the major hype for that could have killed it, if valve had done anything but make an excellent game.
I think people will be disappointed because they expect things that are totally unreasonable of the game, or expect this to be the defining game of this genre, and this game simply might not be that good.
Hype is a very, very dangerous thing.

And I will. Problem is, if I end up giving it a good review, it'll be labelled above and not taken seriously. So do I give it a bad review? If I do that I'd be labeled a "hit monger."
Only thing to do is to give it an honest review, just like everything else I've reviewed here.
No kidding, I'm getting really tired of the accusations of bias on this stuff.
If someone liked Morrowind, and they later give a positive review to a game which is similar in concept to Morrowind, but better, that is not bias. That's human consistency.
The big question is, would someone like bap review Oblivion well if it came from a company other than Bethesdasoft? I really, really doubt that many "fanboys" would be pissing on Oblivion if it came from Bioware/EA/whomever, and merely lap it up because of BSoft's logo or the TES franchise.
Why is it that nowadays everyone assumes that the people with whom they disagree are unquestioning hosts to irrational and prejudicial opinions, even on matters as superficial as video games?

A quick tour of history will show that humans, a good deal of them at least, have always behaved this way. Art, music, politics, religion, pretty much anything one can have an opinion on is subject to this kind of attack. Whether it's on a dirty alleyway of a web forum or a real world war zone, it's the same close-minded stuff.

Anyway...
Correction on the news post title: March 20th is the shipping date, not the street date. It should be in stores a day or two afterward.

WHAT IS THE RELEASE DATE?
The game will be available in stores in North America and Europe the week of March 20th. Check with your local retail store to find out when they will receive their copies.

As long as this game runs well on my PC, which it certainly should, I should be able to hold off an a 360 at least until Gears of War which is now looking like July or August. Sweet. Stupid shiny 360, making me want to buy it so bad. I've only recently reignited my love for the PC with WoW, BF2, DoD: Source and Warhammer: DoW which have kept me away from consoles for the most part for almost a year now. My heart will always lie with the PC. Or maybe that hottie Kefkataran.
just can't wait. Its a real pity that i didn't complete Morrowind, after putting cheats on it totally ruined the game.
