The official Battlefield Bad Company 2 Blog has been updated (http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2009/11/25/the-pc-beta-sky-is-falling-not.aspx##) with word that the PC beta test of BF:BC2 has been delayed until sometime in 2010.
We wanted to update you, and slow the flood of tweets, on questions surrounding the BFBC2 PC Beta being cancelled. I'll get right to it and say "the BFBC2 PC Beta is not cancelled". Now this all started due to changes made to an earlier blog that removed the PC Beta from the details and the reason for this was the plan changed. With the huge success of the PS3 Beta we decided to drastically increase the PC Beta's capacity to insure as many people as possible could participate. Unfortunately this meant we had to delay the Beta to very early next year giving us more planning time to make it happen and implement more optimizations.
Here is a recap of the current PC features, and we can now confirm DX11 support with more details to come later!
Read between the lines in the blog post. There are NO dedicated servers for the PC. You can only 'rent' a dedicated server.
How does this say there are no dedicated servers for PC? Renting a server is generally what one does with a dedicated server, it's not like you buy one outright.

Beta delayed? Bad company, bad, bad company. Sit, company, sit! Good company. Now, go fetch beta! Go boy!

There ARE dedicated servers. They just found a way to ensure they get a slice of the pie when people rent them. It's also possible that controlling the providers for the servers will help cut down on cheats and piracy.
Of course there are downsides to setting it up like this - but it's still a better solution (lag-wise) than P2P hosting.

Hey hey, let's not jump to conclusions here. Yes, maybe they're movin' on from dedicated servers to run with the pack of folks like Infinity Ward, but maybe this could be the one Bad Company that does everything I need regardless of dedicated servers being gone, gone, gone. If you needed somebody to play the "accusations without evidence" game, that isn't me, I say no smoke without a fire and I see no smoke-- yet.
I can't get enough of that all-out destruction though, so maybe BC2 will at worst be good lovin' gone bad. I won't walk through fire for it though, but this could be the one game that steals my time from MW2. If EA/DICE want to shake it up and jeopardize their fame and fortune, then so be it.

DICE has made it a point to let everyone know there will be dedicated servers from their web page announcements, twitter and even the letter they posted from a fan.

I think we need to start demanding DirectX support at least 5 incarnations in advance. I want my games released this year to have DirectX 16 support! That way they still look great 5 years from now ;D
The way that I read it, is that RANKED dedicated servers have to be rented. Which makes sense to me. I'm sure that unranked dedicated servers can do whatever the hell they please.

Yeah... I don't know anything about the subject actually, I'd be buying on 360 if I get it at all, I just wanted to make a post using as many Bad Company album titles as possible. But if what you say is true, and it probably is, PC fans rejoice.

I'll be right there with you when buying it for the 360. :D

Sorry to sort-of side track the thread, but I haven't really been following BBC2 that closely and I was wondering, will it have the humor aspect that the first one had, or has it gone all serious?

Anyone answer on this? I never played part 1, so I'm anxiously awaiting this title. As long as the gameplay is serious, I don't care if the characters crack jokes and all.

What's up with all our favorite pc developers screwing us on dedicated servers lately? I really hope this doesn't become a trend, dedicated servers are a core aspect of the pc gaming community, where were you when they came for the dedicated server?

I played a lot of one and it was very serious when you did multiplayer and from the looks of the videos I've watched that seems to be back and with a vengeance. You could ask modeps how it feels as he has the PS3 beta.

I have the PS3 beta! I loved the game. I had to pull myself away from it or I would never get anything done. It is a lot like the multiplayer in CoD:MW, with a few less unlockable, but with tons more vehicles.
It is 'serious' in that it is straight multiplayer combat. How are they going to fit in humor if there is no story and no dialogue?

Every time I see the dedicated server question answered by the developers, it is the same answer you see above... "Yes, it has dedicated servers you can rent." It even goes on to talk about clan servers and again it says you can 'rent' a private server. It doesn't say anything about running your own server.
I'm not seeing anything anywhere that says that you can run your own private/unranked server. I think this would be a great question to run past the developers. I'll run it past my EA contact and see what they say.

As has already been pointed out by several uses in this thread:
(1) there are still dedicated servers, the fact that they need to be rented from EA approved partners is irrelevant. As long as dedicated servers are available instead of shitty P2P then PC users will be happy;
(2) you can be guaranteed that all the major isp's will have plenty of dedicated servers available to the public free of charge;
(3) these are the exact same arrangements which EA had in place for BF2 and BF2142, and that in no way impacted upon user accessibility to dedicated servers;
(4) in all likelihood users will still be able to set up their own dedicated servers, however they will not be ranked, just like with BF2 and BF2142.
The OP's comment is obviously designed to be sensationalistic for the sake of provoking outrage, but in reality this is nothing new. Suggesting that there are no dedicated servers simply because EA regulates the use of "ranked" dedicated servers is asinine. :rolleyes:
