To celebrate the forthcoming 3rd adventure of the nameless hero and friends, developer Pirahna Bytes plans to re-release Gothic 1 for the international audience (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9615).
That's you http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif *points at all of you*
So to celebrate the re-release of Gothic 1, they've gone and made a new international English demo.
It's available right here (http://www.piranha-bytes.com/gothic1/index.php?lang=eng) (250 mb) right now. Here's some help (http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic/) in case things get ugly.

This is great! The first time I played the Gothic 1 demo was in 2001 :P It took me completely by surprise and I have been a devout Gothic fan ever since. Only a few games have made such an emotional impact on me like the big G's have.
By the way, there's a "Ask the developers" Gothic 3 Q&A thread going on in the JoWood forums (http://forum.jowood.de/showthread.php?t=115197)
...and here's my recap of the whole thing in a more easily readable form: http://personal.inet.fi/atk/kjh2348fs/gothic3_ask_the_devs.html
I'll keep updating that page until all the questions have been answered.

No mouse support. Controls are not intuitive and there is not a tutorial.
The story looks great, I watched the intro and had the conversation with Diego, but once I got out on my own, fighting the UI got too painful.
This was really made in 2001? Without mouse support?
Also, it looks like you attack in real time like in Elder Scrolls. . . I wonder how they'll do that with such crummy controls.
Anyway, I'd suggest avoiding this altogether unless you want to see a demo that has a cool intro and then horrific controls that remind me of games I played back in elementary school.

If you can't use the controls in Gothic, you're a goddamn retard.

Your location is apt, because you sir, are a dick.

What? Gothic supports mouse. I haven't had no difficulties with the controls.
If you can't spend a some time to learn how to control a game then you're missing out a great experience.

Oh, I'm a dick because god forbid I should insult on an internet forum! I'm such a horrible person oh noes.
Gothic I is good, but nowhere as near as good as Gothic II, which is one of my favorite games of all time. G1 is fun maybe for 1/3 of the game, when you're first thrown into the Barrier and you get to do a lot of exploring and you first see the NPCs walking around, talking, great experience. Once you join a camp, though, it becomes painfully dull and linear, a very straightforward dungeon crawl complete with lever pulling teh ultimate evil!!! last boss.

No, you're being called a dick because you are jumping on someone's case for saying they had trouble with the controls. IIRC this is the most prevailant complaint about the two games so far, and I totally understand the fact that some people don't have the patience, desire, or both to dick with the learning curve. I personally stuck it out and love both games. Apparently bean19 doesn't want to dick with it, so what, that doesn't make him a 'goddamn retard'.

Yes, it does. The learning curve takes maybe 1 to 3 minutes, sorry if it isn't super-duper dumbed down so you can use your Xbox controller and masturbate while playing it. If you don't want to take the time to learn how to play a game, then why even play games at all ffs

Golly Nichols why are you here? This is EA not the ign forums. And stupid baseless attacks on people are not only frowned upon but are met with outright hostility. So cut the crap or stop posting, your not doing anyone any favors.

Baseless? I don't think they're baseless at all, you silly goose.

All in all, the game is a blast to play - once you figure out the controls. The combat is not point and click, you have to manuever and figure out what type of sword swing you will use and what combinations of moves you do (which will then cause a special attack).
The key thing to remember when attacking is to hold the control key down and then press the arrow keys for which way you want to attack. A simple combination is CTR L R L or CTR R L R - which will, when you gain some experience in weapons a special attack. The up arrow will provide an over head attack while down arrow moves you back.
Also, you are not an all powerful hero yet - you have no weapon skills since you have no training.

I think the problem is that the demo didn't recognize my mouse or something. I remapped the controls to work for my WASD set up, and fooled with it for some time, but without mouse-look and being able to click attack as Jetherik mentioned, it is really rough to play. . . you try moving with WASD and then using the right-hadn on the arrows to do action/attack etc. It felt really sloppy and not fun.
I wonder why it didn't see my mouse. . . I tried to map my mouse in the config too.
Oh well. I guess I'll just play with my <insert retard stereotype here> instead.

Gothic 1 has mouse support. Don't know about the demo because I've never played it. I've played both 1 and 2 all the way through a couple times each. Probably my favorite rpg ever.
Anyway, don't let a default control scheme deter you from playing one of the best rpg's ever. And above all, don't listen to the naysayers because you're really going to miss out on a couple great games (I found both games way more enjoyable than the over-hyped Morrowind).
Personally, I found the default control scheme as the better choice. Your hands don't leave their positions at all. All you need is the Ctrl key (left pinky), z (left middle finger), x (left hand first finger), spacebar (left hand thumb), and the arrow keys (right hand). That's it. You'll be surprised how easy it is to control the game like that. There's literally no need for the mouse in the game. Give it a try.

I consider myself a pretty entrenched online and with videogames in general, but the only time i've ever heard of Gothic, is on Evil Avatar, when it crops up int he news every 2 months.

I just started playing it. The real issue with it. Is that it's control scheme is just such a drastic departure for me from any other RPG I have played on the PC. Once I got used to things and actually found out how to pick something up, it was better. However the combat itself seems rather boring and I dunno if I could stick with it threw an entire game.

That's one of the injustices of this world..a truly great game like gothic is not known by very many people while that lifeless shallow piece of crap called morrowind (you can't deny it had nothing praise worthy except for its expansive world) gets all the hype

I suggest (shameless plug) you head over to RPGDot.com - since there you'll find the largest and most active Gothic fan community outside the german speaking world (I am allowed to say that without getting slapped, since I have retired from RPGDot *g*).

I consider myself and everyone I have ever met outside of EvAv as being under the same rock. As I have not heard of it untill I saw a Gothic 2 box in a game shop about a month ago.
No one has uttered a word about it to me.

It is one of the great unknown games in the US. With the new publisher, they are trying to change that. Which is great for us here in the states because it means we won't have to wait a year for Gothic 3!

Athought it ain't that popular it isn't as bad as you make it out to be either..ask around in other popular gaming forums too and I'm sure you'll find plenty more people who loved the game

This is the singular gaming forum I have ever stayed in. Every other one ive gone too...is well... populated by people not fit to eat my excriment.
Besides, any other gaming forum. You start a thread asking about a game and you will have 50 pages of...

I have trouble sticking with one game and I tend to jump around. Gothic I and II are just a few of the games I have ever completed. I played the German demo of the first one and really enjoyed it. The controls were frustrating but I got the hang of it. The marketing for Gothic games in the US has never been good and the team takes forever to translate the game to English. However, each game has been worth the wait.
