Gamecloud (http://www.gamecloud.com) has posted a preview (http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=3600) of the upcoming first-person Western-themed game, Call of Juarez.

While not a prolific as WWII games, the Western genre has generated a number of video and PC games as of late from Desperados (and its upcoming sequel) to Dead Man’s Hand to Red Dead Revolver to Darkwatch and most recently Gun. Now Poland based developer Techland enters this genre with Call of Juarez, a first person Western shooter that’s due out later this year. Gamecloud recently got a chance to play with a two level press build of the game.

The first level in the tech demo starts in a church with your character, the preacher named Ray McCall, inside reading a Bible. It’s certainly not the way most action games start. Our character quickly straps on a pair of revolvers and heads outside only to be greeted by the local sheriff and a not so happy mob of armed cowboy miners. Apparently there is some kind of conflict with a person named Billy (our press build never really got into much detail) and before long the sheriff is shot in the head by one of the armed mob. It’s up to you to clean the town out of these bushwackers. Much like Gun, Call of Juarez has a slow motion mode (they call it concentration) that allows you to shoot a couple of enemies without much resistance for brief periods of time. One interesting thing about the game is that the Bible reading actually is a gameplay feature. You can pull out the Holy Scripture and start reading to momentarily stun your enemies.

..........

Again, this two level tech demo was too short and didn’t offer enough gameplay to really evaluate how Call of Juarez will finally turn out, but it already looks good and if Techland can refine the gameplay and make it a memorable experience this Western could become a sleeper hit. We hope to get a better chance to preview the game before its release later in 2006.
This could be right up your alley, Evil! All it needs is zombies.

wtf? That sounds like a feature being cut ( I hope).
What a stupid idea to get stunned mid-battle by a bible reading.
I actually liked the screens and the idea to make a western - but it should be gritty and somewhat realistic for my taste.

Funny you should say that. Were you aware that my first western novel has zombies?

Ah I can't get excited about games set in the wild west. It's just a bit boring...better for films.

Brokeback Mountain has spoiled cowboy movies now though. So utterly crap.

Call of Juarez is what high schoolers in El Paso, Texas hear that drives them over the border to do some underage drinking!

I seem to remember you posting something about that, but I may just be making that up to cover for my freakishly accurate predictions. :)

Oooooooooooooooo! Slow motion gameplay! That sounds incredible! I have to own this. No question. Such innovation is unsurpassed in all of gamedomness. Absolute, amazing insight. I don't know if I can sleep tonight. My heart, oh my heart, how you tremble in longing and anticipation!

Another f*ing shooter where you slow down time? Why not expand this great idea to all games? Sony did with the PS2 and it worked great. Only they called it "loading time."

Dumbest idea, evar. It's not a western, it's a movie with some gay ranch hands as the main characters. No guns, no western.

But, regarding the game...

...and if Techland can refine the gameplay and make it a memorable experience this Western could become...

So... its crap?

I certainly didn't think it was crap at all. My preview is over here, at WorthPlaying (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=32086").

Hey Juarez, don't call me.

-edit Hmmm, so it's techland. Their Chrome localization was terrible, Juarez (don't call me!) at least looks half decent.

I found this is to be considerably better than the Chrome title I played, SpecForce. There's a wide variety of play mechanics, not so one-dimensional as Chrome.

I think stun, was the wrong words to use, remember you are a reverend, so you quoting things from the bible while shooting will confuse(thats a better word) your armed enemies and scare townspeople.

BTW, I am new and this is my first post ;). So please don't tell me I'm wrong.

BTW Zombosis, since you have played it, what do you think of the graphics, and do you think on a non alpha version(you played the Alpha version), you could turn them up higher? Some of them look real beautiful on Worthplaying.
