As sure as night follows day, news (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=15031) from GamesIndustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz) that Electronic Arts have secured the exclusive rights to publish games based on the 2006 World Cup should come as no real surprise.
Electronic Arts has secured the rights to produce a tie-in for this year's FIFA World Cup event in Germany, with games for current and next-generation platforms slated for a release this April.
2006 FIFA World Cup will feature nearly 100 of the world's favourite footballers, all specially animated to capture their playing styles. Players will be able to choose from 127 national teams, and play in matches in the 12 official stadiums where the tournament is being held as well as stadiums from each qualifying region.
..........
“The FIFA World Cup will be the single most watched sporting event by a worldwide television audience, bringing together football fans from around the world,” said producer Joe Nickolls.
“Our game, 2006 FIFA World Cup, celebrates this passion by capturing all of the national rivalries in-game, enabling fans to play their heroes and be a part of 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.”
You can keep your World Series and your Superbowl - the World Cup is where it's at.

Ya know, the FIFA: Road to the World Cup game is just that, the road to the world cup. You don't actually play in it. I made it to the cup, it told me the teams that qualified and then it was game over. I couldn't fucking believe it.

Meh. They own the FIFA license to make games, of course this was coming. No if Konami got the rights, I would be very excited because Winning Eleven is fantastic. FIFA Soccer? Not so much.
HardScores: Can't say that I agree. WE/PES is way overhyped imho. I enjoyed the latest FIFA more than any WE/PES ever. That said, none of the newer games can even be compared to the pure genius that is FIFA 98 RTWC.
Now, while I enjoyed FIFA 2006, I don't think the world needs a "FIFA 2006: The World Cup" or something, which plays almost exactly like the last FIFA, only with minor gameplay tweaks and a focus on the world cup.
Suprisingly, EA is milking their cash cow once again...

Okay... so there are 32 teams, each with about 20 players on the roster. The game has less than 100 of them? Is this PR being stupid or another sign of EA's cash milking laziness?

Hooray for Quidditch! :p

The latter, I'd say. "[...]nearly 100 of the world's favourite footballers, all specially animated to capture their playing styles[...]" doesn't sound too bad as long as you don't compare it to the actual number of players @ the world cup. I guess that's what they are counting on.
PES is not overhyped, it is just so much better and closer to actual soccer. FIFA plays like fucking pinball with the ball clonking along from player to player. You could say PES is the Gran Turismo of Soccer games, but that wouldn't quite capture it, since it's a hell lot of fun even from the start and the series has been getting more and more arcade'y. FIFA on the other hand might be the prettier game, but it's also far blander and predictable than Konami's effort.
Let me put it this way, while FIFA may be fun for some, you still get the feel that you're playing a videogame and use those tested and tried methods of exploiting the AI you've been using since DOOM. PES however might be more difficult to grasp, but to beat it you're required to employ real soccer strategies.
FIFA is Britney Spears, good looks but shallow.
PES is deep, rich, cute, tasteful and much more real than that, just like the girl I met on monday night. Contrary to her, PES has got no boyfriend so hooray for gamerhood :).
(P.S.: damn I need to get to know that girl better!)

No. You've not been playing the same game I have. Or at least not with the same AI. Or maybe you just have a really interesting way of playing Doom... :p
I get the feeling of "just playing a game" much more with PES. It just lacks atmosphere imho.

I dunno. I hear that one a lot, but if I play PES the same way I play FIFA, using the very same tactics, I am quite successful against the AI. The biggest difference there are the sucky controls on teh PC.

This is what I mean by overhyped. PES isn't incredibly deep or something. It isn't Baldurs Gate 2.
And where, in gods name, do you get the idea that a soccer game should be cute?

Well, good luck then... let me know how it goes :p
I guess in the end it all comes down to personal taste anyway. We're above those vs. fanboy flamewars. I'm tired too, but I'm being noble and mature, not lazy ;).

Another mediocre game from EA. I can't wait!
The fact that most people I know would rather play NHL '95 than 2005 says something about the route EA is travelling.
