While last week's Merrill Lynch report about Sony possibly delaying the PlayStation 3's US launch until next year set off a few panic attacks (especially in the mainstream media), this week's Game Over column on CNN (http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/23/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/) downplays its significance - noting some of the logical reasons Sony won't postpone. The column also spoke with Sony's partners and competitors to get their thoughts - virtually all of whom said a push to 2007 would never happen.

The PS3 launch is still going to be a nightmare.

It might as well be delayed into 2007, since most people won't even be able to get their hands on one until then.

Man, I can't wait for 12 months from now when all the next gen consoles are out, easily available and we'll know exactly where they all stand. The anticipation is killing me!

I'm in no panic. Let them release it when they are ready. Get some good games together Sony :)

Bit late for that... (http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html)

I could never get past the Babelfish puzzle.

It's three months later, the 360 still isn't shipping enough units (and isn't expected to be for another month), and Sony's managed to keep the PS3 in the news almost constantly, thanks to sites like this. The console industry is a perfect example of "there's no such thing as bad publicity", and Sony's playing it perfectly. I'm not saying the 360 is another Dreamcast, but every day they're not stocking tons of product on shelves cuts down on the time advantage it had on the PS3. Even worse, they've got Nintendo on their ass too, with a low-cost gamer-friendly solution that doesn't promise to be the end to all the black cubes in your living room. On top of that, they've got horrible sales in Japan, where both their competitors are from and sell gazillions of units no matter how crappy, and they're throwing money into developing an HD DVD addon to half-heartedly combat Blu-Ray when they haven't been able to meet production on the current console.

Will Microsoft make their target for mid-year 360 sales? Probably, but minus a polished, good Halo 3 or any other killer app, the holidays look pretty bleak.

Yeah the holidays are going to suck. The 360 will have lots of 2nd gen games, the Revolution will be out, and the PS3 will be released in Japan and maybe the US. I can see how that would seem pretty bleak ;)

Bleak for Microsoft. Their lineup of 2nd-gen games doesn't exactly light the room on fire.

That's news to me, since I can go right down the street and buy one. Are some of you guys still having problems finding these? They have them in the Boston area at Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. I see them available all over the place.

As a software developer, it SUCKS when a product is forced to be released for "business reasons" at a set date. And suddenly, bugs and testing and complete features become political rather than engineering problems.

If they haven't got the thing working properly yet, give them a bit more time. Don't release an embaressing disaster.

And the rushed-ass 360 launch was so perfect. Oh listen to yourself for once, for the love of god!!
